Shapiro’s Delicatessen in Indy is a slice of deli heaven with a cafeteria-style setup that lets you eye up the goods as you go. The place is very clean and bustling with people, so be prepared for a 5-10 minute wait – but trust me, it’s worth it.
I grabbed a tray and kicked things off with a slice of chocolate cake that looked too good to pass up. Then came the star of the show: a roasted turkey sandwich on sourdough with Muenster cheese. This thing was HUGE – piled high with tender, juicy turkey that was a cut above anything I can find near home. The side of mac-n-cheese was just okay; a bit forgettable and I’d skip it next time. The chocolate cake? A solid winner – moist, rich, and satisfying.
The only downside here is the price. Spending nearly $30 for a sandwich, a side, a drink, and dessert is a bit of a shock, but the quality of the meat makes it worth the splurge. They really take pride in what they serve.

You can throw a dart at the menu and order it and it will be the best food you ever had at this restaurant!
I researched this place before I visited Indianapolis and the restaurant still exceeded my expectations. I got to stay in Indianapolis for four days and I ate there four days. I pretty much had everything once and they were ALL delicious!
The food is the best I have ever had at a deli. Literally everything is amazing. Also, the bakery is the best I have ever been to. I am now obsessed with all the items and sad that I won’t be able to have it all the time because I don’t live in this state.
The weekend only breakfast is definitely a hidden jewel and anyone who has the opportunity should try it and you will know how amazing your day is going to be because you started with Shapiro’s food!!!
Also, the staff are the best! All of them are super helpful and friendly. I got to know Greg and John and their recommendations are amazing.
I cannot wait to come back again!

I had pretty high expectations for this place that has been around since 1905, and the sourdough bread pretty much fell apart as I was eating my sandwich. They don’t put condiments on your sandwich, you have to do that yourself with packets. The deviled egg was really good, and their desserts. They also have hot food in a cafeteria style presentation. Glad I went, but not awesome.

My wife took me to lunch to this deli since so many people were talking about it on TikTok and it was absolutely delicious. The sandwiches were huge, fresh and tasty. The customer service was outstanding from Frank, Porsha and Alisse. The cake slices were the bomb dot com too, we bought the marble and lemon cakes and both were very good. We will definitely return to this restaurant again and bring some family, friends and coworkers. I highly recommend Shapiro’s Deli you will NOT be disappointed. They also have a cafeteria style section where you can purchase an assortment of food such as spaghetti, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, roasted chicken and more. I give them 10 stars ✨

WOW the Jewish side of me really got a kick out of this place. It was just like eating at my grandma’s house the second you entered the restaurant. The smells, the food options, the everything. Fantastic sandwiches, soups, salads, and other meals to choose from. They also have a bunch of great desserts too. The seating area is great and open and it wasn’t too busy when we went (however we did go at 3pm). I got the half brisket sandwich with chili (it was Cincinnati style since it had spaghetti noodles too). My wife got a tuna sandwich, matzo ball soup, and german chocolate cake and wanted seconds cause it was that dang good. For sure a place you gotta try when visiting Indianapolis. I’m sure glad we did!!

Haven’t seen one in years so I had to stop (twice on my run each time I drove to Indy). It seems to have gotten better over the years since they’ve been around locally.
Honestly, this is one of those places where if it closes you can’t ever understand why it closed. Great service here at this one. Thanks.
Tom Barstow

Great customer service food was hot and very good.

Best fast Italian food ever. The baked chicken alfredo tasted so amazing. I always get a triple chocolate cheesecake because it has such a rich taste. Their pizza tastes great as a side. You can’t go wrong with anything. The staff here is very friendly .

This young gentleman was so polite. I loved his hospitality and I was just in the drive-through. I adore the whole team and how they made sure I had all my utensils, forks my knives, napkins, ranch, extra breadsticks. This really made my day.

Wow..the staff that was working tonight was on it! Everything was cooked perfectly and the manager was extremely nice. Best Fazolis I’ve been to by a long shot.

