I’ve used Barkerfellars for doggy day care and now for grooming and each time it just gets easier and better. Staff always friendly and greets you coming in and going out. It’s a one stop shop for your pet(s). I’m happy.

So pleased with grooming service for my 92 lb. long haired German shepherd, Groot. Hand dried through 2 coats, so soft and not stressed. . He was a show stopper before Tracy did her magic, but he is absolutely phenomenal and ready for his close up now!! Happy owner here.

I love the Barkefellers family. My pup Cooky has stayed here 3 times while we’ve been out on vacation. The last time she was there we had to extend her stay 2 extra days due to our flight being cancelled for weather related reasons. They never give me a hard time, booking is always a breeze. I can always check in on her through live webcams or call in to see how she is doing. The kindest staff I have ever met, they treat my baby like one of there own. BOOK TODAY ! You will not regret it <3

So I take both of my dogs to get their nails done here and the past two times I have taken them has not been a good experience. Today I took them in and they took our first dog in to get her nails done, and she can be a lot to handle when it comes to getting her nails trim but they have always been able to get them done. She was maybe back there for two minutes and the girls walks her back out to us and says «we can’t do her, she is freaking out to much». Mind you I told to girl that took her back what they usually have to do and the girl never attempted to try that. Also she was very rude when she brought her back out to us. Then she takes our 8 year old German Shepherd to get her nails done and you can see right though the glass. As the girl is working on her she is basically trying to man handle my dog. If you are to take your dogs there to get groomed or get nails done, I would avoid the girl with pink hair. And ask her Ava. Ava has always been able to get both of the girls nails done and is super sweet and great with my two.

They always do a wonderful job with grooming services, even with our pup being anxious. Love how much you can customize, and each groomer we’ve worked with has been very caring and considerate. Cut always comes out well, no skin irritation or cuts, and a happy boy comes out to us after each visit!

My dog absolutely loves coming to daycare here! He is always very happy and tired when he gets home. Every staff member is incredibly warm and welcoming when we walk in. I love that I can choose to have them send me updates and pictures throughout the day. I highly recommend them!

Jimmy’s group dog training classes at Uptown Pup are excellent. Each class is thoughtfully organized, interactive, and delivers real results. Jimmy is an exceptional instructor — patient, experienced, and very clear in how he demonstrates and explains each technique so it’s easy to continue the work at home. He manages the group format really well while still giving meaningful one-on-one guidance to each dog and handler. His approach is positive, practical, and tailored, and the progress from week to week is easy to see. After completing three different class programs at Uptown Pup, we feel confident and well equipped to train our dog to handle just about anything. I strongly recommend Jimmy’s group training classes at Uptown Pup for anyone seeking high-quality, effective dog training.

Folks at Uptown Pup treat my dogs and every other dog I have seen with…deight! They love dogs. Really love them. They take good care of their health and their inner selves – whatever that is for dogs. They are also extremely patient with me in terms of scheduling all the things I need to schedule. I recommend them highly.

We love Uptown Pup and so do our dogs! We use them for doggy day care, boarding, and grooming. The staff truly love our girls, communicate thoroughly, and even post some great pictures. When we show up for day care the dogs push each other out of the way to be the first out of the car. Highly recommend.

We adopted a two year old German Shorthair at the start of the year and at first I thought «what have I done?!?» But after only two weeks (of four) of day school, Frank has shown SO much improvement. Adolescent dogs are hard, especially rescues, and Katie has helped us make so much progress with him! He gets so excited at drop off and the staff always greets him so kindly. I get daily updates with homework for how to work with Frank at home, and I can tell that they really enjoy working with him. We are so grateful!

