We stayed here the end of October 2025. The Indianapolis KOA was easy to find just off I-70. We had heard that check-in involved a tight turn near the office, but we had no issues navigating the turn with our 40’ fifth wheel and F450. Check-in was quick and easy, and we proceeded to deluxe Paw Pen Site D55, a pull-through with full hookups. We’ve stayed at KOAs with Paw Pens before, but this location had the largest fenced dog area we’ve seen to date, which was a nice surprise. Cell coverage was solid with 3 bars on both Verizon and T-Mobile. The campground has a lot of mature trees, so satellite service could be challenging depending on site location. For this overnight stay, we used our T-Mobile Home Internet and saw 35.4 Mbps download speeds instead of deploying Starlink. Campground Wi-Fi was available but slow at 3.89 Mbps download. The laundry room was clean and well maintained, with large washers and dryers. There was signage noting that the well water may stain white clothing, but we washed some white items without any issues. Take a few minutes to read the campground rules—they’re surprisingly hilarious and worth the laugh. Overall, this was a great overnight stop and one of the better KOA stays we’ve had.

An average campground. Coming in Google took us on a wrong turn into Camping World. Leaving Camping World then saw the KOA sign with an arrow. Figured it out but they either need to update their address or better signage. Check-in was quick but desk staff needs to be much more welcoming, engaging, and SMILING. Wife reserved what turned out to be a Buddy site and the only good thing was relatively close to the only bathroom/showers. Buddy sites are right on top of your neighbor. Bathroom/Showers supposedly cleaned daily but get 2.5 Stars at best. Discovered when we unhitched that the ball on my hitch needed tightening. Went to the office a few days latter to ask to borrow a couple big wrenches. Was told rather curtly they can’t borrow out any tools. I offered to have the guy accompany me but no go. Really? Thankfully a fellow camper overhead and came to my rescue. Staff appears to be all teenagers. Nice pool area for kids but not adults. Campground is close to I 70 and gas. Catholic Church 15 minutes away in Greenfield. Indianapolis about 20 minutes.

Overall it was pretty decent. The location was nice and close to everything. The campsite felt new and renovated. The biggest complaints for us was how dirty the water was and it smelled like copper. Our water filter was also brand new, just bought it less than a week prior to visiting. The sites are also not level and the gravel was extremely narrow. For how expensive this stay is I’d have expected a much higher quality for the sites. Outside of the sites, the place was nice, clean, and full of amenities.

We stayed in a premium RV site for 4 nights with swings and a fireplace. It is so nice to set out at night under the lighted gazebo. This KOA is clean, well manicured and it has a nice pool that kids will love. The staff are friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed walking and seeing the cabins that were available to rent. It also has a nice gift shop. We have stayed here twice and will definitely be back.

This is what a KOA HOLIDAY SHOULD BE. Wonderful time here stayed 4 days and could not have ask for a nicer experience, the staff was super and the site and camping areas were well maintained. Friendly place in a great location. Pizza, firewood and ice delivered to your site!

Very well maintained campground. We love traveling here with our friends from Ohio. The kids have a great time at the pool and they have plenty of buddy sites so we can camp side by side. Just had a great time again this past weekend. Looking forward to being back next season!

This is a very nice campground. It has all the things you come to expect at a KOA. It has a nice pool, clean bathrooms, and friendly staff. The sites even for a pull through was spacious. If you are in the back section of the campground you have a long walk to the shower/bathroom. They have a nice trail and bridge over a stream that runs through the campground but the trail ends right at a campsite. It would be nice if the campground would complete the trail all the way to the bathroom. The only option campers in the back section have is to either walk through campsites or walk a long way around. This can be a challenge with small children that when they say they have to go probably had to go a long time ago. Overall we enjoyed our four days stay and will certainly use the campground again.

