Post Road and E. Washington St.! This is the best karma store I’ve ever been to. They’re so organized and clean. The employees are absolutely wonderful! If they don’t have what you need in store, they’re always more than happy to help you get it even if it needs to be ordered.

Best record store in Indianapolis. If you love music you will love Karma Records. The Karma Records crew are welcoming and friendly. I’ve been going there for 25+ years since I was a kid and never had a bad experience. Everyone there is always great and helpful. If they don’t have what you’re looking for they will help you find it or order it for you. Also, this is the best place to go for the Record Store Days. They have all the best exclusive releases for Record Store Day and Black Friday Record Store Day. Support your local record stores and add some music to your day from either of the Karma Records Indianapolis locations.

Indy CD and Vinyl at IN State Fair 2025. Although a sampling of their full retail store stock, has to be the most comprehensive and popular artist selection I’ve seen in decades, including shops near larger metro area such as Atlanta, GA. Many represses in new wrappers. I definitely need to visit their Broad Ripple shop which they said is in close proximity to one of my old vinyl haunts, Praches Records, fortunately they say located there will knowledge of that store’s owner in the day!

I would like to say they sponsored and/or owned the Fair vinyl exhibit memorabilia which was exhilarating and refreshing. The highlight aside from the fair concert that night!

I can’t recommend Indy CD & Vinyl enough. My kiddo and I were visiting the area, and they were so helpful and awesome. They went above and beyond to answer every single question we had, came up to us and offered help, looked stuff up for us, went in the back and found a sticker and a pin for my kid (because they felt bad they didn’t have a particular CD he was looking for), and more. Just truly awesome and friendly. They also offered to ship anything to us that they didn’t have in stock. There was a nice collection of K-Pop albums they were starting too. They even informed us of a new vinyl shop that opened up where we lived (we didn’t even know about it), and then proceeded to look up the name and address for us without even being asked. The atmosphere was great, and you could tell everyone there was knowledgeable and enjoyed what they do. Please stop by and visit them if you’re ever in the area! We’ll definitely be back.

What an awesome shop. Best in Indy. Great owners and they really care about the local music scene. Whenever I wear my Indy CD and Vinyl t-shirt people comment how cool it is. Someone even said that they’ve bought a bunch of records from their Discogs. Amazing record selection and it is always stocked with cool stuff.

Long time patron. It’s always well organized. I always manage to find exactly what I want. Several years ago I went to a release party with my (then) almost teenager and they gave us a signed poster and were so kind and attentive to them. And now they love to skateboard there. A local business who *truly* cares about the community and their patrons…doesn’t get better than that. Thanks, Annie and all!

I love this place. I go here every Friday evening to browse and pick up a game. Store is always clean, staff is nice, and they always have super cool stuff.

They always have rare and hard to find games. Systems, collectors editions, steel books, etc. NES-modern systems, they have it all. Their switch selections is absolutely massive as well. Easily 200+ titles.

Highly recommend.

If I had to give one criticism, it would be that their prices can be on the higher end. Not crazy high or anything, but they are generally a few dollars more than other places.

Buying dvds is thrilling, I don’t make the rules.

We need to bring back DVD rentals. Subscriptions are insanely expensive, you need like 5-8 different services, and for what? To watch 4 movies a month? Go to your nearest movie store with your pal or date or family. Pick a movie (for $3!!!). Grab snacks. Make it a night. End of story.

My dad and I were looking for a console for my brother’s birthday. We stopped at one store in Castleton Mall and the worker recommended ‘The Exchange’. We walked into a HUGE, clean store with a selection of everything you could need including Nintendo 64s, Wii’s, DS consoles, various system controllers, games, vinyls, posters, etc. We were automatically greeted upon entering before we asked an associate for help. Not only were we given good/relevant information, but an associate physically walked us over to what we were looking for. He explained what all we would need, how the system worked, and was very knowledgeable on the other questions we had. We went up the counter and Blake assisted us. He was very thorough in making sure he explained the exchange policy, how to work the system, and what all came with it. We ended up leaving with a Nintendo 64 console (which came with a controller and cords), 2 games (Donkey Kong 64 and Pokemon Stadium), and an extra controller. Blake got us signed up for rewards (free) and gave us a discount that saved us $50+. The associates were SO knowledgeable (it blew my mind how much these guys knew off the top of their head) and very kind!!! The prices were VERY reasonable and overall we had such an incredible experience. We left the store feeling a HUGE weight lifted off our shoulders because we genuinely had no clue what we needed, but everyone took such great care of us. After my brother’s birthday, we are 100% bringing him back so he can shop around too! You guys are SO awesome and thank you for all your help 🙂 Shoutout Blake!