UPDATE O7/25/24 ***** After leaving the below review City Barbeque emailed me a $15 gift card. I gave them a 2nd chance and ordered 2 sandwiches for $19 and paid the difference. IT WAS WORSE THAN THE FIRST TIME!!!!!! *****THIS LOCATION IS TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!******
I got a pulled pork sandwich and it was DRY with some portions of the meat being inedible.
Also tried the Nashville hot sandwich and the sauce and pickle were good but the chicken, yep you guessed it OVERCOOKED AND DRY!!!!!
Coleslaw was cabbage and nothing else in mayo.
Screw me once, shame on you.
Screw me twice, shame on me.
******NEVER AGAIN AT THIS LOCATION!!!!!!
Got the 3 meat combo and cornbread.
Paid $28.59 including the $3.15 upcharge for brisket as a choice.
Brisket – very small portion and dry
Pulled pork – very small portion and the fattiest I’ve ever had
Sausage – salty, cheap, grocery bin style
Man n’ cheese – standard but decent
Cornbread – overcooked and tasted of burnt oil on exterior
BBQ Sauce – I got the original. It was so sickening sweet I would hate to see how sweet the sweet one is.

It’s a great day with good eats whenever I visit City Barbeque . I’ve been eating here for years & the biggest complaint I have is I’m not a fan of their sauce…but their BBQ is so good I usually eat it without sauce . You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu ;; from their ribs , to the baked beans , to their brisket , the wings & everything else they have to offer . I definitely enjoy their seasonal items as well such as their Carolina Goldmine sandwich & their Brisket Frito’s pie . The main thing I wish they would bring back && make a part of their regular menu items is their DEEP FRIED RIBS with horseradish sauce . That was the sole thing that made me fall in love with City Barbeque and had me ordering from there every single day . If you’ve never been , make sure you try it out . You won’t be disappointed
Daerick Laird

I normally come to get their greens. They are so good. But it’s been months since I’ve came due to me being on a completely different side of town. This last time I did a curbside pickup. The guy was nice. I got two polish sausages and a quart of greens. The greens had a lot of vinegar in them over powering the taste. I was so upset because I drove a long, long way to get them. And although my sausages look good from this picture they were actually crisp burnt on the other side of them. So much so you couldn’t bite into them. I guess they said if I put the burnt part in the bun she won’t notice. I was so disappointed.
Alana Myeshia Mccloud

Fooled this Texan. I’ve had worse. Collard greens and side salad were good, crispy clean fresh veggies. BBQ sauces were not consumed.
carl carl

Same as any other location. Had a full slab of St. Louis style ribs, Mac and cheese, fries. If my Uber driver was only able to find the correct address of my hotel, my food may have been hot. Well, at least warm. But it wasn’t. Not the restaurant’s fault, I’m aware. I’ll still keep going though……

Food was good. I had the Beef Manhattan and it was a huge plate of meat, bread, and mashed potatoes! My hubby had the fried chicken, white meat, and said it was juicy and very good! We also loved the desserts, mine was the Strawberry shortcake. Delicious! Hubby had the cheesecake and liked it but would have preferred if it had maybe cherries and a little whipped cream on it. Our server was very friendly and nice.

Nice friendly service. Hot comfort food… Sit down and eat at a reasonable price… Daily specials… $20 bucks and you’re eating good
Detrice Hood

We went there to meet a couple of friends for lunch. The chicken and noodles were not good AT ALL. I couldn’t even eat them. My husband got the shrimp and he said was very dry. Way overpriced for what you get! Used to love going here, but we won’t be going back.

Dinner time was very delightful. Menu was very inviting. Supper was delicious. Holly dining room host provided good and very helpful with our group from Crestwood South on Wednesday evening on November 17, 2021. Keep up the good work.
P.S. Purchased menu items to take home.
David Warstler

The food wasn’t good unfortunately and its completely overpriced, i shouldn’t be paying $110 for 2 plates of food, and 2 drinks, especially when it wasn’t a lot of food at all. there isn’t really service they kinda just give you the food and make you pay as soon as you get it, and the atmosphere is very dead, the only staff member on the floor was whoever was cleaning and she gave us more conversation than anyone and was just nicer than everyone in general.

