What a cool spot! We stopped by on Monday night for the open sign up night. It was cool to see the jam band environment. Drinks were groovy and the brownie ice cream was amazing . Make sure to book ahead as they have full performances most nights of the week!

Visiting The Jazz Kitchen was such a treat! Kat Edmonson was phenomenal (as was her guitarist!).

The food was excellent (highly recommend the crab cakes!), service was great, and ambiance was cool, too! Definitely a great spot to go if you’re looking for something different to do for a night out. There’s a nice covered patio area if you’re just coming for dinner, too! Parking can be a bit tricky in the area, but overall isn’t too hard to find.

I didn’t manage to get many pictures, I was so in the moment, but would 100% like to come back at some point!

I saw a fantastic jazz band performance here. They were top notch musicians and the music was beautiful. I ordered a vegetarian dish that was quite good and my wife was happy with her food. She wanted a cocktail and tried to order a “perfect gentleman”, but the waitress said there were no “perfect gentleman” available any more… She got something else and was happy with that. Morale of the story, you can’t always get a “perfect gentleman”, but you can find something that this is perfectly good. We sat in a corner booth not facing the stage of TV. We were in the room next to the room with the stage, We couldn’t see the stage. I liked it that way. There was only one tv showing the show to the room next to the stage room. So if a couple sat at some of the tables, one person’s back would be to the TV. Tip to the owners, mount 2 more TV’s., or not. I liked being tucked in a corner booth with my wife. The music was the foreground sonically, but visually we were the other’s cynosure. If there were 2 more TVs, it would remove the exact situation I preferred. It’s great how it is. You could buy tickets early and show up for the show early if you want to be up close to the band. We were 10 minutes late, and still very happy with our seating. She loved dessert too, ice cream and bread pudding. I fully recommend checking it out.

Great time with friends. The strawberry spinach salad was very, very good. The music excellent! The service could have been better. I really wanted dessert, but the waitstaff just brought my check without asking if any of us wanted anything else. Once I’m closed out by the person serving me, I will not continue to order.
I did mention to her she should ask if anyone wants dessert or anything before bringing the bill over. The carrot cake was calling my name, .
She got a nasty attitude stating she told the host what time she was closing the checks since there was another show after us. I was instantly confused asking what host? Her response the friend that
arrived first. This made zero sense, I did not order through the host I ordered with her. All good, it was definitely reflected in her service nonservice payment. One should always ask if anyone wants more before closing the tip.

Absolutely wonderful experience! Spent NYE here and it’s so perfect if you don’t want to go DT Indy and want a more intimate experience. Loved the special menu tonight, my favorite was the shrimp cocktail and chicken étouffée. Grace Kelly is an amazing performer and I look forward to spending the next NYE with Jazz Kitchen. Worth the price and amazing vibes! 100+ per person for NYE prices FYI 🙂

Bartender was cool, karaoke/sound guy and everyone else were absolute tools. Can I ask you a question? “Make it quick”…what time do I need to move this drink off the table? “Indeterminate amount of time”. I went into a mostly empty bar, and the coolest interaction was with a dog. A bunch of poseurs for sure, many dive bars to choose from, find a place that will treat you right.

Great venue to enjoy live Jazz on Tuesdays nights for FREE! That’s why I go. OVER 21 BAR. They also do live rock & roll bands on Saturdays, sometimes outside on the Patio if the weather permits. I’m not sure about other live band nights. Staff has always been friendly and attentive. They are open for lunch too. Very popular spot, and can get crowded at times. A bingo group meets there certain days. There’s pool tables and darts. Its always clean & tidy. Dog friendly, no kids!

The Dining Grandpa

Absolutely love this place, has a definite 1970s feel complete with music. Had me missing my bell bottom, jeans, long brown hair and ponytail. I was told they have live music, I think they said every day of the week. The joint has a really cool retro vibe. The Mousetrap is basically split in half, part pool hall in back. With the bar and music venue up front. The place must be really jumping, when the band is playing. I had a breaded Tenderloin and onion rings. My Tenderloin was as big as a ball cap, I think, larger and breaded and fried to absolute crunchy perfection. The onion rings were rather ordinary, but Lord knows the tenderloin didn’t care and neither did I. What great food and service. I will return to try something else, hopefully when the band is playing. That way, I can get the whole Mousetrap experience. If you’re looking for a laid-back atmosphere, complete with good food and a retro 1970s feel. Look no further you have arrived at your destination. Great great place.!

