Audrey is the most one of the most kind hearted people I know. She is positive and has a contagious smile. She has a great, judgment free listening ear. When seeking advice she has always been spot on no matter the situation. Having her in my life has been a blessing I didn’t know I needed. I believe everyone needs an Audrey in their life–if you pick her, you won’t be let down. She is attentive because she is way more caring than the average person. Thank you Audrey for being a beautiful human!

Audrey Goddard is truly an amazing person. Having known her for 4 years, I can attest to the type of person she has become. She is driven, caring, non-judgmental, and very outgoing. She will connect with you in the smallest of ways, and then you will be opening up like you’ve known her all your life. She takes the time to go above and beyond to meet your needs. To say she is the best is an understatement.

I’ve been going to this office since August ’24 and came here during a very difficult time in my life. I was met was compassion, care, and understanding of what my medical needs. No one made me feel less than which hasn’t always been the case when dealing with mental health providers. Kimberly is one of the best Mental health nurse practitioner I’ve dealt with. She is easy to talk to and I felt I was included in the decisions about the changes made. Again, some medical providers just say here take this. Working with Tish in therapy has been life changing and I cannot recommend her enough. She has helped me gain skills and perspective to move me forward in my life long struggle with mental health. With the help of Kim and Tish my mental health has never been better.

I would highly recommend LifeStance! They were able to begin a working patient and provider relationship almost immediately! My wait was only a couple weeks before I was seen. My provider has been excellent! She is very receptive, understanding, informative, professional and most of all kind. To anybody seeking mental health help, this is the place to go.

I have only seen one therapist, Kimberly Grider, but I can say my time with her has been a very pleasant experience. She not only applies her knowledge to a treatment plan, but she is very receptive to ideas that the patient has for the treatment plan which in my experience has been very rare for a provider to do. I’m sure the other staff members are just as adequate, but I would recommend Kimberly to anyone looking for psychiatric needs.

Charged $142 to spend an hour re-answering all the Patient Profile questions I had filled out on the website the day before. At the end of my session, was told that I could not be treated because of an item on my medical history that a.) my non-prescribing therapist and family doctor don’t have issues with, and b.) was disclosed on the pre-appointment Patient Questionnaire.

I’ve had nothing but the best experience with Lifestance. I am beyond impressed with the progress I’ve made myself… however, it comes with help on navigating and tools to manage stressors in life from the staff here.
Highly recommend to anyone who needs a kind soul to hear you out and support you throughout the journey.
-side note I’ve never left a session with my therapist feeling unsettled or anxious, I’m always leaving on a positive and pleasant level. I never feel rushed to get my thoughts out there.

Dr Kimberly Grider has been fantastic. I’ve been evaluated by countless doctors and psychiatrists over the past several years in order to diagnose what turned out to be ADHD. I can tell she has a lot of experience evaluating and treating patients, as she has been able to sort out my symptoms, properly diagnose, and prescribe an effective treatment that has made a huge positive impact on my ability to function properly in a relatively short period of time. Definitely recommend!

Ive never left a review for a therapist.
I’ve been utilizing therapy for 30 years, and on a quest for the perfect fit. I thought I found that at BraveLife Therapy with Courtney Harrough. We did months worth of work together; however, as time went on she became harsh, promised to try various forms of therapy with me with ZERO follow through, switched practices, increased her price from $60 per session to $140, and then changed her schedule with ZERO warning. None of these changes were told to me in person – I had to find out via email. After expressing concern for her inconsistency as a therapist, tactfully and respectfully, I was let go by CP, had my file handed off, and it was all clearly retaliatory. She is a DANGER to clients who are experiencing distress, abandonment, trust issues, and great turmoil. Horribly inconsistent and lacking in empathy. She made many promises that she never backed up, and the lack of follow through was entirely unacceptable.
I cannot express how disappointed I am in her as a human being, as well as her supervisor Pat. When I reached out to file a complaint she was condescending and unhelpful. Offered zero solutions outside of having a conversation that was only meant to further protect the therapist – NOT me.
Run far away from these individuals and this dangerous practice. It is not a safe place for those experiencing trauma.

