I come to the humane society to give some love and to receive some in return. I visit the kittens and cats. Maybe I’ll adopt one some time soon. I had to let my cat of 17 yrs old go to the rainbow bridge in June. I adopted her from this humane society when she was 7 months old. She was the best! She was my heart. Maybe I’ll find another here some time soon.

I love volunteering here and even ended up getting a cat too! The volunteer coordinator Sara is wonderful and did a great job at the orientation. They do a great job with training and the system makes it convenient. The facility is wonderful and they take great care of the animals. I love my cat that I got and the process was great! They have so much advice and material for taking care of her!

I adopted a kitten that was apparently ill at that time. 2 days later my poor lil Kenji’s breathing became worse. I took her to the ER Vet and found out she had pneumonia and the airways to her lungs were clogged up. It would have cost me $$$$$ and further talking with the vet, the best thing was to put her down. The worst day I had in a long time. I called the Indy Humane the next day to let them know and asked if anything they could do to help me out…at least with the cost. The said no but I could come back and adopt another pet at no charge. No thank you.

This is a beautifully organized and well staffed humane society. You are allowed to come in and visit the animals here, and my friend and I spent about an hour visiting. There was not a single resident that we did not love. It was a great experience, and I appreciate all the hard work the staff do to help all of these animals!

THE BEST vaccine clinic experience. I live 6 minutes from Low Cost Clinic in Noblesville. But that location has no appointments, walk in only, not enough parking and the experience is always nerve wracking. I decided to make the drive to Indy Humane off Michigan Rd and I will KEEP COMING BACK FOREVER. Large waiting area, super fast service, The ability to make an appointment is amazing. Staff was super friendly as well. Thank you, thank you we will be back for all our vaccine needs for our furry family members.

My partner and I adopted 2 cats and are fostering a third with FIV. I was very impressed with the continued care they’ve provided our foster.
He’ll go in shortly for a dental appointment , paid for by IndyHumane. After that, we’ll be able to adopt him permanently. Btw those dental appointments can be a bit pricey.
We really recommend IndyHumane! They really love the animals in their care!

I am impressed beyond words! I was welcomed at the front door, n directed to the front desk. I was kindly greeted and told the lady the name of the dog I had traveled 2 1/2hrs to meet. I also told her I had submitted my application online. She reviewed it with me, then paged a young man to help me. This whole place was so clean, fresh and beautiful! He nicely introduced himself and led me out to an incredibly large fenced, astro turf meeting area with a bench, and asked me to wait while he got Lacey. I’ve had numerous dogs through the years, but you never know what to expect from a dog that’s been in a shelter. When he brought her in and set her down, she instantly ran straight to me! I knew in that moment she was for me! She didn’t care about running around the rest of the yard. She just wanted to be with me. We talked, and he said she would need to meet my Golden Retriever. I had her in my van, so I brought her in. They acted like they’d known each other forever! Next was completing the paperwork. So he took me back inside and told me I could have a seat till they called my name. It was only a few minutes, but it gave me time to look around. They have beautiful cat kennel rooms and a lovely little shopping area. It’s obvious how well all the pets are cared for. They’re all so happy and clean. My name was called, and a receptionist introduced herself. We completed all the paperwork, which I was impressed was so thorough and well explained. Then she paged a behaviorist to further discuss what to expect and what to do. If I had any problems or questions, I should contact them. She handed me the folder of copied paperwork and a bag of food. The nice man brought Lacey to me in a brand new collar and the harness I’d gotten her. It was such an Awesome experience, I have Never seen a Humane Shelter like it! WoW!
We made the long trip home, and Lacey is so happy and spoiled, of course. She goes everywhere with me and instantly wins the hearts of every person and pet she meets!! Thank you All, for the love and care you shared with her. I know it made a big difference! I even got a call from a lovely volunteer a couple of weeks later to see how we were doing. We will live happily ever after together!
I just hope and pray that you can maintain your high standards, and that other shelters will follow your example! Thank you again and again!

