Ed Franklin

Mark Smith and Family Tree Counseling were instrumental in helping me find “me” again. We all go through things in life! Family Tree’s videos, men’s support groups, and Mark’s counseling were exceptional in helping me gain the perspective and strength I needed to start my rebound and recovery. Especially important was Mark’s ability to relate (given his experiences) and ability to recommend good resources for me. Mark’s insights for me were focused and specific — it was counseling that I could relate to, use, and act upon. I felt that he listened and crafted a solid plan for me. Family Tree Counseling provided the “shade” I needed to rest and recoup from the bright sun called “life”. I would definitely recommend them for those who are in need.

I was referred to Mark by friends in 2010 for couples counseling. Worked with him for a year. Moved to Texas and found him again in 2017 on YouTube. Working with Mark Smith, I have gained more self-awareness and have developed compassion for myself. I have done tremendous healing from childhood wounds. I have discovered through counseling how my family of origins influences me today. I have been able to make changes for myself and for the future of my children by working with Mark. I divorced in 2019 and through counseling have learned, I am not a victim. I am so grateful for Mark. I am grateful to his commitment to his profession. I am grateful for his compassion and I am grateful for his teaching on YouTube. I am thankful for his authenticity.

Family Tree Counseling Associates have been and continue to be an invaluable source of support for me, in terms of my recovery journey. They are professional, insightful, knowledgeable and most of all incredibly caring about their clients. Without Family Tree Counseling Associates, I would have struggled to make sense of my emotional well being, the abusive relationship patterns I was enmeshed in and my past childhood issues. Their online videos often tackle sensitive issues that affect so many people and they always offer supportive strategies to deal with them. I am forever grateful to this wonderful service and would urge anyone requiring therapy, or support to work with them and to access their thought provoking online videos.

Family Tree Counseling, and Mark Smith specifically, are a tremendous source of inspiration and support for me. Within my very first visits I told Mark that I was “happily overwhelmed” with the many resources, options for therapy approaches and kindness that I immediately experienced. Mark truly and unfortunately “gets” the trauma of dealing with disordered and narcissistic people, so his help and healing come from the heart. The office space is warm and inviting, and one of my favorite keys to calm during visits is spending time with Mark’s therapy beagle and companion animal Mr. Pauly! I love that little dog, a beagle who is part of my therapy team. Please visit Family Tree Counseling videos online on YouTube, which is how I found this remarkable group. Never give up – you are worth the battle and Family Tree will help you heal.

I have been receiving treatment from mark smith for a few months now, and instantly the difference between uk therapy and his is abundantly obvious. Not only due to his knowledge of complex trauma, but his ability to relate as a human being whilst still maintaining professional boundaries has been very refreshing.
I still have some work to do, but i feel the balance of empathy and direct learning is well established. I always come away with great advice on homework and what i should be reading, with the expectation that i should be working for myself as well as the weekly session i receive.
So glad i found him!

Mark met with me and my husband at a time when it was either therapy or divorce for us. Through a period of 6 months, he helped us to not only save our marriage and get us into a healthier relationship, but to work on our own deep childhood traumas. It’s been really exhausting to work on issues that ran through so deeply into the core of our beings, but Mark really created the space for us to process and heal. Be prepared to do some deep personal searching and healing with Mark! He is for those who have the time and energy to do your “homework” and bring issues and discussion topics to each session. Thanks Mark for all that you do.

Edward Anania

If you are fortunate enough to recognize the need for help at the cross-roads of a personal or relationship crisis, take advantage of the opportunity to review the material on the Family Tree website. Mark and Family Tree heavily invest in providing access to useful introductory material providing a starting point in the rewarding journey of recovery from the inevitable wounds everyone encounters at some point.

Exploring the introductory material and reading books are only part of the process involved in finding the path of recovery and only the beginning of the process. Knowing there is a path to recovery, finding the path to recovery, and staying on the path to recovery are all required, but truly separate processes in pursuit of healing, recovery, and growth. Meaningful and sustainable progress requires an experienced and skilled guide. Invest in yourself and your relationships by exploring the material in the website and find the guide who best fits with you and your needs. One size does not fit all.

The best opportunity for sustained recovery requires commitment to the methodical process and there are no short-cuts. I was frustrated, had doubts, and wondered if I was too broken to have the relationships I wanted and become the father, husband, and friend I knew I wanted to become.

I remained committed. Mark provided honest, sometimes brutal but needed input, and ultimately I was able to locate the path to recovery, enter the path to recovery, and begin the journey. Once on the path, I discovered to my delight that the path was protected with guardrails we built and I was carrying with me the necessary tools to confront the inevitable challenges in the journey on my path. The path never ends and recognition of this reality can be overwhelming, nevertheless my relationships have never been healthier and the prospects for their improvement remain brighter than ever because I equipped myself with Mark’s professional assistance.