Jess is, in my experience, incompetent and dangerous as a marriage counselor for high conflict couples. In late July of 2023, we sought out her help. Instead, she inflicted uneccessary emotional trauma on my family from which we are still recovering. The contempt I saw in her face and heard in her tone after only briefly meeting with each of us separately causes me to suspect a problem with her projecting something personal into the session. She demonstrated ill-informed bias by calling in law enforcement to manage non-violent emotional distress in a therapeutic setting. My current therapist, our subsequent marriage counselor, a social worker, and the social worker she sent to my home have all verbally recognized the innapropriateness of and harm caused by her missteps. Two of those have encouraged us to file a report with the licensing board. I don’t typically write reviews, but this felt far too important to not do so.

I have known Jennifer, owner of The Brave Life Therapy, for about ten years professionally and personally. She truly is a No B.S. therapist (and person!) and works unbelievably hard for her clients, staff, and practice. I have not hesitated to refer clients to her, especially with her professional expertise. Knowing her, this high quality therapy easily carries over to her expectations for staff as well. If you are on the fence, definitely reach out!

Margaret Beymer is an unprofessional psychiatrist whose primary concern is to squeeze as much money out of her clients as possible.
An insurance code for services “provided” was added on to my bill, however according to my medical records and her charting, she can not substantiate this charge. She did not provide therapeutic advice, or make any changes to my medication regimen. Yet she still charged me as if she did.
Margaret is a fraud and she and LifeStance will hear from my lawyer if the matter is not resolved.
Make sure you check your medical records and billing statement before you give these people your money.

I have struggled with my mental health most of my life. I have had some really dark periods, and I was in the middle of my worst days when I started seeing Megan for EMDR therapy. I was new to therapy and didn’t know what I was looking for, except I knew the 5 therapists I had seen previously were not it. While seeing Megan, I started seeing Robyn for extra support. Megan and Robyn teamed up to help me through my darkest days. I still struggle and have hard times, but not like before. I’m not exaggerating to say, that together, they saved my life. I am grateful I found Indy Therapy and Counseling.

Joel at Indy Therapy and Counseling is fantastic! The practice is easy to find in Indianapolis and there is a lot for parking. He incorporates Brainspotting, CBT techniques, and Internal Family Systems while creating a comfortable environment for his clients. As a fellow professional working in a different state, I highly recommend this practice, especially Jourdan, to those looking for care in Indy. Indy T&C was so welcoming and friendly! I was nervous to take the step to go to therapy, but I’m very happy I did! I worked with Maggie, and my sessions with her we’re just what I needed. Just simply having someone to talk to that really listened and cared was great. Maggie was so kind and knowledgeable. If you’re on the fence about going to therapy, you absolutely should give it a try and you won’t regret it! My first few sessions were weekly but then I switched to every 2-4 weeks depending on my schedule and needs. They are very flexible and willing to do whatever fits your needs and lifestyle!

I have been attending weekly therapy sessions with Joel for a year and some change now, and my experience has been nothing short of exceptional. Joel welcomed me to this practice and helped me to feel comfortable talking about difficult subjects, even in our first meeting. Not only is he an amazing therapist who always has a handout ready and/or information/resources regarding a certain topic available, he gives educated “lessons” and advice, drawing various outlines on his whiteboard that puts the information into perspective and allow the patient to fully grasp specific concepts. As someone who values the science behind a concept, Joel takes the time to help me understand the psychology and reasonings behind why I do what I do. I feel heard and supported during each session with Joel.
Crystal, the office manager, is so prompt, professional, caring, and just, a very great person. She always has my papers printed off for me to collect before my sessions and replies quickly to my questions on the scheduling application they use.
Overall, my experience here has been phenomenal. 10/10.

0 stars is what this place deserves. They took forever to contact me after my Dr referred me to them. Took forever to schedule an appointment. Scheduled the first one, and they called back 2 hrs later to cancel the appointment due to the Dr not in the office that day weeks out. Next available was over a month out and I told them to forget about it. Then they called me again late Mar and scheduled another appointment. Texted me the day before to confirm my appointment for the next day. Then less than an hour later they texted to cancel that one ad well, Dr won’t be in the office again and wanted me to reschedule. I have never been able to get ahold of anyone at the Greenwood office, always got a recording they were closed in the middle of the day, on lunch or no one available. When the office called me back, the lady was completely rude and disrespectful and couldn’t care less I told them to not bother trying to help me since they just keep canceling my appointment and want to reschedule, like I ever got in. Absolutely ridiculous and unprofessional!! If I could report their behavior and disconcern to someone needing help I’d love to do so cause this place sure has no concern for anyone! Your business is horrible and you don’t deserve to be in business!!!

