Nurse Practitioner Amy Horn is amazing! She was lovely to speak with and really made me feel like I wasn't alone in everything I had going on. She is very personable and funny, and I found her extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I have put off being seen for too long, and I am so glad to have been referred here.

NP decided to treat my hour session as her own. Talking more about herself and her upcoming vacation to Texas for a knitting convention. Talked about her multiple children and what they were up to in their lives, about her husband, and then proceeded to talk to me in detail about her Labaubus?!? Doesn’t listen to anything after I said ‘substance abuse’ and immediately started looking at where I can buy new meds cheaper, which is nice, but why do I not have any knowledge of what these meds do or why she chose them for me. I rebooked and left shocked. Got a bill for $550 after cancelling the second appointment. There is no way this is legal!

Lauren Elayne

Ive never left a review for a therapist. I’ve been utilizing therapy for 30 years, and on a quest for the perfect fit. I thought I found that at BraveLife Therapy with Courtney Harrough. We did months worth of work together; however, as time went on she became harsh, promised to try various forms of therapy with me with ZERO follow through, switched practices, increased her price from $60 per session to $140, and then changed her schedule with ZERO warning. None of these changes were told to me in person – I had to find out via email. After expressing concern for her inconsistency as a therapist, tactfully and respectfully, I was let go by CP, had my file handed off, and it was all clearly retaliatory. She is a DANGER to clients who are experiencing distress, abandonment, trust issues, and great turmoil. Horribly inconsistent and lacking in empathy. She made many promises that she never backed up, and the lack of follow through was entirely unacceptable. I cannot express how disappointed I am in her as a human being, as well as her supervisor Pat. When I reached out to file a complaint she was condescending and unhelpful. Offered zero solutions outside of having a conversation that was only meant to further protect the therapist – NOT me. Run far away from these individuals and this dangerous practice. It is not a safe place for those experiencing trauma.

I have known Jennifer, owner of The Brave Life Therapy, for about ten years professionally and personally. She truly is a No B.S. therapist (and person!) and works unbelievably hard for her clients, staff, and practice. I have not hesitated to refer clients to her, especially with her professional expertise. Knowing her, this high quality therapy easily carries over to her expectations for staff as well. If you are on the fence, definitely reach out!

Kami Noland

Jess is, in my experience, incompetent and dangerous as a marriage counselor for high conflict couples. In late July of 2023, we sought out her help. Instead, she inflicted uneccessary emotional trauma on my family from which we are still recovering. The contempt I saw in her face and heard in her tone after only briefly meeting with each of us separately causes me to suspect a problem with her projecting something personal into the session. She demonstrated ill-informed bias by calling in law enforcement to manage non-violent emotional distress in a therapeutic setting. My current therapist, our subsequent marriage counselor, a social worker, and the social worker she sent to my home have all verbally recognized the innapropriateness of and harm caused by her missteps. Two of those have encouraged us to file a report with the licensing board. I don't typically write reviews, but this felt far too important to not do so.

Joe Murchie

I have struggled with my mental health most of my life. I have had some really dark periods, and I was in the middle of my worst days when I started seeing Megan for EMDR therapy. I was new to therapy and didn't know what I was looking for, except I knew the 5 therapists I had seen previously were not it. While seeing Megan, I started seeing Robyn for extra support. Megan and Robyn teamed up to help me through my darkest days. I still struggle and have hard times, but not like before. I'm not exaggerating to say, that together, they saved my life. I am grateful I found Indy Therapy and Counseling.

Joel at Indy Therapy and Counseling is fantastic! The practice is easy to find in Indianapolis and there is a lot for parking. He incorporates Brainspotting, CBT techniques, and Internal Family Systems while creating a comfortable environment for his clients. I have been able to open up with him, something that isn’t easy for me and have had difficulty with when seeing other therapists. Great option if you're looking for a caring, experienced therapist in Indy!

Kat has been an amazing resource for me as I process my PTSD through therapy. She is especially adept with EMDR, which has changed my life and allowed me to tackle my anxiety and depression independently. Indy T&C was so welcoming and friendly! I was nervous to take the step to go to therapy, but I’m very happy I did! I worked with Maggie, and my sessions with her we’re just what I needed. Just simply having someone to talk to that really listened and cared was great. Maggie was so kind and knowledgeable. If you’re on the fence about going to therapy, you absolutely should give it a try and you won’t regret it! My first few sessions were weekly but then I switched to every 2-4 weeks depending on my schedule and needs. They are very flexible and willing to do whatever fits your needs and lifestyle!

The self-respect, confidence, pride, relaxation and sunshine are all taking priority in my life and sitting in the lead chairs now. Joel and his team are absolutely amazing. THANK YOU, Joel, you mean the world to me, and I truly appreciate you!! See you next week!!