The return on the investment (and I understand it’s expensive in every sense) in myself exceeded my expectations and could not have been achieved without the consistent, skilled, and experienced guidance provided by Mark.

I recently attended Phase 1 Brainspotting Training with Brooke Randolph, LMHC and experienced a wonderful training session. Her approach to clinical development is grounded in an anti-oppressive, inclusive, and thoughtful approach. With varied specialties and clinical experience working with clients in the classroom, Brooke was able to offer us a comprehensive approach to curriculum and application that was well-informed and supportive to the learning environment. If you are considering becoming trained in Brainspotting, I highly recommend seeking out Brooke’s guidance.

During my separation and before my divorce, I turned to Brooke for help. It was one of the best decisions I made. I ‘forced’, my boys to also see her. They were 12 at the time, and as typical boys didn’t want to talk to anyone. I’m glad I did that too. She took care with them and learned their behavior styles. In turn, was able to give me advice that best suited them, and their needs.

Her dedication was and is something I will always appreciate. My boys are well and we have adjusted into a wonderful family. There’s still issues, and there will be, that’s natural, it’s having the tools to help guide communication and conflict. Something we all need to learn and Brooke is amazing at teaching these skills.

I highly recommend Brooke and wouldn’t go to anyone else if my needs arise.

I have been with this company over a year now. I am giving them 5 stars because Tyler Smith is my NP and he has motivated me to try to not be on as many meds across my health, listens to me if I need to vent or talk, and isn’t afraid to tell me if I have toxic behaviors that need corrected or if there are people being toxic to me. The only complaint I have about this company is they cannot seem to retain their therapists. I have been thru several. After the last one left, I quit therapy. When you have a history of trauma it’s hard to find even a professional to open up to and trust, let alone going thru several. If you are the CEO of this company, either start paying your therapist enough to stay or offer an excellent benefit package as incentive for them to want to stay. If you are from a rural area, this company offers virtual visits so you may only need to drive to their location twice the first year and once after that, though I will state I am not sure if that is an insurance, bureaucratic, or company policy. They do not take Medicaid, but can refer you to someone who does. They recently changed their answering service which was a step in the wrong direction, but every staff member I have had interactions with has always been pleasant. With some minor tweaks this company could very easily become a number one counseling, therapy, medication management corporation. I am just a normal person who has had some very unfortunate events in my life causing deep trauma that I don’t just hope to heal from, but to become the best version of myself.

I reached out to Chris 2 years ago when I was struggling with anxiety, grief, rumination, and OCD-adjacent behavior and thoughts. When Chris and I first met, my son’s condition was severe. We collaborated with multiple therapists, and Chris worked seamlessly with them all to meet our son’s needs. He honored our family’s religious practices and addressed concerns about religious OCD with great respect, ensuring we could remain true to who we are. My son always looked forward to his sessions with Chris, drawn to his humor and lighthearted approach. When therapy fatigue set in, Chris was the first to suggest alternative options that prioritized my son’s well-being. Today, I can say something I never thought I’d say again: my son is thriving! Thank you, Chris!

I sought OCD-specific help at a point in my life when I felt completely hopeless. I feel unbelievably grateful to have found Chris and his OCD-specific approach/expertise, something that was incredibly different from the therapy I had been receiving (for years!). Chris remained extremely compassionate while challenging my anxiety, allowing me to make change I had genuinely never imagined in/for my life. I feel MUCH more equipped to handle anxiety when it arises and have since felt significantly less depressed and engaged with life in turn. I would highly, highly, highly recommend investing in services at Indy OCD; Chris not only offered me hope at a time in which I had none, but provided me with the tools that has allowed me to continue to feel hopeful and capable.

As a practical example, I was terrified to fly because I was afraid to have a panic attack when on the plane, but I love to travel and with his help I was able to travel to Italy and Greece this year! OCD therapy has changed my life. More specifically, therapy through IndyOCD and with Chris Toomer has helped me immeasurably with my OCD struggles. Before starting OCD therapy, I felt hopeless in my debilitating ruminations, intrusive thoughts, and harmful behaviors. The biggest shift in thought for me has been accepting I don’t have to make life complicated by attempting to think through every scenario. Chris has an excellent way of distilling our issues with OCD into simple actionable solutions through exposure therapy, EMDR, and giving us better and simpler ways to view ourselves and the world around us. Could not recommend his services enough. If you have OCD, or even think you might, and the means to go to therapy, do it ASAP.