Highly recommend that you do NOT go here if you want to keep your mental health in check. I’ve went without my medication for several days before due to negligent staff and my husband has had a similar experience in going without his medication for 2 WEEKS! When is this considered malpractice? This office is very disorganized. These medications save peoples lives and we all shouldn’t have to worry about playing phone tag for days trying to get our prescriptions filled.

I went to the Greenwood location, I was a bit skeptical. The office was easy to locate, but it looked completely bare like they could make a quick getaway if they needed to. Reminds me of those movies where people set up a fake office to run a ponzi scheme or some other kind of scam. Cameras everywhere. Waiting area is a big empty room with a few plastic chairs… definitely easy to clean and sanitize though. No decor at all, absolutely bare. You’re led to a room with a TV and camera, and a couch and chair. The couch is way too far away from the TV to be effective, so instead I took the chair and moved it up to the TV and sat on that instead. I saw the NP, Josh, he spent over an hour with me. I felt he was effective for what I needed to address. It’s not the most ideal because I would prefer it to be in person, but some people like the virtual meetings instead. I still felt it was useful though, because other than my primary doctor, I felt like Josh was the only one that I got any meaningful outcome from. I wish I didn’t have to travel to an office just to see a doctor virtually though, especially since I feel that could be done at my own home, on my own computer instead.

I was able to overlook the therapists who disappeared overnight with no explanation, the incompetent billing team and the nursing staff who required multiple contacts to get prescription refills over the past year. But today I was four – yes, *4* – minutes late for a quarterly appointment with the psychiatric NP and my appointment was canceled. Four. Minutes. I drove 40m to this office after working an overnight shift on 3.5 hours of sleep, to be told his schedule was “so tight and so full” he would be unable to see me for all of 15 minutes because I was 4 minutes late. I could “wait around for an hour” to “see if anyone else cancels” or reschedule entirely.
This is a psychiatric care practice with patients on necessary care medications for serious illnesses that require these “in person (virtual)” appointments in order to continue taking medications. And the NP/office had no issue telling me “oh well, better luck next time”…. for being 4 minutes late. Even worse, it was clear the NP was not busy whatsoever as I stood there and watched the office staff and him message each other in front of me…. the time it took to do that is more than the amount of time it would have taken to take my blood pressure and turn on the virtual consult TV.
I have never in my entire life had an appointment cancelled for being 4 minutes late, much less a medical appointment for serious medications important for daily functioning. This practice says “we care” in the tagline, but apparently they only “care” about shoving appointments so close together for profit that even a 4 minute window of lateness gets a patient cancelled.
This is bottom of the barrel care and this practice should be avoided.

Do not take your special needs children here. I stick it out for a bit over a year, I tried really hard to overlook the negligence and the impersonal care, the rudeness and or absolute silence from office staff, but I finally have enough. Those of us with Autism and special needs children are desperate for medication management and behavioral guidance from “specialists” and Indiana lacks specialists for this disability. My experience:
– first visit intake was dominated by the nurse talking about her children’s disabilities instead of evaluating my child and our needs.
– Subsequent visits were virtual but our Dr. switched us to a nurse practicer out of Texas who without evaluating and getting to know my child, was diagnosing him with disabilities he doesn’t have and suggesting extreme medications.
– After complaining I was told our original Dr. would manage my son. His visits were monthly but medications were never called in, notes for school administered medication. Not provided. I’d call, email, a dozen times with no reply.
– In May my son had a very traumatic meltdown. When I called the office desperate to talk to the Dr., it took days for him to contact me and he only did because I emailed him. I asked for an appointment, I asked to discuss the incident, he only wanted to call in a medication with no consult. I asked for a follow up 2 weeks later and he said he would take care of it and never did. He had zero interest in what had occurred.
– Finally, school had begun and the school needs a new Dr. note to provide medication – I’ve called, emailed half a dozen times- no note.
I have contacted my Developmental Specialist and she provided the note immediately and will take over the medication management. This office is about reoccurring revenue. A 15 min routine consult once a month for 250$ – no real patient care, no real medication management. Zero respect for patients, parents and mental health needs.