Uptown Pup is truly like a second family for my dog, PJ! From the moment we pull into the parking lot, PJ’s tail starts wagging non-stop- she can’t wait to get inside. Everyone greets her by name with genuine smiles and so much love. It’s such a comfort knowing she’s surrounded by people who truly care. Uptown Pup has been such a gift for us- they provide safe, personalized, and loving care for my sensitive pup. The owners and staff operate with such integrity, warmth and professionalism that I always feel completely at ease leaving PJ in their care. If you want your dog to be treated like family, Uptown Pup is the place! 🐾❤️

Just before we get moving in the vehicle, we tell gremlin you wanna go to camp Bow Wow he gets excited he’s wagging his tail and barking and making noises. He cannot wait to get there as we’re driving to the place. He knows where we’re driving too. He’s looking at the window getting more excited he cannot wait to see the doggies in there at the cat Bow Wow. We also say CBW and he knows that too what that meanshe knows how to get to Camp Bow. I figured if he got lost or if if he gets out of my house, he’ll go straight to Camp Bow Wow. He does have a chip and tags Plus they gave him bath and trim toe nails and did a pretty good job

J&D FAMILY

⭐ One Star – Completely Unacceptable Handling of My Dog I am extremely unsatisfied with my experience at Camp Bow Wow Lawrence and will not be returning. While watching the live cameras today, I witnessed one of your employees grab my dog by the collar in order to approach the fence. That behavior is absolutely unacceptable. In situations like that, there should be a clear understanding of canine behavior and a proper, permanent resolution, not physical handling that puts both the dog and employee at risk. Grabbing a dog by the collar is a provoking and unsafe action. Had my dog reacted defensively and bitten your employee due to the way he was handled, that responsibility would have been entirely on your staff and facility. No dog should be put in that position. This incident shows a serious lack of judgment and training. I trusted this facility to provide a safe, professional environment, and that trust has been completely broken. I am highly unsatisfied, and you have officially lost a customer.

We took our German Shepherd here at the end of 2023 for training. We had gotten her a few months prior and were struggling with certain behaviors. Mike the trainer was GREAT and taught us how to interact with her! Recently we were struggling to find a place that would give her a bath. After a poor experience with another place in the community, we thought we’d try calling Camp Bow Wow since our previous experience was so good. Kanoia did a GREAT job with her! We will definitely be regularly returning for grooming services, and likely other services as well! Highly recommend Camp Bow Wow for knowledgeable staff who care about your pets!

This place is so clean, the stuff is so polite and knowledgeable, and they are so accommodating I called and they got me in early. They also took great care of my dog and fell in love with her. She received a bath, ear cleaning, nail trim, and teeth cleaning and it was less than $100. Anywhere else that I looked was way more than that. I would recommend them to anyone that has a pet.

We adopted a deaf pit mix puppy into a home with a six year old pit mix we adopted 4 years ago with severe anxiety issues. The puppy was aggressive with the adult which was very concerning to us. As a last resort I decided that board and train was my only choice to save this puppy, and it did. It’s only been 2 weeks since he has been home- but we’ve got this! It’s on me to see the pre-aggressive behavior and intervene and I can. Board and train is a big step emotionally and financially. We have experience with special needs dogs but I was over my head here. My first responsibility was to the existing dog, and the idea of surrendering a deaf puppy was so disheartening I would have tried anything to avoid it. The bottom line here is this,. Jon and Indy K9 saved this dog’s life, there is just no other way to say it.

I chose Indy K-9 (owned by Jonathan Combs) as a trainer for my dog, Boss. I did extensive online research and conducted phone interviews searching for the right trainer. After a lot of research and speaking with Jonathan directly, I selected his 30 day course for Boss and couldn’t be happier with the results! Boss is well behaved and Jonathan has taught me so much as a new dog owner. I’ve had many questions over the last year and he’s always available to promptly reply and help me be the best dog owner I can be. Boss now visits Jonathan for boarding when I’m out of town for work. I never worry about Boss when I’m gone. I know Jonathan’s depth of knowledge, dedication to his clients (human and furry ones 🙂) and passion for the well-being of dogs are used to keep Boss physically safe, mentally happy, and emotionally secure. I’m thankful that Boss and I found Indy K-9! Sherry & Boss Foster

We brought our rescue dog here for obedience training and were very impressed with the results! Our dog has a ton of energy, but Jon and his team helped improve her demeanor and taught us how to effectively walk and train her with a pinch and ecollar. Highly recommend! We also appreciate the chance to board our dog here from time to time so she can see familiar faces.