****EDIT****
The owner has for 2 months refused to acknowledge the fact they almost fed me metal pieces because they know this was grossly incompetent. Clearly they only care about your money and don’t care of you get hurt or sick consuming their products. Take your money to a more competent and less cowardly ran location at the very least would rate my over all experience a -1 out of 10.
Just got my bowl here on 8/12/24 and I found two pieces of metal in my food. Idk if it’s staples or part of the grill scrape brush. But I won’t be going back to this location anytime soon. Honestly worthy of an easy law suite
adam stahl

This is the worst Qdoba I’ve ever had. I got a chicken bowl and there is barely any meat. I honestly think there’s 1/4 of a cup in here and the minuscule amount of meat that is in here is all fat, cannot chew and I’m scared to even eat it because it doesn’t even look properly cooked. Waste of 13 dollars. Any other locations Ive been to (not in Indy) has been great and I’ve always liked Qdoba better than Chipotle. Not this time. Disgusting. Second Picture attached is the amount of chicken in the bowl LOL. Must be a joke right? Nah.
Leanna Linaris

Been here a few times. Fair review. Every time burritos are tiny. Half of the drink options are typically out in the machine. No sauces available.
Worst part is this location typically serves college kids. What a shame.
Pooty

I work at a local school and cater from this location often. They always do an amazing job of reaching out the morning they plan to cater just to double check the plan. They are always punctual and have all the items needed. Special shout out to Emily Gonzalez who always goes above and beyond to make it a good experience.

These must be AI robots responding and they definitely do not post reviews in the order received. The old but good reviews are placed on top. They give these responses as if they are eager to fix the issue but I never received a response when i emailed.

This place has a special feel of respect to me. It’s always so quiet and the atmosphere is perfect for a group setting. I usually pop in and get the fresh food made daily that is sooooo good. If you haven’t had that friend chicken get there it is amazing. I also recommend you leave room for a fancy dessert with plenty to choose from. I used a coupon today for free pie so I went with pecan pie wow, wow, wow, it left me speechless. This place is so local and has convenient parking. It’s a must stop in if near the east side of town.

I absolutely love and see if you’re looking for home cooked food..
The only thing I would say is it is pretty expensive. 2 people is about 40 or 50 bucks. The food is amazing tho. I think the portions of the meat especially could be bigger especially for the price.
The service is amazing they now have people come to the table and ask how your food is and bringing napkins if you need them and that’s really nice.. and please remember to tip the servers. Most places don’t even pay them $5.00 an hour and waitress tips get taxes also!!!

Very DISAPPOINTED I bought a child’s meal, and the catfish was OVER COOKED mostly breading. TERRIBLE for my Client that I purchased it for to give her a break from the facility food. The side’s mashed potatoes with gravy ( the gravy went into the bag ) the Green beans were THE BEST. The clover roll was very upsetting it was Hard and I asked for a coke/Pepsi and ended up with diet ? Normally the meals are wonderful and Ms Kitty ( my client) for about 2 months and This was by far THE WORST. I tried reaching out to MCL but No one cared to speak with me. The reason I get a child’s meal is Ms. Kitty is 92 and really doesn’t eat a lot.

Katina is the BEST!! I had 2 large catering orders put in for my wedding and my credit card company thought one of the charges was fraud and was causing all kinds of issues. I was definitely stressing about it and Katina made sure both orders would be dropped off and continually followed up with me about the issue. She went above and beyond to calm me down. As someone who spent years in the service industry she did everything right and I can’t thank her enough.

I could only give one star because I didn’t actually get to eat the food. I placed a mobile order. It said it would be ready in 5 to 10 minutes. I arrived at the restaurant. It was very busy. I waited for 30 minutes on my food, but had to leave. My coworker continue to wait for the food, and was going to bring my food to me. She waited an hour and was told it was still going to be another hour before our meal was ready. Needless to say she left. The app should either provide better estimates of wait time or the restaurant should shut off mobile ordering when they are not able to keep up with demand.

Love me a broccoli cheese bread bowl! Stopped in before heading to the airport to eat lunch and get some work done. It is inside a building so less busy that other paneras I’ve been to on the past. Was a nice place to work for a few hours, and coffee refills didn’t hurt!
Rebecca Black

My daughter recently had oral surgery and can’t eat very many things. I stopped in to get her some Panera Mac & Cheese, and while chatting with the person getting our order together, I mentioned her situation. He then took her bowl back out and added more Mac and cheese so she would have plenty to eat. Little touches like that go a long way! She said her Mac n cheese was delicious, and his thoughtfulness made her day.

Staff was great but overworked. The restaurant was incredibly busy due to the Eras Tour in Indy but their management only decided to have 4 total staff during lunch time. Long wait and the poor staff was running around.

