I went to the school of music technology. By far the best musical decision I’ve ever made. World class sound engineers with impressive resumes and experience. State of the art technology and great recording environment. The teaching was super specific to my needs and Ryan, Carey, max, Isiah, covered every question I had and then some. My knowledge of recording and mixing as a whole has skyrocketed and made me realize my flaws in my technique. These guys are true professionals and if you’re thinking about recording here or going to school I can promise this is the best studio in Indiana.

Julianna Britt

My sister and I have taken lessons for 6 years, and I wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. We’ve found a family here, one that we can chat, jam out, and laugh with. Mr. Mike is a fantastic teacher and always makes his students smile. Indy Music Academy has a very relaxed, open atmosphere and environment while still pushing us students to work our hardest and perform our very best during performances. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind.

The entire team at Indianapolis Music Academy is amazing. We’ve had multiple teachers help us over our time there. Each teacher truly cares about there students and helps them with great music instruction. They definitely treat everyone like family. Our children have really enjoyed their time there and have made a lot of progress in their music abilities. They even helped us form a band, which has been a lot of fun and a great learning experience. Thanks Indianapolis Music Academy!

Mike is a great guitar teacher and an even greater person. I’ve been taking lessons with him for about a year and a half now and I have to say I don’t think I would be this far with another teacher. Mike is very open to helping you learn some of your favorite songs, and I appreciate that very much. His prices are fair and reasonable for his lessons. His lesson books are easy to follow. Mike is a great guy! I completely recommend him if you are thinking about learning guitar.

Mike is a fantastic guitar instructor. Being an adult and having wanted to take lessons for a long time, I was anxious about learning the instrument and meeting an instructor. Mike was and is consistently pleasant, patient, and thorough. I would highly recommend him to anyone of any age group. I feel lucky to be taking lessons from him and look forward to what I will learn each week.

This school has really helped me find a career that I love. The instructors are very passionate about what they do and it shows in what comes out of this place. I was thinking about going through the program here. I took the tour and I thought i was a great place to be. My only issue is that they allowed drug use in the facility while i was on the tour that’s all you could smell in the air. I was told that they weren’t allowed to do that and that they will talk to them about that but definitely did not want to be in a place like that. Great staff and awesome equipment

Since the day I stepped into Azmyth School of Music Technology I have been learning and will be forever grateful for the professional experiences I’ve had and yet to have. Kevin Klaich

I’ve been a student since January of 2019! Since I’ve been attending, I’ve learned key skills on production and engineering that I would have never learned off watching youtube videos. You can’t learn EQ and Compression off videos, you need hands on training and Azmyth provides that. When you’re a student you are not just learning how to mix, or set up the mics for a musician or band to record a session. You are learning signal flow, how sound travel works, proper acoustics etc but you are also networking on the business side of the industry. The tuition amount is very affordable with payment plans compared to other schools like fullsail. Learn at your own speed, ask questions and get answers. Great atmosphere, great engineers, great mentors. I definitely wish I found this school years ago!!!!

This place is Magic ✨️ Me and a group of mom friends were traveling with our 6 kiddos and reached out to Bongo Boy. Lisa, who was so helpful, organized a little class for our group on our last day visiting Indy. Parents and kiddos sat in a circle, learned rhythms, danced, laughed and got creative for an hour. What a fun and unique session that brought us together as a group! I highly recommend you visit Bongo Boy and experience it for yourself. We all thought Lisa’s class was the highlight of our trip!

Excellent music school! My son has lessons with Ben. He has been a great mentors for my son. He structures lessons around his interest to teach the appropriate skills, he assists him in structuring reasonable goals for improvement and he always exudes a passion for music that engages my son in exploring new possibilities. My daughter took music production lessons with Ed. She learned so much! Happy to say she was accepted to every university she applied to, including her top choice: Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Only 15 kids are accepted into the Sound and Audio Engineering program each year and she got in!! They were impressed with the portfolio she submitted, part of which was created in Ed’s studio. But that’s not all… Jacobs offered her several scholarships, so her lessons with Ed have really paid off. Thanks, Ed!

V. Trimble

I have recently become serious about studying singing and I could not have found a better teacher than Jeffrey Ballard. I have been taking bi-weekly lessons from Jeff for under a year and can see that my voice is improving and that I am gaining more confidence. Jeff is able to identify my strengths and weaknesses much better than I can. If I ever walk into a lesson feeling self-critical and discouraged about my progress (because to sing well is challenging!) Jeff not only offers encouragement and analysis as to why I’m discouraged, but he also provides specific vocal exercises that get me back on track. I always leave my lessons feeling great! He is an accomplished pianist which makes singing lessons all the more enjoyable. Jeff also offers small group workshops which are educational and fun. I highly recommend Dr. Jeffrey Ballard to anyone regardless of age or level of experience.