Dr. Monte aka Dr. B is the BEST. I have had reservations for years on being treated for what I knew was ADHD and I am glad I finally stepped out of my comfort zone and found Dr. B! She is the most genuine Doctor that I have ever met, and you can tell that you aren’t just another patient on the list, as this has been my experience with many in the mental health network. If you want to be treated by someone who makes you feel seen, heard, and understood, look no further.

I was referred to this office to get some testing done. I was pleasantly surprised at the speed in which this whole process took. My rough estimate would probably be around 2 months, diagnosis and all. Even so, I never felt rushed. I felt like I was being listened to in a judge free environment. Every staff member I encountered was nothing but kind and patient. After I received my diagnosis, I received a lengthy and detailed report about 3 business days later. It provided me with information I found very helpful and I’m grateful for my time spent with this office. This is a place I would feel comfortable recommending to friends and family.

I had a great experience. I was really worried about this place based on all the negative reviews, but I really did not have any other options; everywhere else I contacted had huge waitlists or were simply not accepting new clients. I came to leave a review for anyone else in the same boat who is considering taking a chance on this place. I was an adult needing reassessment having lost my diagnosis from over a decade ago. They did a thorough re-evaluation to make sure everything was okay. They don’t really communicate via phone, BUT you will have really prompt and accurate information via email and your patient portal. They emailed me back a few weeks after I called and left a voicemail (one of the few places that even responded at all), I had an appointment offered within the month (there are three appointments necessary for assessment). I asked lots of questions about pricing and they told me the max out of pocket cost I could expect and were very transparent about the whole thing. The whole process took about 3 months to get the final assessment, but this is standard and actually quite good. I saw Dr. Janine Miller and she did a thorough and conscientious job and always made sure I fully understood all costs and timelines and the clinical results. The assessment was done by a clinical PHD student, but they were professional and prompt and collaborated closely with Dr. Miller. I really felt like my own health was being prioritized and that I was getting the best assessment possible, and that I had a voice in my own diagnosis. The address on google is incorrect, I think they changed location, but the website google takes you to is correct. I used a throwaway google account to write this review because I don’t need it publicly documented that I got an assessment.

Worst service ever!! The referral was sent for my daughter in January. My appt was made in June. I did the hour intake June 9 th and the Dr said I would receive a call within two weeks to schedule her in person evaluation. July came and no call. I started calling and leaving messages. Voice mail states they will call back within 24 hours. I waited a week to two weeks between each message. I called at least 50 times, no joke but only left 3 messages. Finally someone answered. I was told she could not schedule appts. Only the scheduler could and she was out until Wednesday. It was Friday. So I’ve called every Wednesday for a month!!! No one ever answered again. I just saw on their website they were permanently closing!! That would’ve been nice to know considering my daughter has been waiting for her testing for months now!! This has delayed the treatment she needs. Now we have to start all over!! So glad this place is closing.

Same story as everyone else! Rude front office staff, late medical student to conduct my testing, was told the test would take 4 hours and it took 6, and the office is filthy! Dirty bathroom, unvacuumed carpet, dirty tables… just overall really gross. I don’t even want to know what my insurance is going to bill me after all of this. I’ve let my primary care provider know about how terrible this place is… I wish I had read reviews before scheduling my appointments!

I waited nine months for my initial appointment. Then they asked if they could reschedule it for an earlier time and then they ended up calling me an hour after my original scheduled appointment time. The testing felt super rushed but once it was done, I still have not heard back about my report. I called to check on it and they said they called me back and I never heard anything back.