I used Nameless Catering to cater a company event for 100 people. We received many compliments on the food quality and taste. Their staff was very competent and kept everything stocked and tidy during our 3 hour event. There was A LOT of left over food. So, next time I will adjust my ordering a bit, but it is hard to complain that we never ran out of anything. I would definitely use them again.
Dena Marks

We hired Nameless to cater our company Christmas party, and from the beginning, they were extremely helpful. Jeremy addressed all of my questions, no matter how annoying they were. When the event arrived, the food was delivered on time, allowing us to set everything up nicely. The meal itself was amazing; everyone enjoyed it, and everyone left with full bellies. We would definitely choose Nameless again.

The Nameless Catering team is very caring, detail-oriented and courteous, and they work hard to go above and beyond our expectations. The food is consistently delicious and carefully set up by their experienced, friendly staff. I highly recommend Nameless Catering for your next event — you won’t be disappointed!
Holly Rice

They may be called Nameless Catering, but you’ll remember the name after they feed you. Usually when catering companies feed several hundred people over a week’s span, the food is bland, cold by the time you eat it (or the inverse – it’s dried out because of sitting over a sterno), not the food that we had from Nameless Catering though. The fact that they can deliver delicious foods at large quantities is impressive. Highly recommend. I legitimately found myself going back for seconds specifically targeted at the salad (and often other items too) because the dressings were so good. The cookies and brownies were addicting. Look them up if in the Indianapolis area. Thank you, from a member of the alumni corps.

First in person visit!
I have been able to enjoy the sweets for nearly 10 years. A vendor would bring them into work.
I have had the Danish, which I wanted today, but they were sold out. The cinnamon rasin bread is delicious.
Today, we selected a few sweets to taste. Oatmeal cookie, eclaire, lemon bar, and flourless chocolate cake.
As usual, everything was great!
I wish we lived closer so we could try
the sandwiches and other food items.

This place is a little gem. Line out the door on the Friday that I had lunch there. The service was great. The cashier was very kind- made sure to give me options for topings and add ons . I ordered Turkey Health sandwich and it came with choice of chip, salad or soup. I had chili and added cheese and sour cream on the side – it was fabulous. I ordered a lemonade, add raspberry syrup. I saw they have take and bake items, bulk deli items and a delicious dessert case everyone looked over after they ordered. Yummo. I paid between 15-20 for my lunch. Very fresh

Just had lunch at this fine establishment. Never had been here. There were three of us and our food ranged from a Turkey Club to a BLT and an avocado salad. The food can only be described as excellent. The service was fast and for the portions the price was reasonable. Everything is made in house and fresh. We were so impressed we will be stopping in for breakfast on our way out of Indianapolis. Great job everyone! You will not be disappointed. PS I had a local beer with lunch it was a light local beer that was cold, light and flavorful. See you tomorrow!!

Nice place with a very great staff, poor parking (out of their control). I got a few thing outside of a rainbow sugar cookie! The cookie was really good and the coffee was amazing. I got an ice coffee and the flavor was marvelous. The croissant I got was different, looked like a croissant but tasted like a flakey biscuit not as airy as the classic croissant. The fudge delight was probably my favorite bakery item I had… it was a coconut twist to a no bake cookie. They also had some frozen items that I will definitely be back for!!!

We recently had the pleasure of having Santorini Greek Kitchen cater our meeting, and it was an absolute hit! From start to finish, the experience was seamless and impressive. The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented, showcasing authentic Greek flavors with every dish.
The spread included a variety of options that pleased both meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Highlights included their juicy chicken and veggies, flavorful gyro meat, and a fresh, vibrant Greek salad. The tzatziki was a crowd favorite, with just the right amount of tang and creaminess. Everything was perfectly seasoned, and the ingredients tasted incredibly fresh. And don’t forget the baklava
The catering team was punctual for delivery and professional, setting up quickly and efficiently. They even provided all the necessary utensils, napkins, and condiments, which made the whole process worry-free. Additionally, the portions were generous, ensuring that everyone left satisfied. My only regret is we didn’t ask for TO GO boxes!
Overall, Santorini Greek Kitchen exceeded our expectations, and we’ll definitely be calling them again for future events. Highly recommended for anyone looking to bring authentic and flavorful Greek cuisine to their next gathering!

Calamari on point! Overall a fantastic experience. We sat down without wait (very surprising). Our server was excellent. portions were huge, every entree comes w salad, bread, green beans, potatoes. Only gripe is the beer list. Not much to choose from outside of Sun King. Entertainment by Dancing Greek lady . Awesome date night, we can’t wait to go back.

Food was delicious! Service was a little slow. Possibly understaffed for a Friday night. I can’t recommend either house drink. If ordering from the bar you stick to wine or beer.