One of the best campgrounds I’ve stayed at. I travel for work so I’ve had my fair share of staying at dumps. This place was clean, organized ,and professional, the lots were a good size and parking was fine. The brand new bath house was always clean and spotless along with the washers and dryers. If im ever back in the area this will be my go to campground to stay at.

My husband and I were here for just an overnighter going from Ohio to Arizona. We were parked right by the front of the park so I can’t speak to anywhere else in the park, but we had plenty of room to get into our spot. We left Ohio a day early so I had to contact them a couple different times on a Sunday. Even though the office was closed, I still got prompt courteous responses! The check in packet was well explained. The Wi-Fi was not fast enough to stream movies but way fast enough for normal internet cruising, which is significantly better than many places we stay! We would definitely come back here again!

Lake Haven Retreat served as our 181st stop, where we stayed for six nights. This urban RV park, while conveniently located less than 20 minutes from downtown Indianapolis, is situated in an industrial area. Be prepared for ongoing road construction when approaching – following the park’s directions is highly recommended (as of June 2025). As expected in an urban setting, there’s some ambient road noise and occasional overhead plane traffic. The sites are quite close, particularly at the shared utility hookups, and it’s worth noting that the park accommodates many long-term residents. On the positive side, check-in was exceptionally quick and friendly, and we appreciated the comprehensive information pamphlet provided. The recently updated bath and laundry facilities are a definite plus, along with clear signage, a good-sized dog park, and a secure coded entry gate. Overall, Lake Haven Retreat offers a decent and convenient option for an urban stay near Indianapolis. Overall, I would rate it a 4.1. Connectivity (3:00 pm): Park WiFi 6.25 down/0.59 up. T-Mobile 332 down/5.6 up; Verizon 291 down/11.3 up; 58 analog cable channels; 72 digital OTA channels (many duplicates).

The location was very convenient to the tract that’s where the good stops . Upon arrival the sites are poorly marked at the back of the sites. There is absolutely no water or septic at the sites. The restrooms are literally a whole in the ground(outhouse) No where to wash hands(no water). The bath house is a joke 4 showers for the men so I’m sure women’s is the same. Cheap shower curtains that blow open ever time outside door opens.cant use parking up front unless you wanna pay $40 a day. charged me extra after I arrived for camping fee.every time I turned around they wanted more money for basic needs while camping. The 5mph speed limit isn’t inforced quite time isn’t inforced people blowing air horn all hours kids on atvs & golf carts running wild all night . It was by far the worst camping experience we have ever had much less the most expensive. When I expressed my concern the ladies was like (we don’t care if you stay here or not! ) This is a $20-$25 a night camp ground at tops most certainly do not recommend staying a week for the us nationals race where they make you rent more nights than u need to start with was very disappointing!!!!!!!!!!

Really interesting place. Right next to the race track. Simple. Several outhouses, a small lace to take showers, and a place to do dishes. Marked camp sites with signs, some with electric. Grassy set up and gravel roadway between rows of sites. Have to park in grass. We tent camped and it was pretty simple. No real fire pits but place to burn in grass . Over all very great and we enjoyed it. Pretty good and very simple place.

Stayed several days for the Indy 500. Lots of space between sites so you don’t feel on top of each other. Sites only offer electrical services however there is a great shower room and bathroom near the front of the campground. The water was hot and had really good pressure. There is also a fill station as well as dump station. Plus great people. Would stay here again!

I haven’t gone in a while, but my credentials are I went from 2016-2022. I’d give it a 5 star but as I haven’t been in a while I’ll give it a 4 simply, because I don’t know what has changed. I am 15 now and this place made a lot of memories. The most upsetting thing, however, was my favorite counselor Will leaving the same year I stopped going. Other then that, it’s a friendly nice.