A wonderful experience and a very clean, organized, and welcoming facility. I was amazed how all the staff and volunteers know their animals so well. We came in with an idea of what we were looking for, and they immediately started giving suggestions! They gave us all their time and attention and made us feel completely comfortable with the process. Highly recommend this shelter!

Wonderful place. Originally we went looking for a different dog, but we didn’t know he had quite the extensive medical background, my partner and I wouldn’t have made a good match for him and one of the front desk girls explained his situation very well and pointed us in a new direction with our current living situation (apartment) and work schedules. We met a cute pitty, but we fell in love with our original pup that we saw instantly online, Mister Loki, and she explained his background and how he would be with our cat. Everyone was super helpful through the whole process. We’ve had him for 4 months now and chose to name him Stark, he is such a good, sweet, goofy boy. We also got him neutered here and everything went so smoothly, the staff is super nice, very helpful, and invested in all the animals. We’ve also donated quite a few items to this place. I would 100% recommend this place to everyone and if we adopt again we will be going back here! Thanks again to the staff!

We surrendered Suzu to hamilton humane, not because we are terrible pet owners, but because financially it was not in the budget to care for her or her sister judi (who was also surrendered to hamilton humane). Working for a vet clinic, another employee had suzu and judi as farm cats. They needed a “foster” home until they could find their forever home. We decided to take them in under the condition it was temporary. 3 months later, the owner decided to cut contact with us and literally abandoned them to our home. At that point, we already had 2 cats and a dog. Our home was congested at that point and suzi and judi were not meant to stay with us permanently. We had them a little over a year before we decided to surrender them. So there’s that.
The description of suzu is NOT correct. We NEVER CORNERED any of our animals to cut their nails or “check them”. They always came to us and at that point it was gental interactions.
The staff at this establishment is a joke. They look at you and treat you like trash just because you cant care for the animal(s) you bring to them. THATS WHAT YOUR BUSINESS IS LITERALLY THERE FOR PEOPLE!!! If you dont like how it is, then find a different job not dealing with people, because nobody wants to deal with your snarky attitude towards them when they bring animals to you. Its hard enough to make the decision to surrender them, let alone feel like you are being scolded for doing so by the staff.

A couple of years ago we adopted our beautiful boy Jack from this place. He was a young pup and full of potential. Over the years we put him through training and he has turned into the bestest boy! When we brought him home we had three other dogs and one cat and he fit in like a glove. Unfortunately we lost our cat Josh due to health issues. Recently we decided it was time to adopt another cat. We decided to come back to Hamilton Humane Society because that’s where we got our Jack from and we thought they stood for something and believed in rehabilitation and reformation. They denied us immediately because when they first tested Jack he failed the cat test due to high prey drive when he first arrived at the shelter, even though we showed pictures and videos of Jack and Josh playing and loving on each other. Even if that wasn’t the case, the woman we were speaking with was incredibly cold and didn’t even look us in the eye when she spoke to us. I can not assume that she was homophobic but that was vibe. Because of this experience unfortunately we will never adopt from them again. We had a much better experience at Indy Humane, they were nicer, cleaner, more professional, and we saw the staff and volunteers interact and care with the animals more often. It seemed like there was discrimination towards “Pit Bulls” at Hamilton and there should be no room for that at ANY shelter!

At Misty Eyes Animal Center, the team demonstrates thoughtful care for each animal, guiding families through gentle adoptions and fostering responsible pet ownership. The environment emphasizes safety, education, and transparency, with clear steps from inquiry to settling in. I appreciated how volunteers listened, answered questions, and matched personalities to homes. The compassion and commitment to animal welfare stand out, creating trust and peace of mind for new owners.
Beyond the adoption process, Misty Eyes sustains surprising support through post-adoption check-ins and ongoing education about responsible care. The center partners with families to ensure adjustments go smoothly, and volunteers lend steady assistance even after homes are set. It feels less like a facility and more like a trusted community that champions happy, healthy lives for rescued animals and their people.