Olivia

I have been attending weekly therapy sessions with Joel for a year and some change now, and my experience has been nothing short of exceptional. Joel welcomed me to this practice and helped me to feel comfortable talking about difficult subjects, even in our first meeting. Not only is he an amazing therapist who always has a handout ready and/or information/resources regarding a certain topic available, he gives educated "lessons" and advice, drawing various outlines on his whiteboard that puts the information into perspective and allow the patient to fully grasp specific concepts. As someone who values the science behind a concept, Joel takes the time to help me understand the psychology and reasonings behind why I do what I do. I feel heard and supported during each session with Joel. Crystal, the office manager, is so prompt, professional, caring, and just, a very great person. She always has my papers printed off for me to collect before my sessions and replies quickly to my questions on the scheduling application they use. Overall, my experience here has been phenomenal. 10/10.

The 5 stars are for Amy Abuasabeh only. I was not a fan of the company itself, but Amy was one of the best NPs/psychiatric providers I have ever had. I saw her for three years, and I am truly saddened that she changed companies and I can no longer see her. She was an incredible provider who helped me tremendously with my care. She was kind, humble, easy to talk to, and genuinely compassionate. She always wanted to help in any way she could, and she knew how to do so effectively. She made sure I had refills when I needed them and was flexible and thoughtful with medication adjustments and changes. She understood what would work for me and what wouldn’t, and she never gave up trying to find the right solutions. She rarely said no unless it was absolutely necessary, and she consistently worked to find options that would help me. She was truly a rare gem, and I am very grateful for the care she provided. I wish her all the best in her steps.

I added my credit card for payment, they didn’t allow me time to get a payment plan set up and took $1200 from my CHECKING account at once. My mortgage money right before Christmas. This is an awful business. They do not care about anyone’s mental health, I did not have my debit card as my default payment method so how did this get taken from my checking account? Again, if you’re willing to take someone’s entire paycheck as soon as they get paid, you are a disgraceful, disgusting excuse for a mental health provider.

Audrey is the most one of the most kind hearted people I know. She is positive and has a contagious smile. She has a great, judgment free listening ear. Katie Walsh

Chris has seen my son (10yo) for the last 1.5 years. We’ve seen measurable growth and learned so much about anxiety and OCD and how to parent our child. Our son has felt the shift and his confidence continues to develop. His teachers and other family members have taken note of the changes in him. We’ve recommended him to others who we know would benefit from his knowledge and expertise. We’re so thankful for the tools Chris has taught us.

I reached out to Chris 2 years ago when I was struggling with anxiety, grief, rumination, and OCD-adjacent behavior and thoughts. Chris was and has been the greatest help in my journey of understanding my own behavior and he has taught me how to utilize different tools to make everyday life less overwhelming. Chris is relatable, encouraging, and thoughtful in every single conversation. He has been a true blessing. I highly recommend!

When Chris and I first met, my son’s condition was severe. We collaborated with multiple therapists, and Chris worked seamlessly with them all to meet our son’s needs. He honored our family’s religious practices and addressed concerns about religious OCD with great respect, ensuring we could remain true to who we are. My son always looked forward to his sessions with Chris, drawn to his humor and lighthearted approach. When therapy fatigue set in, Chris was the first to suggest alternative options that prioritized my son’s well-being. Today, I can say something I never thought I’d say again: my son is thriving! Thank you, Chris!

I cannot say enough good things from working with Chris. He was easy to work with and so helpful with all the different techniques addressing my OCD. I sought OCD-specific help at a point in my life when I felt completely hopeless. I feel unbelievably grateful to have found Chris and his OCD-specific approach/expertise, something that was incredibly different from the therapy I had been receiving (for years!). Chris remained extremely compassionate while challenging my anxiety, allowing me to make change I had genuinely never imagined in/for my life. I feel MUCH more equipped to handle anxiety when it arises and have since felt significantly less depressed and engaged with life in turn. I would highly, highly, highly recommend investing in services at Indy OCD; Chris not only offered me hope at a time in which I had none, but provided me with the tools that has allowed me to continue to feel hopeful and capable.

Very welcoming and inclusive feeling environment. I attended sessions in 2023 / 2024 I think and the stopped due to life events. I started back this year and have no complaints. I only do neurofeedback therapy which has been great for my overall mental wellness. Jaclyn is great – highly recommend.

All 4 family members of my household have been seeing therapists at this location for over 8 years. We have seen 4 – 5 of their therapist and have had nothing but great experiences. We also have a dozen friends, family, and coworkers who use this same office and also have nothing but glowing reviews.