Took My Dog Joker to Jon at Indy K-9 due to Joker needing some behavior training. Honestly I was a bit skeptical due to past experiences with other Dog trainers. So I didn’t know what to expect when it came to results at the end. Fortunately Jon was the first trainer that gave me the training results that he said he would in regards to Jokers training. And I am Very Happy I decided to have Indy K-9 do Jokers Training. I know there is still some at Home work of Me being consistent and working with Joker daily to keep and further the training Joker received from Indy K-9 as expected with any training, but Jon was able to get a Good start on it with Joker and got me to a point that I am Very Happy with.

First off, let me say that this was a very big decision for our family and we took a lot of time researching our options. I couldn’t imagine being without our pup for 4 weeks. After meeting with Jon, I felt confident and fully comfortable with our choice. Winnie, our Great Dane/Doberman puppy, isn’t a «new dog» after training. She is the same amazing girl, but with more confidence and manners. She now has a strong foundation and understands what is expected. She is much happier than when we tried other training methods. Obviously there is still work involved on our part, but Jon made sure we had all of the tools to succeed and was there to answer any questions throughout the process. The results exceeded our expectations. With 2 young kids, this training was a godsend. We are thrilled with the results and would highly recommend Indy K-9.

Indy K9 is amazing. Jon will come to your house and walk the dogs or you can send them home with him and know that your dogs are in good hands. Jon communicates well and will even send you pictures of the dogs while you are away. We used to send our dogs elsewhere and they would come back with bite marks and scratches on them and we haven’t had a problem like that with Jon! THANK YOU Jon for your help!

We took our 8-month-old Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier here for a one-week Board and Train, and it was such a great experience. He was a pretty nervous puppy so the team was flexible and we were able to drop him off before work and pick up after (which we really appreciated!!). From the first consultation, we could tell they really know dogs and truly care about them. Margaret was so helpful and provided lots of knowledge and tips, even during the consultation! They listened to what we wanted to work on and tailored everything to fit Bunker’s needs. He needed help building confidence and establishing good behaviors. They were also very supportive and helpful when we mentioned specific concerns. When we picked him up, we saw a big difference. He was more confident and more focused. They also made sure we knew how to keep up the training at home, which we really appreciated. We felt completely comfortable leaving him in their care and would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for a team that genuinely cares and gets great results.

My girl, Clover, is a ~2-year-old Beagle mix I rescued this past March. I don’t know much about her past, but it’s likely she lived in a loud, unstable environment where she wasn’t treated well and never got the chance to just be a puppy. She came to me with no training, no sense of boundaries or safety, and was completely overwhelmed by the world. Separation anxiety was my biggest concern, along with challenges like socialization, excessive barking/licking, potty training, and crate training. From the moment I met Margaret and her team, I felt hope. They are some of the most compassionate, intelligent, and genuinely caring people I’ve ever met. They welcomed Clover exactly as she was — nervous, unsure, and overwhelmed — and treated her with such gentleness and patience. And they didn’t just work with her; they worked with me too. They taught me how to read her body language, how to help her regulate, and how to show her she’s safe now. They gave us both the tools to succeed. When Clover came home from her 10-day board and train, it was like a light had switched back on inside her. Like she finally felt safe enough to just be. I will forever be grateful to Margaret and her team. You didn’t just train my dog — you gave her her life back.

Purpose Driven K9, owner Margaret and her staff, are exceptional trainers/dog handlers. I have had them train two large dogs. Murphy, an 85 lb. American Bull Terrier and Max, an 85lb. Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Both were high energy dogs who played hard, were very strong and needed training to help us manage, teach and enjoy them. The staff members were extremely knowledgeable, talented and caring trainers. They emphasized that training a dog’s owner was as important and necessary as training the dog. My dogs are now well behaved and a great joy to me and my family. I am so pleased with the results. I highly recommend Margaret and her staff!