Jeff Ballard is an outstanding, attentive, and encouraging voice teacher. He is always reading up on ways to get a more beautiful, confident sound out of his students, and I appreciate his continual efforts to improve. I enjoy the vocalization exercises he does with me at the beginning of each lesson; he always varies them to keep things fresh. I also enjoy the time we spend each lesson working on repertoire. You can either choose the songs you want to work on, or he can suggest repertoire for you. I do a combination: If I have a performance coming up, we’ll work on my songs for that performance; and if not, I’ll generally ask Jeff for suggestions of what to work on. Jeff is well-connected in the musical community and can help you find opportunities to perform. Through him, I found out about Harmonie Opera, where I now perform several times a year. He also puts on studio recitals that are lovely. Definitely worth your time and investment!

Lisa Dovey

Jeffrey Ballard truly provides exceptional voice training. I am an older singer who went to Jeffrey a little over 2 years ago. I had experienced voice changes after singing. Jeffrey evaluated my voice and has tailored lessons to meet my needs. He also makes lessons fun. My vocal range has improved, singing is so much more enjoyable and if I am faced with a challenge in a piece I have the tools to meet the challenge. I highly recommend Dr. Ballard to anyone who wishes to improve their voice, maintain vocal health and enjoy the process!

B. Joseph Davis

Jeff Ballard’s training, experience, and education (Doctorate Degree in Musical Arts) will get ya singing if you take the time to train with him on a regular basis and apply what you’ve learned in between vocal training sessions (voice lessons). With at least 3 venues (2 in Indy and 1 in Muncie), and with an organized current calendar of availability, it has been easy enough to schedule lessons to accommodate even my busiest weekly calendars. Jeff loves what he does and works with singers of all abilities. I definitely could not sing, nor did I even know how to properly sing, when I first met with Jeff. I figured I was tone deaf or something. It turns out that tone deafness is quite rare. Many people that believe they are physically incapable of singing would benefit from vocal lessons with Jeff. Jeff’s credentials, experience, and results speak volumes on their own. But when also considering his current number of students, where his past and present students have performed, his passion, and his sincere caring personality it was a no-brainer to write this review, which was not even requested. I wish Jeff the continued success he truly deserves!!!

Michelle Knoll

Dr. Ballard is an amazing instructor that will start exactly at your competency level in music and voice and move you forward with meticulous guidance personalized to you. Whether you are an advanced singer or just beginning, I would certainly consider enrolling. My daughter has been taking vocal lessons at Ballard’s Studio for 5 years and has gained enough skill that she will be auditioning to attend music school in college. Beyond that, her love for a variety of genres of music and her interest and competency in language has developed immensely. Definitely consider trying it out.

Joy Doerr

I am 61 years old and have been taking voice lessons from a number of teachers since age 14. Jeff is the FINEST voice teacher I have ever had (and I went to IU School of Music!). He is always positive and encouraging as well as always open to any type of music and genre you may wish to study. Not only is a wonderful one-on-one teacher, he periodically gives fabulous vocal workshops. In addition, he has an uncanny knack of explaining techniques and approaches to your music in a way that you best process them — whether it be through visualization or demonstration, etc. — he just has a way of communicating with you that is BEST for you! Whatever your age or ability, I would highly recommend Jeff as your teacher!!

Shannon McKinney

Jeff has been a wonderful teacher. I am so happy I ran into someone who is a student of his and made the recommendation. I’ve been a student of his for about two years. My voice has grown incredibly since I started working with him. He has a great deal of experience working with all styles of singing, and that experience has helped me really identify the songs and arias that work best for me. I appreciate his honesty when my technique is incorrect as well as his encouragement when I’m doing well. When I first started with him, I had some previous experience but still didn’t quite know where my voice fit in the world. Now I’m able to identify repitoire that will fit well with my fach and feel things clicking into place much more easily.

In 2015 I accepted my calling to complete the project called «The Journey». I collaborated with several people that would say one thing and do another. As a result my confidence was shaken. Then God directed me to Humble Creations with Randall Rosenthall. He and his team proved to be the best of the best. I had MANY questions and really didn’t know what I was doing. Lol, but Brother Randall and his team showed me what God was trying to tell me: that He had called and equipped me for this project. As God had ordained the finished product was great. I recently finished my second project and it was even more dynamic. I am currently working on my third project right now! I love and appreciate that neither Randall nor his team would allow me to me get away with being lazing or timid… I had to walk and sing in the authority that God had given me. Thank Humble Creations!

