I had the opportunity to use a Senior Home Companions caregiver to help me care for my 98 yr old mom who was living with us. Senior Home Companion sent a wonderful caregiver that was attentive and kind, as well as reliable and prompt. It was a good reminder that having a caregiver allowed me to be her daughter and not her sole caregiver. I highly recommend Senior Home Companions if you have a companion care need for your loved one.

We are very happy with the organization and the surroundings and our residence. However, We are very disappointed with all of the things we were told we could do or have that we found out later we could not do or we could not have. As an example We understood That we
could put our Family light fixture in the entryway As opposed to the fixtures being offered on a chart and that it would be done By Hoosier Village. Now we are told that the fixture is ours and not yours and therefore we have to put it up or find someone else to do it. I’m not sure why hanging our lamp is so much more difficult than hanging your own, but this is the kind of nonsense we have been struggling with. Are we disappointed in the response not always but on the other hand much too often.

Hoosier Village is a wonderful community of fun and friendly folk – someone is always ready for a game of golf or a pickleball tournament. Although, sometimes, a cup of coffee and a book discussion is all I am looking for, and that too is just a phone call away.

My aunt lived there for 10 years and it was a great experience for her. We even held her funeral there. She started the red hat society when she first arrived and was buried in her red hat outfit. We recently moved my mom into her place at Sycamore Reserve. She absolutely loves it! We had looked at several places around the area and fell in love with this place when we toured it. The staff are amazing and Andrew was so welcoming and always got back with me immediately with any questions that we had before moving in. She loves all the different activities that are available from music on Fridays to joining the book club, to different outings that are available each week. She really enjoys the convenience of the dining hall in the building with both menu options and the special of the day. The food is delicious. She has enjoyed watching all the flowers being planted this spring and the pool out front getting ready to open this week. She is so happy to be at a place where she is making new friends and can sit and talk to different people about life experiences and be in the safety of the building. I am so glad that we found an independent living place for her that has staffing 24/7 on site. I love that she has to check in every morning so that they know she is ok. I love how engaged the entire staff is that they all knew her name from day one when she moved in.
Her apartment is brand new and absolutely beautiful. The bathroom and closet are set up so well for an aging person. The kitchenette is perfect as she can cook a little if she wants to, but seriously is enjoying not having to cook anymore! We are so happy she found the perfect place to enjoy her senior years.

A 2024 Update: We had four wonderful years at Sycamore Reserve Senior Living! Now we have moved to Muncie, IN where a daughter lives with us, and helps us. We are near our granddaughter and four great grandchildren. We are staying in touch with our friends and the staff at Sycamore. It was a great place to be. And, finally, when we began to look for a house to buy, Sycamore’s one month notice gave us the freedom to make a quick selection of a house without worrying about a long term lease. The staff were classy and helpful as we went through the move! Sycamore was our perfect place to be, and remains a great memory!

Original Reviews:

It seems like Sycamore Reserve was made just for us. I feel like I should thank my daughter every day for suggesting we might be happy here! We are!

A Follow Up: It’s Tuesday at Sycamore Reserve Senior Community. It’s a beautiful day in a very nice place.

Our home can be considered a Resort Lifestyle. For Barbara McNamara and me it is more a Retreat Lifestyle.

We have time to read, write, and reflect. There are several retired ministers living here, a retired Firefighter Chaplain, two fine pianists.

There are others with a wealth of life experience, including success in professions and business.

We enjoy conversations with people who have lived exceptional lives.

We have exercise classes, a heated salt-water pool, Chair Yoga, healthy food, a weekly Bible Study, and on-site Sunday Worship Services.

We also enjoy Happy Hour on Friday, we just had a 500 Race Party and are planning a KY Derby Party.

There are times and places for discussion and reflection. Living here helps us with the organization and integration of our lifetimes of experience and learning.

So is Sycamore Reserve a Resort or Retreat? The bottom line:

The management and staff here provide us with great choices each day to live the life that works for us that day.

We love having choices.