The testing that I went in for was very basic for this field. It wasn’t complicated, but they managed to drag it out in the most ridiculous fashion, gaslight me and recommend treatment that doesn’t make a bit of sense for my diagnosis.
When I arrived for the testing, the person administering the testing didn’t show up. No big deal, I understand that that can happen. People have emergencies. I was stuck waiting in the waiting room for 45 minutes longer than expected, but again, I get it things happen.
I was promised that I would get the results of my test 3-4 weeks following the testing. Even told, that I could schedule an appointment with my primary care doctor around that time (I’m so glad I didn’t.) At the end of the 4th week, I still had not even received a call to schedule the appointment to go over the testing. So I called the office, where they informed me that it would be another 6 weeks before I would be able to get my results. I asked for a refund because that was not at all what I signed up for, magically, I suddenly had an appointment for the next day. Fantastic. (I generally try to avoid creating a big fuss and asking for a refund, but for the amount I paid for these services, this was completely unacceptable, especially when they had told me they had the results.)
The doctor that I spoke to was great, but she said the official report wouldn’t be in until the following Monday, but she was going to be on vacation. She would make sure that it was sent after she got back. Again, I was totally okay with this, I understand that. The following Monday, I never received a report. So I waited until THURSDAY. I finally called and asked if I could get the report. I needed it to speak to my primary care doctor. The lady who I spoke to said she called me and left a message (she didn’t) to confirm that I wanted it emailed (I had confirmed that with the doctor several times). I said I did, and she said she would send it over immediately. Guess what? Never received the report. She even confirmed my email address while I was on the phone with her.
So I called on Friday. I asked to have the report sent. I sat on the phone with her while she sent it, and guess what! I suddenly got the report.
Going over the report was disappointing because it showed a severe lack of understanding for my diagnosis. Overall I would NEVER recommend this office to anyone for anything. I wished I had read the other reviews before even considering this place.

The front staff is cold and not very helpful, yet I did have a good experience with the doctor and he explained what I needed to do to get evaluated and get my test results. It took time but I was able to get my diagnosis with 6 weeks. I would not go through them to get my medication, I sought other places for that.

They told me they accept my insurance and had me sign all the paperwork under that impression. They took all of my personal information, even though I specifically told them not to do so until my insurance was confirmed. I feel completely violated. At the last minute, they told me my insurance isn’t accepted and even called me after hours to deliver this news. Their intake process and customer service are terrible, and the staff handling this should be fired immediately. Avoid this place as far as possible. I will be talking to a lawyer about this situation.

Looks like they took down their Facebook page or blocked me so now no one can see my review. Please do NOT go here if you are looking for an autism assessment they are NOT qualified to diagnose autism in adult females/AFABS and use outdated criteria. My assessor didn’t even know what he was doing! Seemed like his first time ever. Not to mention it was extremely unprofessional. If you’re not presenting like “Rain Man” or you’re “high functioning Autistic” do not go here for an evaluation. It is a waste of money and time. Go somewhere better, you get what you pay for. I should have known accepting Medicaid for an autism eval was a huge red flag. They also didn’t mention in the beginning that once the test was complete, I would have to pay EXTRA for my results. Shady business all around and I heard they don’t pay their contracted employees. STAY FAR AWAY. And Hope Haven, don’t bother responding to this. You will not gaslight me any further.

I usually don’t write reviews, but I feel like my story needs to be told.
I used Hope Haven for therapy a few years ago, and my experience was disappointing. The owner is money-hungry and does not truly care about the clients. I had been seeing a therapist there for a while, but I didn’t feel like they were a good fit for me. When I asked to switch to a different therapist, the owner called me and told me that my therapist was a good friend of hers, implying that my concerns were invalid. She also gaslit me into believing that the problem wasn’t my therapist—it was me. Because my mental health was in a fragile state at the time, I believed her and continued seeing that therapist until she went on maternity leave.
During her leave, I was assigned to an art therapist within the same agency, and the difference was night and day. I was making real progress, and for the first time, I wasn’t leaving my sessions feeling worse about myself. When my original therapist returned, I made it clear that I no longer wanted to see her and wished to stay with the art therapist. My art therapist was completely understanding and said she would notify the agency and put me on her schedule.
Shortly after, I received a phone call from the owner informing me that I was not allowed to switch therapists. Not because the art therapist couldn’t take me, but because my original therapist was a personal friend of the hers. The only way I could continue with the art therapist was if I kept seeing my original therapist as well. That was the final straw—I chose to leave the agency altogether.
Unfortunately, I recently contacted the agency again to see if I could reconnect with the art therapist. I received a call back stating that the only way I could return was if I went back to my original therapist. I wasn’t even allowed to be on the waitlist. The receptionist specifically told me that the owner said she had already made this clear to me.
I 10/10 would not recommend this agency if you truly value mental health care from people who put clients first rather than their own financial interests. This review is not a reflection of all the therapists at this agency—many of them are great—but rather of the owner, who chooses to prioritize money over the well-being of clients. From the looks of all the bad reviews, she’s getting exactly what she deserves.