I love Misty Eyes. We adopted one kitten and the staff kept saying, “Get 2. Trust us, you’ll wish you’d have gotten 2.” They were right. Our first girl was so hungry for play and attention every moment of every day, no matter what I did! So about 6 months later, I found myself back at Misty Eyes adopting a second kitten. Both times the staff was very helpful and friendly.
I love the fact that the animals live in foster homes. It allows them to adjust to various environments. This means if you have other pets or kids, you’ll be able to find a pet who is most suitable for your home. In the second adoption, I was able to connect with the foster home which was really fun to be able to share photos and updates with the host family.
The only possible ‘down side’ to Misty Eyes is that they’re only open on weekends, and I only work weekends. I had to take time off to visit during open hours, but it was well worth it! The business is volunteer based, so being open daily is not realistic. I’m super grateful to the people who donate their time to work with Misty Eyes ❤️

I just want to say Nick Clark and Heidi are actual Godsends. Bless them eternally. I was in a chaotic situation with puppies and someone else’s dog and they pulled right in my driveway to rescue not only them but me as well. My daughter passed away a year ago from bacterial meningitis and while the puppies have kept me busy I need time to grieve correctly. Thank you so much you two. I cannot express my gratitude enough.

This place helps so many with their pets! I com here due to the expense of caring for 12 community/feral cats over the past 3 years and I’m doubtful I could provide this care without this place! I’ll have it known that they do their best to help keep the cat population down by trapping and providing reproductive surgery but there’s so many who cue pet ownership as a choice that can be changed when things get to rough! I do want tougher pet laws on things as we need to enforce responsibility on those who choose to bring an animal in their home… post not about that so let’s get back to the extraordinary people who work here as well as those who donate to this place… great jobs and many thanks! To those who can pay extra for whatever they provide would help them out and any one who reads this please consider donating… money or time!

I went to FIDO on 4/5/24 and it was a lovely experience. They were efficient and so kind in helping me with my pets. I am on disability and don’t make much a month and they really took care of my animals. I have a 12 year old inside cat 6 ferels and a pit bull who is about 10. They were wonderful and helpful. 3 boxes of wet food for my inside cat and a 50 lb bag of dog food 40 lb bag of litter and 30 lb bag of dry cat food.
There is no bathroom there keep that in mind if you go. The wait may be awhile so prepare to wait.
A kind gentleman used a push cart to deliver it all to my trunk. I could not have gotten it to the car otherwise.
Such an incredible experience and they really saved me on a really bad month. I still have to get proof that my cat is fixed so they suggested FACE to get that done.
Great organization ❤️❤️

I don’t know if these ppl can help… there’s 6 feral cats behind a rehab facility on Brookville road. The poor cats seem very sweet but of course are scared of humans. I’ve cried several nights after I fed them cause it’s so cold out and they’ve only got a field to go into… the ppl at the facility said a woman dumped two boxes of kittens off there and they’ve been there since. I’m going to call… these kitties need help

We were informed that we would never have an approved application because our previous dog did not have established veterinarian care. Our prior dog lived a great, long, healthy life (a rescue!) and did not ever have a need for vet care. He was, of course, taken to the vet when needed (he had an ear infection one time), but it sounds like this wouldn’t suffice. I understand the need to be thorough and make sure animals get into good homes, but we were shocked that our application would never be approved based on this.

Filled out the form and then talked to Amy the next day after getting approved and got the kitten the next day!!! Unless you have stellar vet history and plan to never let your cats outside then this place will deem you unfit to adopt any of their pets.
We have always had cats who live inside & out. They live happy healthy lives. Sure there’s a few more instances where the vet was needed but we can afford it and they’re so much happier it’s worth it. We didn’t raise our child in a bubble so why should cats have to live in one as well. 99.5% of cats will stick close to home and choose to be inside more time than not. In 30years we’ve only had one go missing and that’s because we moved and after a year we believe he chased a cat off and got turned around in the neighborhoods. We still have hope that a vet will scan his chip.
If you still want to bother with this place don’t bother if you can’t prove impeccable vet history either. Like humans, I don’t believe our pets should have ALL the vaccines ALL the time. Thats not a “wrong” choice. But this place has deemed that so. It’s an unpopular choice, not a wrong one.
Basically they are inflexible, judgemental and have no faith in human kind unless they follow their exact rules. It’s just sad really. So many animals need loving homes yet this place has decided for everyone what exactly a “loving home” should be. I have to really wonder if they’d even adopt out a pet if they’re political views didn’t line up. That’s how closed minded I believe them to be. Absolutely ridiculous!