My parents have lived at beautiful Sycamore Reserve for two years. I am so thrilled that they found this lovely community! Sycamore Reserve is family owned and operated and it makes all the difference! They truly get to know their residents and even their extended families. They go out of their way to create a warm, caring, safe family atmosphere. Everyone always has a smile on their face and a kind thing to say. There has been very little staff turnover in the two years my parents have been there. The staff we met on the first day are all still there. My parents have made deep friendships and so have I. There are a variety of activities everyday and extended family members are welcome to participate too. My husband and I enjoy eating at Sycamore Reserve because the food is wonderful and varied. The exercise facilities and classes are engaging. We have had so much fun in the pool during the summers. I cannot say enough good things about this senior living community. I am so grateful that Mom and Dad call Sycamore Reserve home. Schedule a visit and you will understand.

Sycamore Reserve is excellent all of the way around. It is owned and operated by a family and they treat their residents and guests like family. I doubt you can find somewhere with a more personal feel. There is a community feel to relationships here. Residents sit in the common areas to play games, talk, and even have a sing-along. It is remarkable compared to other places that I am familiar with. Rooms are comfortable. All areas are clean. The dining room food is delicious and has good variety. I highly recommend it for your senior family member.

Food is available, on order, from 7 in the morning to 7 at night, and that food is just wonderful. Floor plans from a small studio to a large 2-bedroom and living room. I absolutely love what I have been able to witness here at the Avalon Senior Living facility. My experience began over a year ago while I visited my sister in law in Memory Care. In the 12 month period I’ve seen so many times when the team of employees and caregivers not only took wonderful first class care of residents, but went above and beyond to ensure that they were comfortable, safe, but treated with the utmost respect. I have also had the opportunity to interact and speak with many residents, family members and the very best employees in the Assisted Living community as well. I’ve been told over and over again how much they enjoy the stress free environment, kind and supportive employees and neighbors. They love to welcome new residents and help them adjust to their new environment and becoming friends and neighbors. I love how one beautiful lady put it … we try to help each other out and call the Avalon “The Village “

I highly recommend that you contact Peggy Bryson for more information and a guided tour of the Avalon

I cannot say enough great things about Avalon! It has been a life-altering experience for not only my mother but for me. From the start with a tour from Peggy to meeting the rest of the staff and moving in-it has all been a blessing. The food is fresh and delicious and the care has been extraordinary. The rooms are a great size and the whole building and amenities are top notch. I no longer have to worry about my mom’s care and wellbeing and a huge worry has been lifted from me. I have actually moved my mom from 2 other facilities because of poor care and lack of leadership and I have very high standards about where my mom resides. Avalon has gone above and beyond my expectations. Contact Peggy at Avalon to do a tour and secure a residence before they become full.

My 95 yo mother was a resident in Avalon’s Memory Care Unit from February 19, 2025 until April 26, 2025. The building is fairly new and the private room was nice due to her need for oxygen. She had no means to contact staff when she needed assistance as her call light did not alarm within the Memory Care or Assisted Living nurse station. I tested the call light multiple times with waits of 2-3 hours occurring with no response.

I ultimately had to visit nightly for hours after dinner to ensure my mom got her bedtime meds at 8 pm (not 4.30 pm by the day aide). I also needed to give her bedtime hygiene including a shower, provide a snack from home, and ensure lights/TV would turn off for sleep time.

We used a Canary camera in her room to communicate with her (worked similar to a walkie-talkie) and observed staff could not hear her calling for help nor did they do routine rounds to check on her during day hours. Certain overnight staff were more attentive. Mom needed assistance to leave her room because of her oxygen. In the end, my sister and I were providing hours of care and activity to her daily as the staff usually only took her to meals.

The main activities, for the unit residents, were watching old TV shows in the living room, constructing puzzles, coloring and eating a snack. Due to mom’s arthritis, poor vision and need to have her feet elevated, she was not able to participate in those few activities. Perhaps weekly there was BINGO and on Friday a Happy Hour with music she could attend. A new activity director/LPN director was hired for Memory Care but in the three weeks she was there with us, we saw no change in activities or care. Basics like providing hand washing prior to meals or assisting with feeding (plate just put in front of her) did not occur. Ten days after placing mom at Avalon she got a GI infection lasting two weeks (per the aides every resident in the entire building got it). She also took a bad fall during the night that we saw on the camera recording several hours later, as the staff did not notify us or hospice. I took care of my mom’s fall injuries including having staff give her a Tylenol and calling the hospice nurse for evaluation of her many bruises, cuts and complaints of discomfort. We brought her home as she was not getting the care that had been promised, and she was isolated in her room most of the day and night.