HCS is wonderful. It’s my home away from home for weekly rehearsal and I’ve just started some tracking (acoustic Alternative). Randall’s enthusiasm about music gives HCS a fantastic vibe. Would recommend HCS to anyone and everyone.

The Indianapolis Suzuki Academy has been great for our little girl. She started at 2 and is now 3. She sings songs, dances, plays instruments and is learning basic theory (wether she knows it or not). She is excited to learn more and sings the songs and dances the routines all week in anticipation of her next class. I can not recommend the academy highly enough.

Also, a very beautiful lady and is not in the least snobbish about how pretty she is. If you need a patient violin instructor, you can’t do better than Angela–she is the best. I have two girls in The Little Mermaid, and have been appalled by Michelle’s behavior toward the end of the session. Two and a half weeks before the final show (after 4 months of rehearsals) Michelle abruptly cancelled the performance. She first sent out an extremely nasty email to all the parents telling us that we were awful, and our children are replaceable. She then held a parent meeting, where her behavior went downhill fast. She cancelled the show and then made a couple scenes in front of the kids on the way out the door. I don’t understand what brought all this on, but what she did to our children is Unforgivable.

My son had been apart of several of the productions through IPAA with Michelle As each performance got closer she became pretty unstable with dealing with the children in an appropriate way and extremely unpredictable of her actions Also the start of this spring 2017 classes of The Little Mermaid began and three weeks before the production she canceled the classes, production, and cast party for ALL HOMESCHOOLING students and bad mouthed parents and students on facebook saying that all children are replaceable and was very emotionally unstable to the point of needing someone with her Some comments were made in front of the children which they had never heard before and made them not only uncomfortable with Michelle but also scared of Michelle Our family had donated many supplies to make props for the production as well as money that was suppose to go to purchase microphones for the children to use for that production and future productions but we never saw anything the extra donations were ask for Our family had planned to stay with the IPAA until Kristopher was no longer interested in theater which would probably be highschool he is now 8 yrs old But due to the safety issues, the unprofessionalism and the unstable mental state we will never return to it again I did not write this review to bash anyone I just want to post the awareness of the situations that we have been put through with this place and Michelle the owner/teacher Many of the other parents still have never received any type of refund nor explanation of her actions I hope that one day she will be able to fulfill her dreams of making her business what God intended but she has a lot of work to do

Frequently asked questions about music schools in Indianapolis

What types of music programs do Indianapolis music schools offer?

Indianapolis music schools offer a diverse range of programs, encompassing classical music, jazz, contemporary music, and popular music. Many schools provide specialized tracks within these genres, such as string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon), brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba), percussion instruments (piano, drums, timpani, harp), and voice. Some schools also offer programs in music theory and ear training as foundational components.

What are the typical age ranges for students at Indianapolis music schools?

Indianapolis music schools welcome students of various ages, from elementary school children (typically around 8-11 years old) through high school students and even adult learners. Some schools cater specifically to younger children, while others focus on older students or adults seeking to rekindle their musical passion. The ideal age range often depends on the instrument and the specific program's requirements.

How do the tuition costs compare between different music schools in Indianapolis?

Tuition costs at Indianapolis music schools vary considerably based on several factors, including the program’s intensity, the instructor’s experience, and the level of training offered. Generally, schools offering more intensive training and performance opportunities tend to have higher tuition fees. It's important to research tuition rates thoroughly and consider the overall cost, including instrument rental fees, supplemental materials, and potential performance expenses.

What kind of performance opportunities are available to students?

Many Indianapolis music schools actively encourage student participation in performance opportunities. Students are often given the chance to perform in school recitals, community concerts, and potentially even regional competitions or festivals. Some schools have established partnerships with local orchestras and ensembles, providing students with the chance to perform with professional musicians. The level of performance experience offered can be a significant factor when choosing a school.

What qualifications do the instructors at Indianapolis music schools have?

Indianapolis music schools typically employ highly qualified instructors, including experienced professional musicians, music educators, and university professors. Instructors often hold advanced degrees in music performance or music education and have a proven track record of success in their respective fields. It's crucial to inquire about the instructor's qualifications and experience to ensure a good fit for your learning style and musical goals.