Ordered the “to-go family pack combo” meal for 4 special ($50) they advertised via Facebook. They prefer people call in their orders – very responsive that way. I called in around noon for a dinner order that same day. We ordered the gyro entree which comes with a giant portion of Greek salad, green beans or potatoes, plenty of pita and a very generous portion of baklava. Their tsaziki sauce is amazing – we put it on everything. Pro tip, we think the baklava tastes better refrigerated. When we picked it up, everything was packaged really well and all came in a large box which was convenient for hauling back that much food. Excited to try the chicken souvlaki and the well renowned potatoes next time!

Service was fabulous, food is excellent and more than worth every penny. Place is very clean. My suggestion for the establishment would be to invest in better silverware and update restrooms. Will certainly return!

Menu Planning
A key service offered by catering companies is menu planning. This involves working closely with clients to develop a menu that considers dietary restrictions, guest preferences, and seasonal ingredients. Professional caterers bring expertise to the table, ensuring that each dish complements the overall event theme.
Buffet Setup and Service
Catering services often include buffet setup and service, allowing guests to serve themselves from a variety of dishes. This style is not only appealing and flexible but also promotes a casual atmosphere, where guests can mingle freely while enjoying their meals.
Food Stations
For a more interactive dining experience, many caterers provide food stations, where chefs prepare dishes on-site. Options might include a pasta station, taco bar, or carving station, giving guests the opportunity to customize their meals and enjoy freshly made dishes.
Beverage Catering

Frequently asked questions about catering services in Indianapolis
What types of events do catering services in Indianapolis typically handle?
Catering services in Indianapolis often handle a diverse array of events, including weddings, corporate functions, birthday parties, graduations, and fundraising events. Each type of event may require unique menu options and service settings, so it’s essential to choose a catering service that matches the specific needs of your event.
How can I choose the right catering service for my event?
Selecting the right catering service involves considering several factors. Start by defining your budget, preferred cuisine, and the size of your guest list. Research local catering companies, read reviews, and ask for referrals from friends or colleagues. It’s also helpful to schedule tastings with potential caterers to evaluate the quality of their food and service.
What is typically included in catering services?
Most catering services provide a comprehensive package that includes not just food, but also equipment rental, staffing, and sometimes decor. Common inclusions are tables, chairs, linens, and tableware. Be sure to ask about the details of what is included in the contract to avoid any surprises on the day of the event.
Are there options for dietary restrictions and allergies?
Many catering services in Indianapolis are willing to accommodate dietary restrictions and food allergies. When discussing your menu, be sure to inform the caterer of any specific needs your guests may have, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or nut-free options. A reputable catering service will work with you to create a menu that is inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
How far in advance should I book catering services?
It’s advisable to book catering services at least three to six months in advance, especially for popular dates like summer weddings or major holiday events. This advance planning allows for better availability of caterers, menu options, and allows for any necessary adjustments as the event date approaches.
What is the difference between buffet, plated, and family-style service?
Understanding the differences between service styles can help you choose what's best for your event. A buffet allows guests to serve themselves and can be cost-effective, while a plated service provides a more formal experience with dishes served at the table. Family-style service offers large bowls of food placed on the table for guests to share, combining elements of both buffet and plated services, creating a more communal atmosphere.
What is the typical staff-to-guest ratio for catering events?
The staff-to-guest ratio can vary depending on the type and scale of the event, but a common guideline is one server for every 20 to 30 guests for a buffet and one server for every 10 to 15 guests for a plated meal. This ratio helps ensure that guests receive timely service and that their needs are met throughout the event.
Can I customize my menu?
Most catering services are open to customizing menus based on your preferences and event themes. You can collaborate with the catering team to select items, adjust portion sizes, and create a unique dining experience that reflects your tastes. Make sure to communicate your vision clearly to achieve the desired outcome.
What should I do if my event runs late?
If your event is running late, it’s a good idea to inform your caterer as soon as possible. Many catering teams are accustomed to changes in timelines and can make adjustments accordingly, such as either delaying food service or keeping dishes warm until you are ready. Clear communication is essential to managing expectations and maintaining a smooth flow for the event.
What happens to leftover food after the event?
Most catering services will have a policy regarding leftover food. In many cases, you can arrange to keep any leftover food for your guests. However, health regulations may limit how leftover food can be handled or transported. Discuss the policy with your caterer in advance so that you are aware of the options available for your event.