It had taken me a long time to want to return to seeing a therapist. Because my mental health had been declining, I chose to be brave and started speaking to someone in 2023. Just about a month ago I had learned that either my current therapist or my previous therapist has violated my HIPPA rights by disclosing my sessions with my husbands’ therapist (which is at the same facility and why I started going here in the first place). Not only has this affected my mental health in a negative way, it’s caused me to not trust seeing or talking to anyone at this place or want to seek help anywhere else! People wonder why mental health is never taken seriously and it’s hard to find someone you can trust talking to! The sad thing is, is that if either of my therapists (or both) has done this to me, what other patients rights are being violated? I do NOT recommend this place and I will never be returning! Hopefully one day I will find someone I can again trust to talk to, but Indy Counseling has lost my trust and my respect.

I’ve been with Julie for over 6 years now and she has truly helped my life in ways I can’t explain. Without her I wouldn’t have gotten through or continue to go through by myself. I respect this women so much and have so much gratitude. Both locations have been so welcoming, calm, and professional from the rooms being so cozy to the snack bars and coffee bar. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else!

Amy Ikerd has been my therapist for over a year. I was at a point in my life when I didn't trust therapist, and was so completely skeptical in believing I could achieve overcoming my biased. The more time I spent with her, the more I came to see that she is a professional with the capacity to genuinely empathize with her clients. It is my personal experience that she is trustworthy and appropriate for this particular feild of work. It takes so much for a person to come into an unknown environment and successfully achieve a sense of security and well-being. I have grown confident that she is the most trustworthy and helpful therapist I've ever had. If you are contemplating rather or not you would like to take that leap or not, and begin the process of healing, I encourage you to take the leap! Amy Ikerd will be there to meet you where you stand! Thank you so much for all your help, I can't possibly express my gratitude enough for the help you've provided me.

Everything at Indy Counseling Professionals is great! Getting set up for my first appointment was easy, Barb at the front desk will greet you by name at every appointment, and it is a very comfortable home-like environment. Rachael is great. I leave every appointment with a sense of progress, and I know that over my few months of therapy I have a had definite improvement.

I was referred to this office to get some testing done. I was pleasantly surprised at the speed in which this whole process took. My rough estimate would probably be around 2 months, diagnosis and all. Even so, I never felt rushed. I felt like I was being listened to in a judge free environment. Every staff member I encountered was nothing but kind and patient. After I received my diagnosis, I received a lengthy and detailed report about 3 business days later. It provided me with information I found very helpful and I’m grateful for my time spent with this office. This is a place I would feel comfortable recommending to friends and family.

Worst service ever!! The referral was sent for my daughter in January. My appt was made in June. I did the hour intake June 9 th and the Dr said I would receive a call within two weeks to schedule her in person evaluation. July came and no call. I started calling and leaving messages. Voice mail states they will call back within 24 hours. I waited a week to two weeks between each message. I called at least 50 times, no joke but only left 3 messages. Finally someone answered. I was told she could not schedule appts. Only the scheduler could and she was out until Wednesday. It was Friday. So I've called every Wednesday for a month!!! No one ever answered again. I just saw on their website they were permanently closing!! That would've been nice to know considering my daughter has been waiting for her testing for months now!! This has delayed the treatment she needs. Now we have to start all over!! So glad this place is closing.

Same story as everyone else! Rude front office staff, late medical student to conduct my testing, was told the test would take 4 hours and it took 6, and the office is filthy! Dirty bathroom, unvacuumed carpet, dirty tables… just overall really gross. I don't even want to know what my insurance is going to bill me after all of this. I've let my primary care provider know about how terrible this place is… I wish I had read reviews before scheduling my appointments!

I waited nine months for my initial appointment. Then they asked if they could reschedule it for an earlier time and then they ended up calling me an hour after my original scheduled appointment time. The testing felt super rushed but once it was done, I still have not heard back about my report. I called to check on it and they said they called me back and I never heard anything back.

The front staff is cold and not very helpful, yet I did have a good experience with the doctor and he explained what I needed to do to get evaluated and get my test results. It took time but I was able to get my diagnosis with 6 weeks. I would not go through them to get my medication, I sought other places for that.

My experience with Meridian Psychological Associates was less than ideal. From my initial intake appointment in August of 2021, it took almost 4 months for my test to be administered, and another month and a half to receive my results. The process took almost 5 months to complete in total, thus creating more stress in my life and allowing more time to go without proper mental healthcare. During this time, I also received several different prices for how much my testing would be. I was told that my testing was pre-approved under my insurance, and then was told at my final evaluation that I would owe almost $1,000 out of pocket. I received about five different prices for how much I would owe, and was never given a call to explain my actual cost of testing. Calls were not returned promptly at all and business seems to have a lack of structure and organization. I would not recommend this facility to anyone looking to receive mental health advocacy and results in a prompt and timely fashion.