My mom needed to go to assisted living and this place just magically popped up. Friends of hers did their homework and decided they were moving there. This place opened in FEB2024 and when Mom needed somewhere to go, they still had immediate occupancy available.

First of all the only category Mom and I had for these places was when my Grandpa was in a nursing home for 10 years and we would go visit him. It was almost like a haunted house. People were moaning everywhere. People sitting out in the hall in their wheelchairs would try to grab you when you walked by, crying about how they wanted to go home.

So let me be TOTALLY CLEAR: Avalon is NOTHING like that. In fact it’s the exact opposite. Let me start with the amenities: workout room, physical therapy area, theatre, chapel, games room, pub, huge dining hall, sitting rooms on every floor, laundry room, balconies with lights and ceiling fans, beautiful 600 sq ft apartments – and I’m sure I missed some.

(Oh! My mom’s apartment overlooks a horse farm! Also, the food is very good: generous portions, well-balanced offerings, good nutrition, and everyone likes it.)

After I heard about the place, I called and grilled the director. It was one of those magic conversations where we just totally resonated. She even answered the questions I had BEHIND the original questions.

And the residents are happy to be there. The director told me it takes about 30 days for each new person to fully adjust, but everyone I met was enjoying themselves. The staff work hard to not only engage everyone but help them find purpose. Activities include euchre night, walking club, happy hour, bible study and more – and a lot of those are initiated by the residents! In fact there is a Resident Council meeting once a month where everyone is welcome. They discuss how things are going, what could be improved, and so forth. I’ve never heard of that!

The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and they really seem to enjoy working there. I’m very impressed and highly recommend.

Amazing facility and staff! My uncle’s assisted living apartment is spacious and beautiful (walk in closet, huge pantry, bedroom big enough for his king size bedroom suite). I’ve eaten meals with him and their chef is amazing! The executive director and director of nursing have both went above and beyond to make sure all of our questions were answered and that my uncle is safe and comfortable. It’s so nice to have an option for our aging relatives that is right in our neighborhood and has so many wonderful amenities to make the transition from home easier on us all. Thank you Avalon!

Working at West Bend has been one of the most rewarding nursing experiences of my 20+ career. Are there challenges and bad days? YES! Is staffing sometimes very challenging? YES! But, these are the same concerns and problems at every LTC facility. What is different at West Bend is the support from both floor staff and other managers (both nursing and non nursing). No staff in dietary today? NO PROBLEM! The nurse managers will sign up to do a few hours to cover it! I have never felt more supported and appreciated in any other nursing role (except maybe hospice). When a teammate looks overwhelmed, stressed ,etc it is the norm that someone talks to them and comes up with a plan to help . ASC has displayed it’s appreciation and support to it ‘s staff by continually reviewing salaries in areas and adjusting accordingly AND rolling out the new PTO enhancment (extra $ or extra time off)!! We help and support each and every team member without exception. New staff and agency staff typically comment on how “helpul and nice” we are compared to some of their past experiences. We have fun. We have dress up weeks. And all of that leads to BETTER PATIENT CARE AND BETTER RESIDENT OUTCOMES! And our team is vigilant about resident care. It is why we do what we do.

I had never worked in health care and was very nervous about what I was about to do! I started at West Bend as a Nurse aide in training in February 2022 and ASC paid for my classes! Didn’t even have to sign a “contract to stay”. That’s probably because once you work here, you really have no reason or desire to go anywhere else. The classroom and clinical training was top notch. My instructor and floor preceptor did an excellent job of training me and making sue that I felt comfortable and that I could provide safe care. I was very prepared and passed state testing with no issues. The nurse managers, floor nurses and other aides are great! My managers want to hear my ideas and they ask all of us for our input when we need to problem solve or make changes. They are willing to do any job/task to help and I feel like they truly listen to us. The best part of my job is the relationships that I have made with all of the resident’s. I know that providing the best care possible makes them feel happy and loved. They all deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion….especially considering for most this is the last chapter of their life. They are no longer living in their home, they don’t have the same choices and control they once had, they may have memory impairments that make it frustrating or impossible to understand any of it and that is just sad. I feel it is my job to make this last chapter as happy and healthy as possible…and they can tell…they ask where I am when it’s my day off!! There is nothing more rewarding than being able to provide care and comfort to my residents.