They get you right in only to experience less than great customer service. Please read the reviews as I overlooked them as upset customers who may have been unreasonable, no, they were right. Fabrice was an amazing practitioner! My son was not uncomfortable with the testing and did well. We made the trip three times to see the practitioners. Testing was finished, I was told id receive a call in up to 30 days.I’ve been fighting since May to get my child’s results for school. Here we are mid august and the practitioner has called with me on the phone as well leaving a message for the clinic to release his results. Ridiculous service. There is no excuse, and if there is I wouldn’t know since no one is communicating. If you go here get your mommy bear out you’ll be needing it! Will update my review once my child’s pediatrician who has now sought out getting the results, gets a response.

Hope Haven has amazing therapists, however Tiffanie in billing was a nightmare to work with. Originally she did a verification of my insurance and had me sign off that I’d pay $30 a copay, before services began. I have been receiving services for 3 months now. This week I was told that there was a mistake made when verifying my account and that I had to meet an outrageous deductible before the $30 copay began. Which I believe tiffanie should’ve caught prior to me starting services. She said she was doing a courtesy so that was on me. Moving forward I’ll make sure to check my benefits on my own and not trust a ” courtesy ” verification. Because clearly that’s difficult to do. I really enjoyed my services but I don’t appreciate how I was treated. Being that this was my first time ever receiving services, I would have never known. Overall she was just not a pleasure to work with.

The intake process was extremely long. It took 2 weeks for someone to contact us about an appointment. When finally scheduled the therapist canceled as she said she only does this part time and her main job is a professor. She kept saying that. We never even had a session. I felt as if the therapist was only focused on making extra income on the side instead of helping. I’ve never been to a therapist who only has one time she is available and emphasizes this is just her part time job. Very unprofessional and made us feel as if we were a bother. Main point is if you’re a therapist and only taking therapy as a part-time job for extra income you probably shouldn’t be a therapist. As it comes off as you do not care and have no empathy. I would suggest better therapists that show empathy and care about helping others instead of a pay check.

As a conclusion to my clinical training before licensure, my experience at Hope Haven has been highly positive. The guidance I have received has been exemplary, and I feel well supported in my role as a doctoral clinician providing support to clients with a wide range of complex challenges. I feel truly blessed to have the opportunity to gain supervisory experience from the owner, Dr. Johnson, who exemplifies the role of a psychologist. Based on my experience, Dr. Johnson is of a rare caliber of a psychologist who is deeply committed to the profession, as evidenced by her compassion for her staff and clients under our care. I arrived at Hope Haven from out of state, and the support I received helped me to make the transition seamlessly. The positive support I have received is beyond measure. For potential clients, I highly recommend Hope Haven as a resource for attending to the complex challenges that can arise amid difficult life challenges. I can attest firsthand that through the support and guidance of Dr. Johnson, clients will be supported, nurtured, and offered the opportunity to engage in a process that has the potential to transform their lives in a positive manner.