This is a wonderful rescue to adopt from! It is a thorough application process, but I felt like they are rightfully concerned for the well-being of the ferrets up for adoption. Not only did they provide a time for us to introduce our ferret to potential adopters, but they also took time to answer any questions we had about parenting our girls. Even if you do not have experience with owning ferrets, the staff and volunteers at five point ferrets are sure to help you. They are available to answer any questions and have a plethora of knowledge on these adorable creatures. (They also provide a book called “ferrets for dummies”) We adopted two little ones, Nessie and Lorolai, to keep our first ferret company this past June. We love them to death and encourage anyone capable of adopting a ferret to come to five point ferrets. There are loads of little ones in need of homes!

I had a great experience here. It was an easy process. But that doesn’t mean, they aren’t responsible. They called all of my references and did their work to make sure my kitten was a good fit. They also made sure that I was fully prepared and updated on what shots my kitten still needed
hey gave me a written reminder on what was needed and when. When leaving, I accidently left without grabbing a medication for my kitten and they offered to bring it to me, since we were going to be in the same area. I would look forward to doing business with them again.

Got my pup, Ruby, from here! I rent a house so I had breed restrictions; the rescue was very good about helping me find a dog within the restrictions.
We found a dog we liked but the dog was very shy and timid. The staff let us visit her regularly (we went about 4 times) so she could warm up to us.
When we decided to take her home, Heaven After Hell Rescue ensured we had all our supplies by letting us go home with a harness, collar, leash, and food. We eventually returned those items when we got our own but appreciated them giving us something to start with.
Great experience with great employee interactions the whole time. You can tell the employees really care about all the animals!
It’s a year and a half later and we still love following Heaven After Hell Rescue on Facebook to see all their news pups and watch them find their forever homes.

I can never get a hold of anyone. It’s like they don’t even have a phone. It’s not clean outside the building and it smells like dog pee on the inside. I feel bad for the dogs staying in such a dirty place. COMPLETE FILTH. The people there are rude and will turn any dog away that is in need of help.

I adopted Boo from the rescue. Everyone that I spoke to including his foster mom was super nice, helpful and most definitely appreciative. They were more than willing to work with my schedule to meet him and made the adoption process very smooth. My next fur baby will most likely come from them again.

Indianapolis Animal Care Services demonstrates compassionate care for every animal they touch, from intake through adoption. The staff explain procedures clearly, answer questions, and treat pets with patience and respect. The facility feels well organized, and the environment is calm, which makes visits less stressful for anxious animals. I appreciated the transparent processes for intake, medical records, and adoption timelines, plus the emphasis on ongoing welfare after placement.
Beyond reunions and adoptions, the center offers helpful resources for families, fosters community involvement, and ensures quality medical care for every eligible animal. I left feeling confident in the staff’s dedication, noting how they coordinate with volunteers, provide post-adoption support, and champion responsible ownership. For anyone considering adopting or volunteering, Indianapolis Animal Care Services stands out as a thoughtful, trustworthy partner in animal welfare and rescue.

Staff are amazing with the animals. Clean & smells clean each time I went there. They are very helpful and informative.
They seem to truly love and take care of all of these animals. If you can donate,or adopt they really can use it. We went to see 4-5 dogs. The staff was very patient and helpful. We came home with Chai ☺️
He’s an awesome handsome guy. He’s not had any accidents in the house & goes into the create ( I try to get him to sleep with me he’s not there yet) on his own (we don’t even shut the door). We’re so happy with him. He’ll be so spoiled!! ❤️
Thank you all for your help! If you ever need me to foster give me a call

We have been dealing with them for weeks to do something about the German Shepherd that runs around the neighborhood and our year with no leash as its owners allow him to, and they won’t do anything. We have a little dog that we walk and too many times has that dog ran up on us and tried to be aggressive with him.
I’ve already seen it be aggressive with an adult man, who was scared.
That dog also has a good chance of being hit by a car.