We have a chocolate lab who is as hyper as a chihuahua! We really thought we would have a hard time training him but like a miracle Margaret had him listening and doing things that just amazed us the very first class. The owner and the employees at Purpose Driven K9 are very educated experienced and kind. Margaret is also renowned for her own training methods that she has been invited to some of the top conferences to speak on. If you want what is best for your fur baby this is undoubtedly the best place to be and should be your first choice it is mine it will be mine from this point on. Our chocolate lab just graduated the class and is doing outstanding!

K9 dog training here is absolutely wonderful. The owner is so knowledgeable and helpful while making the dog training user friendly. He is so much better in the home as well. Thank you very much for the quality training experience.

Kolby came back from training school a whole new dog. I am beyond impressed with his progress & how much he learned last week. There’s already so many major changes in his behavior. Both trainers are personable, knowledgeable & Kolby loved them! They’re great to work with! They make sure you understand everything & explain it very thoroughly. I have nothing but good things to say!! 10/10 recommend! I can’t wait to go on trails, hiking, parks, taking him out places and so much more now that he has learned off leash manners & leash manners. He’s always been a smart dog, but it is mind blowing how much he learned in a week!! Obviously, we still have more practice to do, but I look forward to all the new activities we can do together! If you’re looking for dog training I strongly recommend Purpose Driven K9!!!!!!

I have had 5 dogs trained at Purpose Driven K9 and I cannot say enough good things about them! From a very dog-reactive rescue Aussie to an easy going puppy who is now a therapy dog, all of my dogs received training to make them the best family pets they can be. My most recently adopted pup to be trained by Margaret was my most challenging. Fearful of new places and people, as well as being deaf, she is becoming more confident every day. I am so thankful I found PDK9 to help with my pack. My grandpups were trained there too!

We had an amazing experience with Murphy’s 4-week training program. Everything went great from start to finish, and the results have been incredible. Murphy is honestly a completely different dog—in the best way. His behavior, focus, and responsiveness have improved so much, and we feel much more confident handling him at home and in public. The training was thorough, consistent, and clearly tailored to his needs. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome and would highly recommend this program to anyone considering professional dog training.

My dog and I are so in love with Big n Small Paw’s newest groomer! I’ve been taking my dog to Rebekah (groomer) for over 2 years now! When she made the switch to Big n Small, I knew we had to follow her. She’s the only groomer that’s been able to make my dog comfortable enough to be groomer regularly. Rebekah has always been so nice and respectful to her clients and their pups! She sends me pictures of how my dog is doing during her appt too. It’s been refreshing taking my dog to someone who clearly loves and is so knowledgeable about dogs. I couldn’t recommend her more!

Although Louie isn’t our first dog, he is the first German Shepherd, so we wanted to make sure he got a solid training foundation as he will grow to be more than double the size of our other dog. Jerry didn’t just train Louie, but us too! He showed us how to continue this at home and make sure Louie stays «fluent» as he would say. We left every training session more confident each time that Louie was getting the best training, but more importantly the best love and care from all the workers. We highly recommend and will sure be coming back for more!

Bark Tutor did a fantastic job training our puppy and teaching us how to maintain his manners at home. Kayla was super patient and always took the time to answer all my questions. Madison did a great job teaching us how to work with our puppy at home. Wanxuan was so wonderful and gave our puppy lots of attention. Our puppy also loved it and was excited to go there every day! We took our American Corgi puppy to Bark Tutor for their three week puppy day training. Mochi absolutely loved going in and they were so wonderful with her. I was very happy with the ease of registration and looking at the report cards everyday in the portal was great. Even before we brought Mochi in they answered all of my questions and gave us advice. Madison was an amazing trainer and taught Mochi well. She was great at teaching us how to train and work with Mochi at home. Every day I took Mochi to «school» she was all wags and happy to go play with friends and work with Madison. You are given two exit lessons a week and Madison made sure to start by asking how things were going at home and addressed any concerns we had about Mochi’s behaviors. She’s a great advocate for all of the dogs and has their best interest in mind. We are very grateful to Bark Tutor and Madison for helping us learn.