I’ve been a patient here for over 6 years and have had some issues here and there but it took me a while to realize how much this place cares about their patients. They have been there for me through everything and never gave up on me or kicked me out of therapy for my behavior, which is improving thanks to my new treatment plan with Dr. Patrick Z. I realize that mental health therapy takes time and not everything is going to work right off the bat. Maybe its a breakthrough i’ve had while in treatment, or maybe it’s me finally growing up. If you’re willing to be patient and put the time and effort into your therapy, you’ll get alot farther than you would just by taking pills and calling it a day. I’ll always recommend this place! Thanks guys

I used to feel like I was carrying around a heavy weight every single day. No matter what I did, the sadness and anger would creep back in. After starting therapy, I slowly began to feel different. At first, it was small things—sleeping better, not feeling drained all the time, and actually wanting to spend time with my family. Now I feel like I have energy again, and I’m able to deal with problems without shutting down. It’s a huge relief to finally feel like myself.

I came into therapy feeling completely drained and hopeless. I couldn’t focus at work, my sleep was awful, and I felt disconnected from everyone. Slowly, things started to shift. I began noticing that I wasn’t as quick to lose my temper, I had more energy, and I actually wanted to spend time with people again. It’s not an overnight change, but it’s real. Therapy gave me back parts of myself I thought were gone for good.

Therapy gave me a safe place to talk about things I’ve never shared with anyone. Having that space has helped me heal in ways I didn’t think possible. I’m slowly becoming the best version of myself again.

i was very excited to start this new path of therapy, but this place really rubbed me the wrong way. i usually don’t post like this, but i couldn’t let this go unsaid.
i met with an intake therapist yesterday. i shouldn’t have stayed on the whole call. SO MANY RED FLAGS!!!! she refused to set me up with a regular therapist. she told me i did not QUALIFY and had no option other than doing an intensive 3 month outpatient course.
she also suggested i STOP seeing my primary care recommended psychiatrist… and only see harmony bay for future medicine management. this also upset me because i made it clear a goal was to stop medication, and she then replied “with your diagnosis you will have to be medicated your whole life” (keep in mind this is my brand new diagnosis she had just thrown on me and told me to “look it up later”)
the ending of the call felt very manipulative and forceful toward this “intinsive outpatient” which after much much self reflection i really do not need. i just want and need a regular therapist… she brought up my future of children and how if im not medicated and don’t do this, i will basically fail as a parent.
i had already been contacted about the intensive outpatient as an option and they attempted to force me to enroll prior to even having my intake appointment. so i really think this is their play, so be careful. i’m now upset they have all my info and fear them contacting my insurance with this “new diagnosis”. and i still have to pay for this “intake” when they won’t even take me as a client for therapy… so be very wary.

****EDIT****
I spoke with the team that reached out about my concerns, and over the phone she was very apologetic and understanding. Over email they then doubled down on their recommendations and stated: “Regarding the outcome of your intake session, we recognize your dissatisfaction. However, based on the clinical concerns identified during the session, the referral to a higher level of care was appropriate and necessary. As the intake session was completed in full, the associated charges will remain in place.”
I spoke with my primary care physician, a new therapist (that I found) and all my friends and family that had no belief that I needed such a recommendation. So my review will stand as is, I do not recommend this place to anyone who is truly seeking help.

They are dishonest! Stay away, they are not safe.
One of the HBW therapists was recommended to me and I set up the onboarding appointment, where a receptionist took my insurance information. They charged me $175 just to collect my insurance information.
By the time I was scheduled to see the therapist, she resigned from Harmony Bay Wellness. So I cancelled my appointment. I never spoke to a therapist and they will not refund my $175. I disputed the charge and they said the charge stands.

UPDATE: Below the owner responded and asked that I reach out so they can make it right, I reached out and they did nothing.

Avoid Harmony Bay Wellness, they are dishonest.

This is their response:

“We sincerely regret that you are still dissatisfied with our response. Our leadership team has thoroughly reviewed your original grievance once again, and after careful consideration, we have determined that our initial decision remains unchanged. The intake session was completed in full, and the charges are therefore valid.”

They are keeping my $175.00 just for taking my insurance information.

I used to lose my temper over small things. Now, I can pause, think, and respond without guilt afterward. It’s been a big step forward in becoming the person I want to be.

COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME! DON’T GIVE THESE MONEY GRABBERS YOUR MONEY!

THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU!

I went here to try an individual therapist and after a lengthy intake they decided they’re going to keep that behind red tape!

Will only allow me a therapist if I quit my current IOP program and join theirs! There’s a therapist in their IOP program but you don’t get to continue seeing them you have to start all over after the programs is completed!!!

Why would I want to go through a program I’m already half over with and then want to start over with an entire new therapist?!

FACILITIES LIKE HARMONY BAY ARE WHY WE CAN’T GET DECENT HEALTHCARE IN THIS COUNTRY!

WOULD GIVES ZERO STARS IF I COULD!