…sent my autistic son here- i must say, the staff was very kind, informative, and extremely patient- my son couldn’t handle overnight so i made the 40 min drive each of the 5 days so he could at least experience the camp- i am grateful of how gentle they were in figuring out a solution- my «only» reason for giving it 4 stars is «not» based on the camp itself, but moreso for it not being the «best» fit for my kiddo- because jameson is a blend of neurotypical kids «and» special needs, he did deal with mild bullying for his speech «but» the staff was on it, and the children apologized- he willingly went to the camp itself during each day, so he obviously enjoyed many aspects of it- we ended up finding a special needs camp that worked wonders for him, but i am extremely appreciative of the staff at jameson- they really went out of their way to attend to my child, and i am grateful- my only advice to parents of special needs kids is to be aware that it is a «blended» camp- not a bad thing, but one to be made aware of- in the end, he left with a wonderful award and a massive smile! way to go jameson!! ❤️

Our son had an excellent experience at Jameson this summer. It was his first-ever overnight camp, and a big step outside his comfort zone. His fellow campers and counselors were welcoming and he made a lot of new friends. When the Crowdstrike tech fiasco scrambled our travel plans on pick-up day the staff and camp director went above and beyond – a truly extraordinary effort to get him home safe and sound! Forever greatful for a great week and the outstanding extra effort to support our son and our family!

Indy River is an amazing place! This is the closest you can get to Indianapolis, and still be out in nature. A small community style campground, that has direct easy access to white river. And southwest way park, so hiking mountain biking. And canoeing and kayaking, the owners Jay and Stephanie are great people. They have made us feel welcome, and at home here. Hope you check it out, we are looking forward to a great first year. Hopefully with many more to come!

Our family had a great experience here. We rented a spot for 3 years and enjoyed camping, fishing and kayaking on the river! The owners and other site renters are awesome. The owner is a great communicator and the property is very well cared for. Having a cabin, fire pit, electricity and flush toilets made quick camping trips easy and stress free. Thanks for a great time, Indy River!

We had a group event there, and staff members were great about reservations and such for multiple campers. While they weren’t able to get us all completely adjacent, we were all very close to each other. We ordered a pile of pizzas from the restaurant on the hill; they were great to work with and tasted great too. While we had a lot of activities planned for the group on our sites, the family stuff for the kids up at the playground was an added bonus.

Our family stayed here on a whim due to just getting our camper. We were able to call and get a spot for Labor Day weekend. All staff was very nice and accommodating. The entire weekend was so great. Our kids all had the best time. Our 3 year old was very sad when it was time to hook up and leave. All the activities to do and live music to sit and listen to was so nice. We felt like we weren’t even in our home state of Indiana. It was like a vacation resort. We will definitely be back an and h. To your staff the cherry family thanks you!! Until next time.

Great place for a single person or a family to stay. Staff is very helpful and always pleasant. They have fun for the hole family from 3 years old to teenagers if they are out side kids they will love it. I have been here for 8 months and have not had any issues with theft privacy or party people. The owner has made it the type of place you can leave your camper unlocked and not have to worry about things missing when you get back.

The S & H Campgrounds was built in 1968 and remains in the original owners family. It is a large complex that requires upkeep and is being done by the staff. We stayed 3 months and never experienced any issues with other campers nor the staff. The campers are a mix of weekenders, seasonal campers, construction workers and full timers. There are a few junk RVs that need to give way to something better.||The owner is a good fellow with a heart for people and care for his staff. Seven days a week he deals with all campers according to what is best for the entire campgrounds and established business practices. On any given day he has to help campers or ask campers to leave. ||The office staff is good at what they do checking campers in, sorting incoming packages, mail and selling camping items.||The backbone of the operation are a handful of experienced maintenance personnel that not only maintain the sites but also help campers that have camper problems etc. They know almost everything that could possibly go wrong with RVs and can make repairs.||The lower area is prone to spring flooding.