Her trainer, Reagan, built trust with her right away and was very successful at teaching her commands such as, «stay», «leave it», «come» and «go to bed». Reagan and Kayla did a great job of teaching me commands as well as coming up with creative ideas on how to curb Moxie’s biting and digging tendencies. I plan to continue taking moxie back for Daycare there as I know she will be in good hands!

Winnie LOVED going to school (she would get so excited every morning!), and it was clear she was being cared for and challenged in all the right ways. I can’t recommend Bark Tutor and Reagan enough. It was such a positive, professional, and fun experience for both Winnie and I!

An animal behaviorist recommended the Bark Tutor. Bark Tutor’s trainer, Kayla, is a former zoo animal trainer. In three weeks, she took a puppy that didn’t pay attention and taught Arlo behavior to fit into our home. Kayla gave us the language to speak with our dog. She provided one-on-one lessons for us to work with our dog and, if needed, troubleshooting. Bark Tutor provides daily reports along with excellent how-tos and tips. Arlo was excited to go to school every day. Highly recommend!

We had a great experience with the 3 week school program! Our dog Tug was always so incredibly excited to come every morning and you could really tell all the staff really cared about each dog that came through. Kayla was incredible and left us feeling very prepared to continue the training at home. She tailored training to our goals, and even beyond our expectations. We were very impressed with his manners, even just in the first few days. The report cards and photos were also amazing! We loved seeing the daily updates, we look forward to bringing Tug back for the occasional daycare! Thank you!

Our one-year-old pug has so much «love» to give, but we noticed that he (and we) struggled to express his behavior appropriately. So we called the professionals! And we are so glad we did. From the initial call with Kylee, we knew Bark Tutor was right we’re Reggie needed to be! We enrolled him in the 3-week day training program and never looked back. We are so thankful for Reggie’s trainer, Mark. The Reggie we dropped off on day one and the Reggie we picked up on day 14 were sincerely two totally different dogs! Mark was incredibly patient and diligent with not only Reggie, but also with me and my husband, who I’m sure at times were more difficult to train than the dog. You can clearly see that he has a special gift! We were so impressed with Mark, and all of the other Bark Tutor staff that we encountered during drop-offs and pick-ups. We would recommend Bark Tutor to literally anyone. It was a fantastic investment! Reggie learned so much, made so many new friends, and had an absolute blast at Bark Tutor!!

Our puppy, Harry, just completed the four week puppy program. His teacher, Daisy was terrific. Her approach is calm and positive. He has learned many new skills. The parent puppy lesson at the end of the week was so helpful to know how to reinforce the skills taught throughout the week. I highly recommend this program. Thank you, Daisy.

Fetch is wonderful. They sincerely care about their «customer dogs» and treat my pup like their own. The puppy training was a great way to learn the ropes — for both of us. I have loved Daisy, the trainer. So knowledgeable and caring. I’m sad our four weeks are over but love that we can now transition to full time day care at same location. Thank you, Fetch!

We love Fetch! My older dog has gone to Fetch since he was 10 weeks old. All the workers love dogs, and I know my dogs are loved on when they are there. Recently, the owner has added enrichment activities for the dogs, and I can see how happy my dogs are to get the one on one attention. They have a new level of excitement when I tell them it is time to go to school. Highly recommend Fetch!

We have done both puppy camp and day camp for our dog. Kim and her team are communicative. They respond quickly and bring issues to our attention right away. Our dog had a minor medical scare while at camp; they notified us right away. Sent pictures. Communicated with both me and my partner. While he was driving to Fetch, Liam walked our pup to the ER Vet down the street to cut down on wait time for our dog to be seen rather than wait for my partner to do the transport. They do a great job of showing appreciation for customers and have monthly themes/photo shoots/activities that are adorable. My only wish is that they had dedicated and secured green space, but they walk the dogs regularly and our pup is nothing but WILD after days at Fetch.