Staff are amazing with the animals. They seem to truly love and take care of all of these animals. If you can please donate to these babies, they can use any extras of anything. They’re just like babies and children they deserve it all too!! These staff work hard to do the best they can.

It’s impossible to get a hold of these people. For a week now I’ve called numerous times and sent emails just trying to schedule an intake for a baby kitten I’ve found, and there’s been absolutely no response. The situation is tough and she won’t survive if I can’t get her somewhere. Animal Care is quite literally my only option and they’re useless. They require appointments for intakes and surrenders, but how am I supposed to do that if I can’t even make one? I don’t believe they actually care about helping animals in need.

Use caution if you are considering adopting from Indianapolis Animal Care Services. I’m incredibly sensitive to the conditions under which most shelters are operating: inundated with animals, forced to make difficult decisions, understaffed and underfunded. That said, it’s imperative staff are honest about temperaments and known history of the animals in their care. Sharing my story here to hopefully save somebody from making the same mistake.
We adopted a dog Bishop from IACS last month. We were looking for a friendly dog that was compatible with other dogs and cats since we have both. He was one of the few dogs available in the area that met both.
The staff member that we spoke with that day described him as a “shy guy” and mentioned he was adopted by “a mom with 5 kids” and returned “because he can be pushy with little ones.” He implied that she had no business adopting a young lab, but stated explicitly that he’s never seen him be aggressive.
We noticed some resource guarding initially, which we planned to manage through training but things only escalated from there. He snapped at our cat once, we then decided to feed them all separately and ensure no toys were around the house. Over the course of two weeks he got into 3 fights with our dog that only increased in severity before we agreed our home no longer felt safe.
What I was most disheartened to find out was that Bishop was previously returned and put on a bite quarantine, news that was not disclosed to us at the time we adopted him. He was deemed safe, no conditions attached. Additionally he was released into our care without having been vaccinated for rabies.
I made multiple attempts to contact the shelter to discuss why he was released into our care without fully disclosing the extent of his behavioral history (or being fully vaccinated). In total we have spent over $1,200 treating both my dog and my own bite wounds (incurred by Bishop when separating the last fight) and have yet to receive a response from IACS.
I will always advocate for adopting animals and I hope to find a companion for our dog once her wounds are completely healed. That said, the outcome most certainly would’ve been different has we known the full extent of Bishop’s history. If you are considering adopting, make sure you do your due diligence.

Excellent place to take strays or pets! I took a baby animal I found over and they were able to take it off my hands and start caring for it immediately! Very courteous and kind people, will definitely stop by if I need their help again.

They work quite diligently to get animals the care they need but they receive an insane number of animals daily. With that in mind, Upon adoption, the animals are all up to date on shots, dewormed, microchipped, spayed/neutered and sent home with resources for training. They are often understaffed because it’s a city shelter but they are always on their toes and staff clearly love the animals. They receive every stray and while they can’t assure a dog will be cat friendly, they are temperament tested prior to being available for adoption. I highly recommend this shelter and have had great success in finding lovely and beautiful dogs and cats here.

Update: I did get my voucher for the vet and got my baby fixed! This golden voucher was 25$. They are raising it to 50$. Which I think is fair. They have to be able to take care of them selves too. I will say you need to be careful about which vet you use on their list!
I do NOT recommend 4 Precious Paws in Lafayette, Indiana. They had my cat sit in his own pee for hours and himself, his blanket and his cage were soaked.