ARI K PRODUCTION (Arian Khoroushi)

I recently utilized the rental department at Guitar Center for a sound system reservation, and while there were a few hiccups, the exceptional service provided by Ryan and Madison ultimately made for a positive experience.

Upon arrival, there was a bit of a wait, but Ryan, one of the managers, went above and beyond to assist me with my rentals. His professionalism and knowledge were evident as he helped me select the right equipment for my needs.

Unfortunately, one of the stands I rented was broken, which was a bit disappointing. However, I appreciated having brought along an extra pair of stands as backup. While it would have been preferable for the staff to have checked the equipment thoroughly before renting it out, I understand that oversights can happen.

When I returned the rentals, Ryan and Madison were both incredibly helpful and apologetic about the condition of the stand. Their genuine concern and willingness to make things right were greatly appreciated and left a positive impression.

Overall, despite the minor issue with the stand, I was impressed by the level of customer service provided by the rental department at Guitar Center. Ryan and Madison’s professionalism and commitment to customer satisfaction ensured that I would not hesitate to return for future rental needs.

I don’t usually leave reviews, but I had to give some props to this store and especially to Matt. It was pretty busy when I came in, but he was super friendly and welcoming to everyone. Even though he was helping a bunch of people, I never felt ignored or rushed. He helped me find exactly what I needed and made everything quick and easy. I’ve been to a lot of GC stores around the country and worked with several associates, and Matt is hands down one of the best I’ve come across.

Recently stopped at Guitar Center in Castleton to purchase some guitar strings for my son and added yet another great shopping experience there. In addition to excellent customer service, they are making some changes to the guitar wall and it’s looking really nice! Matt, who was both professional and personable, went above and beyond providing a lot of information and answering my many questions. I also spoke with the manager, Alex, who was really helpful too. He even stopped in the middle of something else he was working on to come speak with me. I really appreciate you guys!

I like to kill time by visiting guitar centers or music stores in the areas I’m working. The staff here is great. Mat has helped me a hundred times. Great find! Well-laid-out. Even $3 used records were very clean…the 6-8 I checked out. Cool environment… can’t wait to try the coffee in their coffee bar. Also got a good kick out of the two baskets of stickers available for purchase…all refreshingly priced at 99¢ each!!! (The whole $2-$5 for a sticker is just capitalism at its nadir.) Way to go, Square Cat! I look forward to returning.

When I was being checked out at the store i was tricked into signing up for a paid monthly subscription membership while being under the impression that I was simply giving them an email and phone number just to receive 10% off. many other stores ask for this to simply send you promotional emails, give you a one time discount, or make returning something to the store easier. I was not told I would be signing myself up for this paid subscription. Do not give them any of your information as it signs you up to pay them $13 a month and they save your debit or credit card information for this. Upon further research on this they make it very hard to cancel this membership and many people have reported this company to the FTC for this. Not okay.

It’s ok. Need to do away with membership. Employees pressure customers. Even when they say no, thank you. They still try to get you to sign up. So sad!! They did it to me 1x time before. Know I have to call and cancel again. They automatically take cash out of your accounts. Every month of around 11 dollars. Not good business. Employees miss telling me 2x times. My boyfriend reminded me that I did sign up for it 1x before. I cancle it due to this problem. I didn’t receive anything through mail from them. Explain this, nor did they say nothing about it coming out of account. What ever card you use. They take from that account.

The store itself has a lot of cool stuff, but it’s really overpriced, especially the Asian snacks. You can get them for half the price at any Asian market in town.