There should be 10 stars to rate Duke’s! It’s an amazing little honky tonk with SO much character! We just visited for the second time, and this is definitely one of our favorite places to see a show! It’s exactly what makes my soul happy, and if I didn’t know better, I would think Duke’s was plucked straight from old Nashville! The sound for the show is amazing, and you can get up close and personal with the musicians! The decor is so eclectic and cool. The bathrooms are super clean, huge, and nice! Love the sliding door!! The staff is friendly, welcoming, laid-back, and attentive. Last , but definitely not least: the food! My husband and I shared the Half Damn Thing, which is half a chicken, hot honey, fried biscuits, macaroni and cheese, a pickle slice, and fried Brussels sprouts. We are big eaters, and there was way more food than we could finish! I could write a page each on each of those food items!! I typically don’t eat chicken in the bone, but this was amazing!! We live about an hour from Dukes, and we would go there for the meal alone! Duke’s is a hidden gem, and I am so glad we discovered it!

This place was really great! My band played there this last week and the whole place was an absolute pleasure to be at. From their food to their staff, to even their patrons, everyone was extremely respectful and just created a wonderful atmosphere.

One, I was extremely surprised with how rowdy everyone got by the end of the night, that the bathrooms (all bathrooms) remained completely clean. This is unheard of in our area or pretty much any other bar I’ve played at, but not here.

There were neat lines headed to the bar to order either food or drinks ALL NIGHT LONG.

The food itself was also incredible and shockingly cheap for what you could get! Like most meals were under $10 which is unheard of in today’s day. And the few that were above $10, mine which was the Half Chicken for $25, I got 2 huge sides of mac and cheese, and brussel sprouts with the fixings. Then crispy as all could be chicken which had a wonderful flavoring, and the biscuits were AMAZING and homemade!

I’d 100% recommend stopping by if you’re in the area. Wonderful food, atmosphere, and live music. It’s a shame they’ll be closing shop by the end of this year. I wish they would’ve stuck around longer.

Stopped in for lunch with a friend. Fun little spot…. Cool honky tonk vibe , fun decor , lots of space , cool bar , and the food was great ! The bartender was super friendly, and all in all we had a great lunch. If you are vegan / vegetarian, they have an entire vegan menu ….. I had the Oretenderlin and thought it was very good. Definitely will go back to try more food …… And the beer selection was great too !!!

I went to Duke’s to see the two bands that were playing. I was surprised at the quality of the food and that there were tables and chairs. The downside was that it was very loud and people wouldn’t stop talking while the music was playing. But ultimately I had a good time and will return.

The chili cheese fries were the BEST I ever had! I ordered ‘half the damn thing’ for my entree (1/2 fried chicken, roasted brussels with pistachios and mac & cheese) and my choice did not disappoint! Large portions, enough for a second meal.

The staff were amazing, kind, and inviting. Overall, it wasn’t just dinner it was an experience.

DUKE’S is now in our dining rotation!!!

My first time here was great! I kept telling everyone all night about how great service we got there from Rachel and Kourtnie! Kourtnie made us great Vegas bombs and even told us some stuff about Vegas bombs that I never knew. Both ladies checked on us multiple times throughout the night. Rachel came to our back table a lot to make sure we were good and she was hilarious and fun! We loved the piano music playing too and got to have a chill girls night out!

I celebrated my 70th birthday was about 25 friends family coworkers and clients. The food was delicious, the musicians are excellent. This place seems popular with a wide variety of ages. We will definitely be back. We purchased everyone’s first drink, four appetizers, and four pizzas and our total was just under $200. That’s hard to beat.
Having their own parking lot on the south side of the building was a plus

Contract Drafting and Negotiation for Performances and Partnerships

Cearful contract drafting and negotiation practices are essential for jazz venues in Indianapolis. Civil attorneys can prepare performance agreements, venue leases, sponsorship deals, and vendor contracts that define terms for payment, cancellation, and contingencies. They help outline scope of services, royalties, and indemnification to protect the club and all parties involved.