Awesome campground like no other I have ever seen, from giant slides to bumper cars to putt putt golf to live music and special events through out the camping season and so much more very family oriented. They offer year round, weekend or seasonal camper sites, tent camping and cabin rentals a fishing pond and sugar Creek runs thru the grounds very well kept and maintained, couldn’t find anything negative to say, my grandkids had a blast at Halloween festival

The campground was clean with a lot of amenities. The kids loved the bumper cars and the family fun park. The cabins were not in great shape. The flooring inside was deteriorating. The cabins were clean otherwise. They did not sleep 6 as advertised. They only slept 5 Max (1 full and 3 twin beds). We had to have one of our occupants sleep in a different cabin due to this. They were aware at booking that we had 3 adults and 3 kids. Bathrooms- floor deteriorating also. There were no doors (only a shower curtain that didn’t reach across) in the women’s bathroom. The men’s bathroom was dirty. The 3 am party at the neighboring campsite was frustrating.

Do not stay. The lot they gave me was on a hill and completely un level. After trying multiple times to get a different lot, they refused. Now my camper is ruined. My bathroom door needs replaced because of the tilt my camper had. I have to pay to have a new door latch installed. Mind you this was a great new camper before this hell hole.

We were glad to get the last spot for a single night stay. It looked great online. When we pulled in to our assigned spot I had to clean up the mess of trash, broken toys, a kiddie pool, a stroller, and a bike. The «lakes» are smelly, green ponds. They must be well stocked, because we saw people fishing. The staff were very friendly and warned us against the mosquitos. If you want better than a Walmart parking lot this is that. Don’t expect a place to hang out outside or meet new travelers, most of the trailers looked like they had been there for a long time.

The sites are small, and it smelled like sewage. A goose had its feet tangled in fishing line. I tried to catch the goose and it kept getting away. I asked the person working to help the Goose, she replied it happens all the time and she will try to help it. I asked a guy fishing to help it, he said he would. I emailed the next day to see if the goose was ok and no one ever emailed me back. I should have stayed the try harder to help the goose, but we had to get to our next place by a certain time. If you fish there, pick up your fishing line!! I would have liked a response about the goose.

This is a great place to fish. Nothing bad to day in the least. Only negative comment would be the website is outdated. It states they offer cabins (2) as well as allowing tents ( 4 spots). Called was told cabins are out service until next year, called back as about setting up tent, said no longer offer. I would suggest updating the website

Went night fishing and didn’t even need bug spray. Surprisingly quite and appeared to be well maintained with plenty of trash receptacles. Small fires allowed as long as you put them out when you leave. We fished for about 8hrs and tried multiple different baits. Didn’t catch anything nor did the 4 other groups fishing that night. At least not that I saw anyway. Not Indy Lakes fault. Some nights they’re just not biting. It would be nice if they offered half off your next visit or something like that though if you don’t catch a single fish. $30 is a little pricey not to get a bite in 8hrs of fishing

Bright lights in the city. This setting isn’t camping, it’s a parking lot with a strip of grass and hook-ups. So, why then did we stay five nights? We live in our rig full-time and wanted to visit a city. We’ve now had our city fix and it should suffice for the next nine months. Indianapolis has much to offer. We enjoyed the Art Museum. There is an accessible greenway to walk or bike. It’s well-used and enjoyable. In talking with someone a few sites down from us, they stay here for three nights every year during their annual trip from Maryland to Arizona, especially for the bike trail and the easy four mile ride to locally patronized restraurants and bars. I gave a two star rating. This setting isn’t good or bad, just a little more bad than good, but we knew that from the moment we made our reservations.

The surrounding neighborhood is condemned homes and vagrants waking around. Bathroom and showers are on par with a high school gym. 5G T-Mobile is fast! No security just open gates day and night. Water power are perfect! You are basically on a strip of grass on a parking lot.

Yes, it’s a full hookup back in sight. Abit tricky to back over the curb and into the spot. Electric went out in one site, had to move to another. There was a usable restroom. Nothing going on at the fair, so the place was easy to walk, bike and investigate. Great place to see the city offerings.