When I checked out, the sales associate signed me up for their membership program which I assumed was free, and didn’t realize was $12 a month until he tried to get me to sign an agreement on the credit machine. He talked about the whole thing like it was free and never once mentioned a cost or a free trial until I asked when I saw a charge on the agreement.

I know sales associates get credit for signing people up for email and the store rewards and things like that, so I always do it if it’s free and unsubscribe later, but I’ve never had someone so purposely misrepresent a paid subscription. It was very predatory and I know a cost would not have been mentioned if I had not asked.

At that point, I had been at this register way too long for my small purchase, so I agreed after he showed me how easy it was to cancel online. But then when I went to cancel online, there was a persistent error and I had to call in. And when I called in, the customer service associate gave me a whole long sales pitch and then says “So I’ll keep your membership active.” No! She finally canceled but I wouldn’t be shocked if I still get charged. Their whole VIP program is super predatory and difficult to cancel. If you choose to shop here, do not sign up for anything.

The staff are always nice and very helpful. The instrument rental process is easy. We did everything over the phone. I was unsure if I would be approved to rent an instrument because of my credit, but Musicians Repair and Sales approved me! They will work with you to get your student an instrument. Highly recommended.

My family has been renting/buying/repairing from Dan and his team for two years. They have always been so flexible, accommodating, and knowledgeable. This week, they stepped up big time with a last minute rescue on a sizing error of mine with my kid’s cello. The communication from them has always been excellent. My impression is that they are committed to instilling an appreciation for music in young people. I love the community feel here and look forward to many more years of working with them.

Been to Arthur’s a number of times with my husband. I always appreciated the bench right inside the door when I could sit and read or crochet.

This time, however, I was the customer looking to purchase my first ukulele. Emily took all the time in the world with me, answering my 300 questions. I could not have dreamed up a better experience. Thank you!

If you don’t like what you do, don’t do it you ain’t gotta be hateful to everybody else wont be back ever again! Try Smiling I’m not being such a Karen

How did I not know about this place? They have a very wide range of stringed instruments. I found a mandola, a bouzouki, a selection of dulcimer, and a bunch of other cool stuff. They also stock instruments at a range of prices. If you are on a budget, you’ll have lots of options.

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I brought in a guitar I made, just to see what they thought. They gave me some good comments and really spent time with me. I was also looking at mandolins. The lady I talked with was most helpful.

I’m definitely coming back. If you like stringed instruments, check this place out.

I love going in here. They are always so nice and clean and they had a really rare find last time I went which I made a good trade for my boyfriend’s birthday surprise. I have been looking for this specific guitar for years and finally found it here. They also went out of their way to make sure I got everything I needed to go alone with the instrument to ensure he could try out my gift right away without needing to make any extra trips. Thanks for all the great help.

Flew down from New England on business and needed a tuner on the spot. Paul Beeman was knowledgeable and answered all my questions. The songs I was working on were tuned weird and I brought the wrong tuner with me. I told him I didn’t want to break the bank and that I had what I needed back home. He took the time and dug around a bit and found me a used On-Stage GTP7000. He even helped out on an open box power adapter for it. There was no pushy salesman upselling. He even demo’d it for me.
Great experience all around. Tons of stuff there new and gently used.
I highly recommend this location if you’re in the area for all your music needs.
Thanks again Paul for all the help.
Good Luck!

Staff was friendly, but I gave them my number twice about a certain used bass and I was never called even after a reminder after the first no-call. They also close a lot for seemingly minor reasons, so I’ve had trouble planning on the store being open. Still, a good selection of used gear so it’s a nice place to browse.

This is the review you’re looking for if you’re curious

1. Should I get my important instrument repaired here? YES
2. Could they have the gear I want but used at a better value? YES
3. Is the little thing I need TODAY actually in stock? YES

A few weeks ago, I had to drop off my banjo that was poorly repaired by a downtown shop. I was a professional touring guitar player for 10 years on the road so I have unfairly high expectations. When Paul checked in my dobro and banjo I was floored that he made sure EVERY SINGLE DETAIL was accurate.