Frequently asked questions about psychologists in Indianapolis
How do I choose a psychologist in Indianapolis?
Choosing a psychologist in Indianapolis involves a careful look at licensure, specialties, and experience that matches your goals. Start by confirming that the clinician holds a valid Indiana license as a psychologist (often listed as LP) and check for any relevant credentials, board certifications, or affiliations with professional organizations. Consider the psychologist’s areas of expertise, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or substance use, and verify that they have worked with individuals who share your background or concerns. It’s helpful to read patient reviews and request an initial consultation to gauge rapport, communication style, and whether you feel comfortable sharing openly. Finally, assess practical factors like location, availability, and whether they accept your insurance or offer affordable options. Making the right choice often hinges on a strong therapeutic fit and clear upfront expectations.
What types of therapy do psychologists in Indianapolis provide?
Psychologists in Indianapolis offer a broad range of therapy approaches designed to help with different concerns. Common modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on how thoughts affect feelings and behavior, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which combines skills for emotion regulation and distress tolerance. Other widely used approaches are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy that explores past experiences, and interpersonal therapy for relationship issues. Some clinicians specialize in trauma-focused therapies such as EMDR or exposure-based methods. It’s typical for psychologists to tailor a treatment plan that may blend several modalities to address your unique needs, preferences, and cultural context, with regular assessments to track progress.
How much does therapy cost in Indianapolis, and is it covered by insurance?
Therapy costs in Indianapolis vary based on factors like the clinician’s training, location, and whether services are in-network with your insurer. Typical per-session fees range from moderate to higher, with a co-pay or deductible applying if you have private insurance. Some therapists offer a sliding scale based on income, and many clinics provide options for out-of-network reimbursement through your insurer. If you use Medicare or Medicaid, coverage may differ by program and setting. Additionally, you can discuss payment plans, teletherapy fees, and any added costs for testing or assessment during the initial intake so you have a clear understanding of your potential total cost.
What should I expect in my first session with a psychologist?
The first session typically centers on an intake assessment and establishing a secure therapeutic alliance. You can expect questions about your current concerns, past experiences, medical history, and any medications. The clinician will explain confidentiality and its limits and discuss informed consent and the proposed treatment plan. You’ll have the opportunity to share your goals, ask questions, and learn about the expected frequency and duration of sessions. Many psychologists also use brief questionnaires to gauge mood, sleep, or stress levels at the outset and over time to monitor progress.
How long does therapy usually last, and how often are sessions?
The length of therapy varies widely. Some individuals engage in short-term work lasting several weeks, while others pursue long-term therapy spanning months or years, depending on goals and complexity. A common schedule is weekly 50-minute sessions, though some people shift to biweekly sessions as progress occurs. For certain concerns, like crisis or specific skill-building, more intensive schedules may be recommended. The treatment plan is regularly reviewed and adjusted in collaboration with your psychologist to determine if goals are being met or if a different approach is needed.
Can psychologists provide therapy via telehealth in Indianapolis?
Yes, many Indianapolis psychologists offer teletherapy or remote counseling options using HIPAA-compliant platforms. Telehealth can increase access for those with transportation challenges, busy schedules, or concerns about in-person visits. While teletherapy is appropriate for a wide range of concerns, some situations may require in-person assessment, particularly when thorough testing or physical examinations are needed. If you consider teletherapy, confirm the clinician’s technology, privacy safeguards, and any differences in cost or coverage compared with in-person sessions.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist, and when should I see each?
A psychologist provides psychotherapy and may conduct psychological testing to understand thoughts, emotions, and behavior. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medications and may offer medical management for mental health conditions. People with mood disorders, psychosis, or conditions that may benefit from pharmacotherapy often see a psychiatrist, sometimes alongside a psychologist for therapy. If you are unsure which path fits your needs, starting with a psychologist for therapy and a medical evaluation can help determine whether medication is appropriate.
How do I know if therapy is helping, and when should I adjust the approach?
Progress in therapy can be measured through self-reports, clinician observations, and, when appropriate, standardized outcome measures. Signs of improvement include reduced symptom severity, better functioning at work or school, improved relationships, and greater coping skills. If you do not notice meaningful change after a reasonable period—often several weeks to a few months—it may be wise to reassess the goals, try a different therapeutic approach, or consider a referral to a clinician with a different style or specialty. Open communication with your psychologist helps tailor the plan to your progress.
What resources exist in Indianapolis for mental health crisis or emergencies?
In a crisis, you should seek immediate help by calling 911 for emergencies or using the nationwide 988 crisis line for immediate emotional support. For ongoing resources, you can contact Indiana 2-1-1 to find local crisis services, hotlines, and community programs. Hospitals with psychiatric emergency services, university clinics, and community mental health centers in the Indianapolis area also provide 24/7 crisis care. If you or someone you know is at imminent risk, do not wait for help—reach out to emergency services or a crisis line right away.
How can I prepare for therapy and involve family or support people?
Preparation for therapy includes reflecting on your goals, concerns, and history, and bringing any relevant documents or records. It’s important to understand privacy boundaries and to discuss family involvement as your treatment plan allows. If you want a family member or partner involved, you can request consent from you and the involved person to share information. During planning, set clear expectations about roles, boundaries, and the level of involvement desired, which helps maintain safety and trust while ensuring your autonomy remains respected.