Frequently asked questions about campings in Indianapolis

What types of camping experiences are available in and around Indianapolis?

Indianapolis offers a diverse range of camping options, catering to different preferences and experience levels. You can find primitive camping sites offering a truly immersive experience, typically located within state parks and forests like Brown County State Park. Alternatively, there are established campgrounds with full hook-ups, flush toilets, and camp store facilities, like Eagle Creek State Park. For those seeking a more organized experience, several private glamping sites are emerging, offering luxurious accommodations alongside the outdoors.

Are permits or reservations required for camping in Indianapolis’s state parks?

Yes, permits and reservations are strongly recommended and frequently required for camping in Indianapolis’s state parks, particularly during peak seasons. Brown County State Park, for instance, operates on a reservation system to manage crowds and ensure availability. Smaller parks may require a simple day-use permit, but it's always best to check the specific park’s website for the most up-to-date regulations and to secure your spot in advance, avoiding potential disappointment.

What are the typical fees associated with camping at Indianapolis state parks?

Camping fees at Indianapolis state parks vary based on the type of site and the time of year. Day-use fees generally range from $7 to $10, while standard camping rates can fluctuate between $20 and $30 per night. Peak season rates tend to be higher due to increased demand. Campsites with full hook-ups will usually have a higher fee, reflecting the added amenities. It’s best to visit the Indiana Department of Natural Resources website for the most precise and current cost information for each park.

What kind of amenities are typically available at Indianapolis campgrounds?

The amenities available at Indianapolis campgrounds differ significantly depending on the campground’s size and type. Many campgrounds offer picnic tables, fire rings, and access to water sources. More established campgrounds can boast electrical hook-ups, full hook-ups (water, sewer, and electricity), bathrooms, and sometimes even recreational facilities such as swimming pools or playgrounds. Always confirm the specific amenities before booking your stay.

What safety precautions should I take while camping in Indianapolis?

Camping in Indianapolis requires taking appropriate safety precautions. Be aware of local wildlife, including bears, raccoons, and snakes. Store food properly to avoid attracting animals. Always follow fire safety regulations, and never leave a campfire unattended. Check the weather forecast before your trip and be prepared for changing conditions. Carry a well-stocked first-aid kit, and let someone know your camping location and expected return time. Staying aware of your surroundings is paramount.

Are there any designated areas for dispersed camping in the surrounding counties?

Yes, several counties surrounding Indianapolis offer designated areas for dispersed camping, which is camping outside of established campgrounds and state park sites. These areas typically require minimal infrastructure, offering a more remote and solitary experience. However, dispersed camping often comes with fewer amenities, so thorough research and preparation are essential, including ensuring you are following all local regulations regarding Leave No Trace principles and site selection.

What’s the best time of year to camp in Indianapolis?

The best time to camp in Indianapolis is generally during the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October). These seasons offer pleasant weather, with comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds compared to the summer months. Summer can be hot and humid, and the campgrounds can get very busy. Winter camping is possible, but be prepared for cold temperatures and potential snow or ice, and always check park conditions before venturing out.

Are there any pet-friendly camping options in Indianapolis?

Several campgrounds in and around Indianapolis welcome pets. However, it’s crucial to confirm pet policies before making a reservation, as rules can vary significantly. Many campgrounds require pets to be kept on a leash and may have restrictions on where pets are allowed to go. Pack plenty of supplies for your furry friend, including food, water, and waste bags, and always clean up after them. Some parks have designated pet areas.

What should I bring with me when camping in Indianapolis?

When camping in Indianapolis, you’ll need to pack essential items such as a tent, sleeping bag, camping chairs, a cooler, cooking supplies, food, water, a flashlight or headlamp, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a first-aid kit. Don’t forget a map and compass or GPS device, especially if you plan on hiking or exploring. Consider bringing extra layers of clothing, as temperatures can fluctuate, and rain gear is always a good idea to have.