I was able to get 5 pit mix fix vouchers. So thankful. We took in a pregnant mother and then her 4 puppies. We wanted to ensure they are all fixed for their new homes. Just a heads up. Low cost spay neuter in brownsburg is on a long wait list, the vet listed for Cloverdale is on a long waitlist and Rockville road vet is no longer participating. We were able to get in All pet on west Washington st fairly quickly. These vouchers expire in 5 months so I was getting worried when I started looking around. Thank you Pet Friendly Services

Back in 2008 I was involved to help open this shelter. We had a lot of ups and downs at the first few years. With the positive help of volunteers and our community we have come a long way, and are doing well. We have a wonderful staff, all working together, which is what makes a shelter thrive. Our shelter dogs and cats get the best care and are loved and cared for by our volunteers, until they find their forever families.

A disabled friend of mine mailed an application along with 2 money orders totalling $25 to cover the fee somewhere around March 3rd 2023. The website says the turn around time is 2-3 weeks to receive the certificate. It has been 2 months and she still has not received what she paid for. Now either send her certificate to her or send her a refund. If this isn’t resolved by end of business on Monday May 8th I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau or maybe even the news because this is getting ridiculous. It should not take this long.

Hello, I have a family of cats at my house that have been taken in, and they’re reproducing more every day. They’re not mine; perhaps they belonged to someone who abandoned them. I need help rehoming them. I’ve been feeding them out of charity, but it’s no longer sustainable. Please help me.

I have had two babies adopted from here. Barb still remembers us from over two decades ago when my mom got her first cat from here. Say what you want about the surplus of cats or smell like some of the reviews say; these people do incredible work, and they truly love cats. I used to volunteer here and certainly miss it! Thank you for blessing us with amazing cats and for serving the special needs kitties that need love. Simon Henrys mom says hi to all of you! He is the most perfect and entertaining cat! Special needs adoption is awesome.

I would not recommend walking into this place. It smells awful, looks like a hoarder home, and the women there are incredibly rude.
I remember many years ago this was a good rescue, but don’t expect to be able to come here and adopt any cats. And expect to be yelled at if you walk in their door even though their hours here say they are open. It’s really sad. I hope their cats find good homes because yikes.

Was so excited to adopt from this place. She had me come out multiple times to meet the cat I wanted I brought donations and when it came to adopt she denied me because I didn’t own I rented my home. The cats are over crowded there and it is dirty. The lady’s are mean to any volunteers. I will never return. Poor cats. Hopefully they treat them better than the humans.