The Fetch team is so helpful, caring and attentive. Our girl Pepper goes once a week for socialization and play and has also boarded at Fetch. I cannot stress how accessible they are with us as dog parents and loving they are with our Pepper. Their location is close to home, clean and easy to access. Hours are great. If on the rare occasion we need to call, they are responsive.

Fetch has been great for our puppy, Sonny. He goes in very excited and leaves very exhausted! The staff there all know him by name and seem to truly enjoy him and all of the dogs there. I highly recommend!

I got a service dog from medical mutts in 2021. The dog was completely not ready for working. He routinely pulled me down chasing animals and I sustained injuries. When I spoke with the trainers they said this was normal behavior. This should NOT be normal behavior for a service animal. I ultimately had to return the dog as I was not able to be injured further. I understand dogs have instincts but this dog was not ready for service work and when I made this known I was not provided many options.

I was looking into training my own dog to be my service dog. Getting responses from them is all but impossible. Once I sent in my videos, I had to contact them two different times to just get the application. I never heard back from them after that. I contacted them through email and they never responded. According to the other reviews, they do great work, but I can’t attest to that as I never got to work with them.

Medical.Mutts trained my service dog I received through them. During the 11 day training period of teaching me to work with her, they were VERY compassionate and caring; while working with me while having my medical issues happening there on site. They had Maisie trained very well and work with me learning all the cues with her. I’m so appreciative of them, the knowledge of the trainers, and the support of after taking her home for however long I need it. I also LOVE the fact that they rescue these lovely dogs from Shelter and Humane Society’s and give them a second chance at being outstanding dogs. If anyone is looking for a Service Dog I would undoubtedly send them here. Thanks to EVERYONE here, I have a Service Dog and best friend who is helping me in my journey of life. I can’t thank them ALL (each and everyone of them enough).

You should really check out their website. This non profit is doing amazing work. Pulling dogs from kill shelters and training them to be service animals. Win win. And the dogs that aren’t cut out to be service dogs become Career Change dogs and get adopted out to loving families.

Medical Mutts has created an excellent online program for training alert service dogs for diabetes and seizures. They also train dogs to help with psychiatric issues. Their ability to train the human is outstanding! They supply the information in a variety of formats. AND they use rescue dogs to be trained!

My mother drove nearly halfway across the country and paid a King’s ransom for a service dog. Only to get a half-trained dog that was still chasing around the «training cat» at their facility – which apparently the staff found humorous. It also behaves worse at home than most shelter animals that I come across. Taking advantage of desperate, disabled people is a whole new low.

I’ve been training here for 2 years. They are the best! I’ve worked with two different dogs and several different trainers. They all have been knowledgeable, patient, and professional. They have helped me tremendously with my girls.

The inquiry form on their wepage does not work. I tried to send an email with questions about obedience training and it bounced back. Their website is a bit difficult to navigate for some one new trying to get involved. I will try calling for more information.

Very nice facility for an agility trial weekend! Love the mezzanine and the ring action view it accords. Adequate crating spaces. All five-foot bars were used, which is important for dog safety and refusal minimization. State of the art contact obstacles. Good footing on artificial turf surface. Only drawbacks were two support pillars in the agility ring restricting handling on some courses, and inadequate parking on Friday causing double parking. Adequate parking was available Saturday and Sunday due to agreements with neighboring businesses. Ample greenspaces for dog walking. Close to freeway exit, motels, and restaurants. I’d definitely trial there again!

Couldn’t leave zero stars, very disappointing. Took our Blue Heeler puppy for obedience class and the instructor was horrible with puppies. Her expectations were not realistic with the short attention span of puppies and made sparky comments about our puppy both in a group email to the class and during the class even referring to him as the loud mouth. Sad to say this trainer has run us off. We had taken another dog there for training and had a different instructor which was amazing. But apparently they have lowered their quality of instructor and we will not be back.

Great place to train and develop your dog. The competitive obedience classes are informative and even though they are group classes, you get individual pointers throughout the session. I have already signed up for more classes with my dog!