Insane variety of electric guitars, amps and drums. Most pedals in Indy at best prices. Even if you’re a deal digger??? I literally found the exact $50 dobro slide I’d almost bought used for about $15 ‍♂️

If you’re coming around the corner in Castleton to go to GC. You should be going here first, zero question.

Frequently asked questions about music stores in Indianapolis

What types of instruments are commonly sold in Indianapolis music stores?

Indianapolis music stores typically carry a broad selection of instruments for players at every level. Common categories include guitars, basses, drums and percussion, pianos and keyboards, wind instruments (such as saxophones and flutes), brass (trumpets, trombones), and strings (violas, violins, cellos). In addition, shops frequently stock audio gear like amplifiers, microphones, cables, and headphones. Many stores also offer starter bundles and rental programs for beginners or students.

Do music stores in Indianapolis offer repair and maintenance services?

Yes, many stores provide on-site instrument repair and routine maintenance, including tuning, setup, and cleaning. Some shops have in-house technicians for guitars, brass, and woodwinds, while others partner with trusted local repair professionals. It’s common to receive a written estimate before any work begins, so you know the expected cost and timeline.

How can I find a good music store in Indianapolis?

To locate a reputable store, start by asking fellow musicians for recommendations, and read reviews from other customers. Compare stores based on the selection, pricing, customer service, and warranty policies. Visiting a few shops to try instruments and talk with staff can reveal which store offers the best guidance and support for your goals. Checking for staff with genuine experience in the types of music you play is also helpful.

Do music stores in Indianapolis offer lessons or workshops?

Many stores provide music lessons or host workshops and clinics led by experienced instructors. Programs often cover beginner to advanced topics, including instrument technique, music theory, and recording basics. Some locations include practice rooms or schedule regular student ensembles or jams. It’s a good idea to ask about pricing, schedule, and whether lessons can be tailored to your genre and goals.

What brands are commonly carried by music stores in Indianapolis?

Stores in the area typically stock a mix of well-known brands across categories. Expect to see guitars and basses from Fender and Gibson, acoustics from Taylor and Martin, keyboards from Yamaha and Korg, and digital pianos from Roland or Casio. For drums and percussion, look for Ludwig, Pearl, and DW, while amplification and audio gear may feature Marshall, Vox, Shure, and Neumann. Availability varies by shop, so it’s worth calling ahead if you’re looking for a specific brand.

What should I bring when shopping for an instrument?

When shopping, helpful items to bring include your budget, a list of preferred genres, and any reference models you’ve seen online. If you’re considering a trade-in or financing, bring relevant identification and documentation. It’s also wise to bring a basic sense of your playability needs (comfort, action, and tone) so staff can tailor recommendations to you. Finally, consider bringing a friend or mentor for a second opinion during trials.

Do stores buy or trade used instruments?

Many Indianapolis music stores accept used instruments for trade-ins or consignments. Some offer on-site appraisals to determine fair value, while others may require a basic condition assessment before agreeing to purchase. If you plan a trade-in, ask about discounts on new gear, warranty transfers, and any return policies that apply to used items.

What are typical price ranges and financing options?

Prices vary by instrument type, brand, and condition. Entry-level guitars or ukuleles often start at modest price points, while beginner pianos or keyboards may range higher. Mid-range gear commonly falls in the hundreds to low thousands of dollars, with pro-grade instruments and gear exceeding that range. Many stores offer financing or layaway options, and occasional used gear discounts can provide additional savings. It’s wise to ask for a clear price quote and any promotion terms before purchasing.

How can I verify warranty and return policies?

Before buying, check the warranty terms, including duration, coverage, and transferability. Ask about the return window and whether returns require the instrument to be in original condition and accompanied by receipts. Some stores offer extended warranties or equipment protection plans for an additional fee. Keeping a copy of your purchase receipt and the serial number is essential for any future service needs.

Are there any local programs or partnerships that affect shopping?

Indianapolis shops often collaborate with local schools, community programs, and music clubs to support performers and students. These partnerships can include donation drives, instrument lending, or educational events at stores. Checking with a store about school partnerships or community classes can reveal opportunities to learn and grow within the local music community.