Bless the lady who runs this she is providing a service for cats and giving cats with disabilities a life. Non-profit organization. There should be more people like that in this world. Contract drafting and review for adoption agreements
Civil attorneys can provide contract drafting and review of adoption agreements, ensuring that terms regarding ownership transfer, health disclosures, vaccination requirements, spay/neuter status, and post-adoption expectations are clear and legally enforceable. They help shelters incorporate legally sound language for consent forms, liability waivers, and refund or return policies, reducing ambiguity for all parties involved.
Regulatory compliance and nonprofit governance
Civil attorneys offer guidance on regulatory compliance for shelters operating as nonprofit organizations. This includes advice on licensing, inspections, charity registrations, fundraising disclosures, charitable solicitation rules, and the duties of the board of directors to maintain proper governance practices and fiduciary oversight.
Risk management and liability protection
In terms of risk management, civil attorneys help shelters assess potential liabilities, draft and update liability waivers, and establish comprehensive safety policies and incident reporting procedures. They review insurance coverage, including general liability, worker’s compensation, and volunteer insurance, to identify gaps and mitigation strategies.
Dispute resolution and community mediation
Civil attorneys facilitate alternative dispute resolution processes for conflicts related to pet adoption centers, such as disputes with neighbors, landlords, volunteers, or adopters. They can draft settlement agreements, advise on enforcement options, and help shelters avoid litigation through effective mediation and negotiation.
Employment law for shelter staff
Regarding personnel, civil attorneys interpret and apply employment law relevant to shelter staff and volunteers. Areas include wage and hour compliance, leave policies, anti-harassment and safety programs, background check procedures, and the proper classification of workers to ensure compliance with state and federal employment regulations.
Privacy, donor data protection, and records management
Attorneys assist with privacy policies and donor data protection, ensuring secure handling of adopter information, volunteer records, and donor databases. They guide records management practices, data retention schedules, and breach response planning to safeguard sensitive information.
Intellectual property and branding for shelter organizations
Civil attorneys provide guidance on intellectual property matters connected to branding and outreach, including trademark protection for shelter names and logos, copyright considerations for educational materials, and licensing or partnership agreements that involve the use of the center’s branding or promotional content.
Real estate, zoning, and facility compliance
For facility operations, attorneys assist with real estate transactions, lease negotiations, and zoning or land-use compliance to ensure shelters can operate legally within their jurisdiction. They advise on building codes, accessibility requirements, and occupancy permits to maintain compliant and safe shelter facilities.
Frequently asked questions about pet adoption centers in Indianapolis
What is the typical adoption process at Indianapolis pet adoption centers?
The typical process at Indianapolis pet adoption centers usually includes completing an adoption application, arranging a meet-and-greet with the animal, and reviewing your home environment and lifestyle. After these steps, there is an approval phase before finalizing the adoption. The adoption fee often covers essential medical care such as spay or neuter, age-appropriate vaccines, a microchip, and care counseling to help you settle in successfully. If you have other pets, a supervised introduction is usually arranged to assess compatibility.
What types of pets are typically available for adoption in Indianapolis centers?
Pets available for adoption commonly include dogs and cats, along with occasional small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs, as well as birds and sometimes reptiles. Availability and mix can vary by center, so staff can discuss which options best fit your home and schedule.
What are the common adoption requirements or criteria?
Adoption criteria typically include being at least 18 years old, presenting a valid photo ID, and providing proof of address. Renting a home may require landlord approval. Centers often ask about your lifestyle, whether you have children or other pets, and your plan for providing long-term care to the animal. Honest responses help ensure a good match.
Do adoption centers in Indianapolis provide medical care before or after adoption?
Yes. Centers usually perform an initial health check and provide vaccinations, spay/neuter, and a microchip. Staff can share guidance on post-adoption care and may arrange follow-up visits if needed. Some centers also offer referrals to partner veterinarians for ongoing care.
What are typical adoption fees and what do they cover?
Adoption fees vary by animal and by age, but they generally cover a portion of the animal’s medical care, including spay or neuter, vaccinations, and a microchip. Fees also help support shelter operations and can include a basic wellness exam and a starter care package. Discounts may be available for seniors or for adopting multiple pets.
Can I adopt a pet if I already have other animals at home?
Many centers welcome adopters with existing pets, but you will typically participate in a meet-and-greet to assess compatibility. Some places offer a trial adoption or a care plan to help with the transition. It’s important to bring information about your current pets, including their vaccines and temperament, so staff can make a safe match.
What happens if the adoption doesn’t work out after I bring a pet home?
Most centers have a return policy or a grace period to ensure the animal can be rehomed in a safe environment. If the match isn’t successful, you should contact the center promptly to arrange a respectful return. Staff may offer rehoming support or alternatives to help you and the animal find a better fit.
How can I volunteer or support pet adoption centers in Indianapolis?
Volunteer options typically include fostering animals, assisting at adoption events, or helping with shelter operations. Financial contributions and donations of pet supplies are also important. Centers may provide training for volunteers and clear guidelines on responsibilities and scheduling.
Do I need to live in Indianapolis or the surrounding area to adopt a pet?
Policies vary by center. Some centers primarily serve Indianapolis and the immediate surrounding area, while others may facilitate adoptions to a broader region. It’s best to check the center’s service area and any transport options if you are outside the immediate locality.
What should I bring to my adoption visit?
When you visit for an adoption, bring photo ID, proof of address, and any information about your current pets. It’s helpful to prepare a list of questions for staff about care, training, housing, and ongoing medical needs. For dogs, you may also want to bring a collapsible leash and a carrying crate, and for cats a carrier can simplify the visit.