I’ve been working for ASC for close to 6 months now, and having been in senior care for over a decade, I could see how different ASC is from other long-term care/senior care/skilled nursing facilities. They truly care about their residents and treat them like family. I have also become good friends with several of my coworkers and it makes coming to work that much more enjoyable. Pay is very competitive and there are a lot of other perks and benefits too! I would recommend a job here (or bringing your family here) to anyone!

These used to be good apartments. I’m about to move my mother to a better place. These apartments used to be income based(they still claim to be) my mother’s rent is nearly $500, the laundry room is terrible with washer that cost $2.00 and dryers that cost $1:50 and seldom work. There are constant changes with the management and constant issues with the plumbing. I wish the church that used to own this building would not have given control to whatever company that owns it now. People are moving out almost monthly now.

Jennifer Herberr

There have been so many great changes with leadership and staff. I know on the rehab side there have been such great success stories over the last 2 months. Seems the reviews in the past weren’t the best but very proud of how much work they have put in to make it a great place for family members, residents, and staff during their stay.

my parents moved into Robin Run in 2017. since then, the quality of the care and the food has gradually gone downhill. the food is usually cold and rarely what was ordered, making a mockery of the menu’s residents fill out. a single person is supposed to be cleaning 2 floors of assissted living apartments regularly, leaving bathroom facilities and kitchen areas untouched.

My parents are here. Regarding the nursing home, please stay on top of things. Although they were negligent and my father received a 3rd-degree burn, they quickly rectified the problem and notified the State.

Outside of that incident, they treat my father well.

Should the facility hire more help? Yes

Judy Kennedy

Generally I would leave a positive review but I more than agree with other reviews left here. My concern started with the aesthetics of the place. The bathrooms as a visitor were filthy, they were in the mist of replacing wallpaper that I’m certain had black mold under it. The nurses when asked a question acted put out – as if we were bothering them when asking about my brothers care. While he was there he developed an infection which can be detrimental to a diabetic. He didn’t feel ‘right’ and asked to go to the hospital- they refused. The rehab facility had a great reputation YEARS ago, but I would caution any one looking to receive care there.
Less than one star review- wishing the could be and should be turned in to the Health Dept.

Not happy with having a grounds person steal large rocks from around my patio so he could use them to rebuild my neighbor’s terracing. He secretly came back later when I got furious when no one would admit their guilt and replaced most of the stones. No apologies, no excuses.

If I could rate this facility a 0 is what it deserves. So disappointing how the healthcare(rehab) has gone down. I chose this facility for my mom rehab based on old(very old) experience which I should have done my research because had I done it she would not have been there. She was without heat for a week, staff made promises to get it fixed only worked for a few days. They did not attend to her as it was part of her care plan. They allowed her to lay in bed 24/7 which caused health issues which resulted back to hosp stay. They allowed her room did not get cleaned only emptied trash. I had to clean and sweep myself. The icing on the cake was she could not feed herself due to issues she was having with her hands and fingers so she basically was not eating. This isn’t half the issues she experienced during her stay. All these issues and more were addressed to the care team during our meeting and made promises to fix them. None were fixed. This facility was very disappointing and for those reasons I removed my mom to a much better facility. I would definitely not recommend this facility.

Legal consultations and elder law guidance

In Indianapolis, civil attorneys specializing in elder law provide comprehensive legal consultations and elder law guidance. These services cover assessing eligibility for public benefits, explaining rights under Indiana law, and outlining strategies to protect assets, ensure care continuity, and plan for future incapacity. Key tools include durable powers of attorney, advance directives, and clear documentation of guardianship preferences, all tailored to individual circumstances.

Estate planning: wills, trusts, and powers of attorney

Estate planning in Indiana involves designing a plan that includes wills and trusts, healthcare directives, and powers of attorney. Civil attorneys can help draft or update documents to reflect wishes, coordinate distributions to heirs, minimize probate complexity, and implement trust-based plans that may offer tax efficiency and probate avoidance when possible.

    Guardianship and conservatorship proceedings

Guardianship and conservatorship proceedings in Indiana require careful navigation of court procedures and protecting vulnerable adults. Civil attorneys prepare petitions, gather evidence of incapacity, coordinate with professionals, and advocate for the least restrictive guardianship while safeguarding rights of the individual and their family.