I had a great experience. I was really worried about this place based on all the negative reviews, but I really did not have any other options; everywhere else I contacted had huge waitlists or were simply not accepting new clients. I came to leave a review for anyone else in the same boat who is considering taking a chance on this place. I was an adult needing reassessment having lost my diagnosis from over a decade ago. They did a thorough re-evaluation to make sure everything was okay. They don't really communicate via phone, BUT you will have really prompt and accurate information via email and your patient portal. They emailed me back a few weeks after I called and left a voicemail (one of the few places that even responded at all), I had an appointment offered within the month (there are three appointments necessary for assessment). I asked lots of questions about pricing and they told me the max out of pocket cost I could expect and were very transparent about the whole thing. The whole process took about 3 months to get the final assessment, but this is standard and actually quite good. I saw Dr. Janine Miller and she did a thorough and conscientious job and always made sure I fully understood all costs and timelines and the clinical results. The assessment was done by a clinical PHD student, but they were professional and prompt and collaborated closely with Dr. Miller. I really felt like my own health was being prioritized and that I was getting the best assessment possible, and that I had a voice in my own diagnosis. The address on google is incorrect, I think they changed location, but the website google takes you to is correct. I used a throwaway google account to write this review because I don't need it publicly documented that I got an assessment.

Frequently asked questions about Psychologists in Indianapolis

What types of mental health issues do psychologists treat?

Psychologists in Indianapolis provide services for a wide array of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders (such as generalized anxiety, social anxiety, and panic disorder), mood disorders (including bipolar disorder), trauma and PTSD, stress management, and relationship difficulties. Many also specialize in addressing eating disorders and addiction. The specific issues treated will largely depend on the psychologist’s training and expertise.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

It’s a common question! While both psychologists and psychiatrists work with mental health, they have distinct differences. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. Psychologists generally do not have prescriptive authority and focus on psychotherapy, psychological testing, and behavioral interventions. Understanding this distinction is key to selecting the right professional for your needs.

What does a psychological evaluation involve?

A psychological evaluation, often conducted by a clinical psychologist, is a comprehensive assessment of a person’s mental and emotional functioning. It typically includes a detailed interview, standardized psychological tests (measuring intelligence, personality, and cognitive abilities), and a review of your medical history and life circumstances. The results are used to diagnose mental health conditions and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

How long does it take to complete a psychological treatment?

The length of psychological treatment varies considerably depending on the severity of the condition, the type of therapy being used, and the client’s engagement. Some individuals may benefit from a few short-term sessions, while others may require ongoing therapy for several months or even years. Regular progress reviews are essential to adjust the treatment plan as needed.

What types of therapy do psychologists offer?

Psychologists utilize a diverse range of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Family Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). The choice of therapy depends on the individual’s specific needs and preferences. Some psychologists also specialize in particular therapies, such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

How much do psychological services cost?

The cost of psychological services in Indianapolis can vary depending on the therapist’s experience and credentials, the type of therapy, and the length of sessions. Session fees typically range from approximately $100 to $300 per hour. Insurance coverage can significantly reduce the cost, and many psychologists accept various insurance plans. It's crucial to inquire about payment policies before starting treatment.

What qualifications should I look for in a psychologist?

When choosing a psychologist, look for professionals who are licensed and have appropriate training and experience. Typically, this means holding a doctorate degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Psychology and being licensed by the state of Indiana. Verification of licensure is important to ensure the psychologist’s credentials are legitimate. Check for specialized training in the areas that are most relevant to your needs.

    What is telehealth therapy?

Teletherapy, or online therapy, involves delivering psychological services remotely using technology, such as video conferencing or secure messaging. It can be a convenient option for individuals who have difficulty attending in-person sessions due to mobility issues, geographic limitations, or time constraints. Ensuring the therapist is licensed to practice in Indiana is paramount for telehealth services.

How do I find a psychologist in Indianapolis?

There are several ways to find a psychologist in Indianapolis. You can start by searching online directories such as PsychologyToday.com or GoodTherapy.org. You can also ask for recommendations from your primary care physician, other healthcare providers, or trusted friends and family. Checking with professional organizations like the Indiana Psychological Association can also be beneficial.

What should I expect during my initial consultation?

During your initial consultation, the psychologist will typically conduct a brief interview to discuss your concerns, presenting problems, and goals for treatment. They will also explain their therapeutic approach and answer any questions you may have. This is an opportunity to assess the psychologist’s rapport and determine if they are a good fit for you.