The process emphasizes clear communication about expected outcomes, potential risks, and the spectrum of available remedies, ensuring clients have a solid foundation before proceeding with any action.

    Contract Drafting and Review

In the realm of agreements, Indianapolis civil attorneys provide contract drafting and review services aimed at clarity, balance, and enforceability. Civil attorneys in Indianapolis facilitate confidential mediation sessions, help identify mutually acceptable terms, and guide parties toward settlement agreements that address the interests of both sides. They may also coordinate arbitration or structured negotiations, emphasizing collaborative problem-solving to reduce time, cost, and emotional strain associated with courtroom proceedings.

    Personal Injury and Tort Claims

When harm occurs, civil attorneys in Indianapolis handle personal injury claims arising from negligence, intentional misconduct, or product liability. Employment Law and Labor Issues

In the employment sphere, civil attorneys address workplace discrimination, wage disputes, harassment, and wrongful termination claims. They interpret state and federal statutes as they apply to both employees and employers, advise on contractual obligations, and pursue remedies and damages when rights are violated. The objective is to promote fair treatment, transparent processes, and lawful workplace practices while safeguarding the client’s professional interests.

    Civil Litigation and Trial Representation

When disputes escalate, civil attorneys in Indianapolis provide comprehensive civil litigation and trial representation. Throughout the process, they safeguard evidence integrity, handle expert witness coordination, and communicate developments to clients. The aim is to present a persuasive case and seek favorable outcomes through negotiation or trial.

    Appeals and Post-Trial Support

After a decision, civil attorneys offer appellate practice and post-trial motions to preserve or challenge rights. They review the trial record for error preservation, draft compelling appellate briefs, and advocate on appeal to higher courts. Additionally, they assist with judgment enforcement and the coordination of remedies requested by the client, ensuring that successful results are fully realized and sustained over time.

Frequently asked questions about mental health therapists in Indianapolis

What types of mental health professionals practice therapy in Indianapolis?

In Indianapolis there are several types of licensed professionals who provide therapy, including Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), Psychologists (PhD or PsyD), and Psychiatrists (MD). Some clinicians operate in private practice, clinics, or hospital settings. While psychiatrists can offer medication management in addition to therapy, many therapists focus on talk therapy and evidence-based approaches. The right choice depends on your needs, goals, and comfort level with your provider.

How can I find a licensed therapist in Indianapolis?

To locate a licensed mental health professional in Indianapolis, start with trusted referrals from your primary care clinician or friends, then search through reputable online directories and verify each candidate’s license status with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Schedule a brief initial consult to assess fit and approach.

Do therapists in Indianapolis accept insurance, and how are sessions priced?

Many therapists in Indianapolis accept private insurance plans and some participate in Managed Care networks; others operate on a sliding scale or offer out-of-pocket rates. Session lengths commonly run around 45 to 50 minutes. If you have coverage, confirm the provider’s participation and any deductibles, co-pays, or preauthorization requirements.

What should I expect during my first therapy session in Indianapolis?

The first session is typically an intake where the therapist asks about your history, symptoms, and goals, and explains confidentiality rules and the therapeutic contract. You’ll have a chance to share concerns and ask questions about the treatment plan and expected session frequency.

What therapy approaches are commonly used by therapists in Indianapolis?

Common approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic therapy, and trauma-focused modalities such as EMDR. Some clinicians tailor modalities to your needs, blending strategies to address mood, anxiety, trauma, or relationship concerns.

Is teletherapy available in Indianapolis and is it effective?

Teletherapy is widely available in Indianapolis via video sessions or secure phone calls. It can increase access for those with scheduling constraints or transportation barriers and has demonstrated comparable clinical effectiveness to in-person care for many conditions.

When might I need therapy versus medication, and who prescribes medications in Indianapolis?

Therapy and medication are often combined when appropriate. Therapists typically do not prescribe medications; psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) provide prescriptions and collaborate with therapists to optimize care. A clinician may refer you to a medication evaluation if needed.

How is confidentiality protected in therapy in Indianapolis?

Therapy is protected by strict privacy standards and HIPAA regulations, with limits including safety concerns, child or elder abuse reports, and risk of harm to self or others. Your personal information is disclosed only with your consent or as legally required.

How long does therapy take and how do therapists measure progress?

Therapy duration varies widely based on goals, severity, and personal circumstances. Some people benefit from short-term interventions, while others pursue long-term therapy. Progress is tracked through goal setting, patient-reported symptoms, and occasional standardized assessments.

What crisis and emergency resources exist for mental health in Indianapolis?

For immediate crisis help, you can call or text 988, the nationwide Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In Indianapolis, local hospital emergency departments and community mental health centers offer crisis stabilization services and urgent assessments. If you or someone is in danger, call your local emergency number immediately.