    Probate and estate administration

Probate and estate administration services cover identifying assets, paying debts, and distributing property with respect to probate and estate administration requirements under Indiana law. Elder abuse, fraud, and consumer protection services address financial exploitation and other abusive practices toward seniors. Civil attorneys help victims report suspected abuse, pursue remedies under state and federal protections, and seek compensation through civil actions or protective orders, while coordinating with law enforcement and social services in Indianapolis and surrounding counties.

Long-term care planning and Medicaid planning

Long-term care planning and Medicaid planning focus on matching care needs with available funding. Attorneys advise on Medicaid eligibility, spend-down strategies, and compliant arrangements that protect assets, preserve eligibility for assistance programs, and facilitate access to appropriate long-term care services, including in-home and facility-based care.

Housing, real estate, and tenancy matters for seniors

Housing, real estate, and tenancy matters for seniors encompass reverse mortgage considerations, property disputes, and landlord-tenant issues that arise in retirement communities or rental homes. Trust administration and fiduciary duties

Trust administration involves fiduciary duties, ongoing management of trust assets, and distribution according to the trust terms. Civil attorneys assist trustees with trust disputes, beneficiary communications, and compliance with Indiana reporting requirements, helping to ensure that the trust fulfills its purpose while avoiding conflicts among heirs.

Frequently asked questions about senior groups in Indianapolis

What types of senior groups are commonly found in Indianapolis?

In Indianapolis, senior groups cover a wide range of interests. Social clubs, fitness classes, arts and culture groups, volunteer organizations, and travel clubs are all common. Many groups are organized by city departments, libraries, or community centers, making them accessible in various neighborhoods. It helps to consider your interests and desired pace when exploring options to find the best fit.

Who can join senior groups in Indianapolis?

Most groups welcome adults aged 55 and older, though some programs focus on specific life stages or eligibility criteria. Eligibility is typically open to residents and often to caregivers or allies who share the group’s interests. Some groups require registration, basic health or mobility considerations, or modest membership dues. If you have accessibility concerns, contact the group coordinator for accommodations.

How can I locate senior groups in Indianapolis?

Begin with the City of Indianapolis Parks and Recreation listings, public libraries, and senior centers. Local nonprofits and faith-based organizations also run programs for seniors. Online directories and social media can help you discover weekly events and monthly outings. Asking neighbors, healthcare providers, or faith community members can be a valuable source as well.

Are there costs to participate in senior groups?

Costs vary from free programs to modest membership fees or donations. Some groups offer scholarships or waivers for those with limited finances. Transportation and activity fees may apply separately. Always confirm the current cost structure before joining a group to avoid surprises.

What activities do senior groups typically offer?

Typical activities include fitness classes like walking clubs, arts and crafts, book clubs, technology tutoring, and outdoor excursions. Many groups organize volunteer projects, wellness workshops, and cultural events. Regular meetings provide ongoing social interaction and opportunities to plan new activities.

How do I join a senior group and what should I expect at a first meeting?

Registration is usually straightforward through an online form or in person at a center. At the first meeting, expect an orientation, a brief introduction, and a summary of upcoming activities. Bring a photo ID if required and note any accessibility needs. You may be asked to share your interests so the group can tailor activities to members.

    What about transportation and accessibility?

Options include public transit, group rides, and volunteer driver programs. Many centers are designed for Accessibility with ramps, elevators, and seating. If mobility is a concern, ask about remote participation options, such as online sessions or recorded events, to stay involved without travel.

Are senior groups in Indianapolis safe and well managed?

Responsible groups follow clear codes of conduct, maintain privacy policies, and comply with local regulations. Reputable organizations have trained staff or volunteers who oversee activities and safety. If you observe unsafe practices, report them to the group leader or appropriate local authorities.

Can senior groups help with social isolation and mental health?

If someone experiences persistent loneliness or mood changes, consider discussing with a healthcare professional alongside group participation.

What should I consider when choosing a group to join?

Consider alignment with your interests, schedule, and location. Look at the group size, level of social interaction, and the reputation within the community. Attending a trial meeting can help you assess compatibility and whether the group offers the types of activities you want.