If you are serious about agility, this is the place for you and your dog. The instructors are knowledgeable and can help you and your dog get to competition level. It’s a little bit of a wait getting started in class when you are first getting started, but it is totally worth the wait!

I am not sure about the training, I just know that the customer service is terrible at the place on Main St. We went in there to check it out, there was not a sign on the door or hours of obvious times of day they are open, however we did hear them grooming, so assumed they were open, especially since the door was unlocked. We waited patiently about 20 minutes and when they finally came to the front, the lady was very curt to us, so unfortunately we will not be using this company.

Frequently asked questions about pet trainers in Indianapolis

What types of training do Indianapolis pet trainers typically offer?

Indianapolis pet trainers provide a diverse range of training services, commonly including basic obedience training for dogs, encompassing commands like "sit," "stay," and "come." Many trainers also specialize in advanced obedience, focusing on more complex behaviors and greater control. Additionally, you’ll find options for puppy training, designed to establish good habits early on, and sport dog training, which includes disciplines such as agility and flyball.

How long does it typically take to complete a basic obedience course?

The duration of a basic obedience course varies depending on the dog’s individual learning pace and the trainer’s method. Generally, a course lasts between 8 and 12 weeks, with sessions typically held once or twice a week. Consistent training at home is crucial to reinforce the skills learned during the sessions. Early commitment is key to a successful outcome.

What methods do Indianapolis pet trainers use?

Indianapolis pet trainers utilize a variety of training methods, primarily focusing on positive reinforcement, which involves rewarding desired behaviors with treats, praise, or toys. While some trainers may utilize classical conditioning, a more traditional approach, modern training generally prioritizes a gentle and encouraging environment. It’s important to ask a trainer about their philosophy and training techniques before committing to their services.

What should I bring to a training session?

To a training session, you should bring your dog on a standard leash and collar or harness with identification tags. It's also beneficial to bring high-value treats – something your dog really enjoys – to motivate them during the session. A comfortable environment for your dog is vital, so bring a familiar toy if that helps them relax. The trainer will likely provide guidance on specific supplies.

Are there different training styles for different dog breeds?

Yes, training styles can be tailored to suit different dog breeds. Certain breeds, like herding dogs, may require a different approach than breeds known for independent thinking. Trainers often consider a dog’s breed characteristics and temperament when developing a customized training plan. A personalized approach is essential for optimal results.

What if my dog has behavioral issues like anxiety or aggression?

Dogs exhibiting behavioral issues such as anxiety or aggression require specialized training. Not all trainers are equipped to handle these challenges effectively. Look for trainers who have experience and certification in canine behavior modification and who utilize proven methods like desensitization and counter-conditioning. It’s crucial to work with a qualified professional to address these concerns safely and effectively.

How much does pet training cost in Indianapolis?

The cost of pet training in Indianapolis varies depending on the type of training, the trainer’s experience, and the length of the program. Basic obedience courses typically range from around $300 to $800, while advanced training and specialized programs can cost significantly more. It’s advisable to get multiple quotes and compare the value offered by different trainers before making a decision. Payment plans are often available.

What qualifications should I look for in an Indianapolis pet trainer?

When selecting a pet trainer, consider their qualifications and certifications. Many reputable trainers hold certifications from organizations like the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) or Karen Pryor Academy. Experience is also vital - ask about the trainer's background and training philosophy. A good trainer should be able to clearly explain their methods and demonstrate a genuine understanding of dog behavior.

How can I help my dog learn between training sessions?

Reinforcement at home is crucial for solidifying the skills learned in training sessions. Practice commands regularly in short sessions, using positive reinforcement. Create a training schedule and stick to it. Make training fun and engaging for your dog to maintain their motivation. Consistency is key to ensuring your dog’s continued progress.

What is the role of a trainer's assistant or helper?

Many trainers utilize assistants or helpers during sessions, particularly when working with multiple dogs. These assistants play a vital role in managing distractions, providing motivation, and assisting the trainer with administering rewards. Having an assistant can help ensure a more focused and productive training environment for both the dog and the trainer. Their presence contributes to enhanced learning.