    Intellectual Property, Licensing, and Branding

Management of intellectual property and licensing is critical for live music venues. Attorneys can navigate music licensing requirements with PROs, ensure proper handling of copyrights for performances, and address performance rights in multi-artist events. They also advise on trademarks and branding decisions to safeguard the club’s name and logo.

    Liability, Insurance, and Risk Management

Effective risk management relies on well-crafted measures such as liability waivers and indemnification provisions. Civil attorneys review insurance requirements (general liability, workers’ compensation, event insurance) and develop comprehensive risk assessment plans, including emergency planning and incident response protocols.

Employment Law and Club Workforce Compliance

Employment-related matters include employee contracts, wage and hour compliance, and adherence to non-discrimination and harassment policies. Attorneys help with workplace safety, onboarding protocols, and handling disputes to maintain a compliant and productive team.

    Dispute Resolution and Litigation Support

When conflicts arise, civil attorneys provide options for mediation and arbitration to resolve disputes efficiently. They also offer litigation support, including case strategy, evidence handling, and risk mitigation planning to protect the venue’s interests.

    Licensing, Permits, and Regulatory Compliance

Keeping a jazz club compliant involves obtaining and renewing liquor licenses and live entertainment permits. Attorneys guide in complying with noise ordinances, zoning regulations, and applicable health and safety standards to ensure lawful operation.

Real Estate, Leases, and Venue Transactions

For venue acquisitions or relocations, civil attorneys assist with lease negotiations, purchase agreements, and comprehensive due diligence. They review title issues, encumbrances, and other property rights matters to secure sound real estate decisions for the club.

Customer Relations and Contractual Disputes Resolution

In dealing with patrons and partners, attorneys address consumer disputes and potential breach of contract claims. They facilitate settlements or engage in alternative dispute resolution, while preserving relationships and protecting the club’s business interests.

Frequently asked questions about jazz clubs in Indianapolis

What defines a good jazz club in Indianapolis?

A good jazz club in Indianapolis typically blends high-quality live music with a comfortable, attentive atmosphere. Key elements include a well-tuned acoustic environment that supports improvisation without cluttering the mix, clear sightlines to the stage, and a reliable sound engineer who balances each instrument. The room should encourage active listening and allow space for the musicians to express nuance and dynamics. Finally, thoughtful staff service and consistent house policies help ensure a smooth, enjoyable evening for all guests.

Where are the best jazz venues located in the city?

Several notable jazz venues are clustered in walkable districts such as Downtown Indianapolis, Fountain Square, and surrounding neighborhoods with easy access to restaurants and parking. These areas often feature intimate rooms with a history of live jazz performances, unique architectural charm, and frequent artist residencies. When selecting a venue, consider crowd capacity, stage size, and proximity to options for dining or late-night drinks. Accessibility and nearby transit can also play a role for a relaxed evening out.

What kind of music can I expect at Indianapolis jazz clubs?

Indianapolis jazz clubs offer a broad spectrum of sounds, including traditional standards, bebop, swing, and contemporary explorations of modal and fusion styles. You may encounter vocal-led performances alongside instrumental ensembles, with improvisation that showcases individual artistry while maintaining the session’s groove. Sets often blend familiar tunes with fresh takes that reflect the musicians’ influences and the club’s artistic direction.

Are there genre-specific nights or live performances?

Yes, many clubs feature jam sessions, open mic nights, and resident bands who curate signature evenings. Some venues host special guest appearances or thematic nights focusing on particular eras or regional styles. Checking the venue’s calendar in advance can help you plan around weekly showcases or seasonal programs that align with your interests.

What about cover charges and drink minimums?

Cover charges vary by club, artist, and day of week, with some offering no-cover entry and others applying a modest door fee. Many venues employ drink minimums or require a minimum spend on beverages, especially for prime viewing spaces. It’s helpful to review the club’s pricing on their website or call ahead to confirm any pricing policies before you go.

Can I dine before or after a show?

Dining options are often available nearby, and several clubs pair with local restaurants to offer pre-show meals or dining packages. Reservations help guarantee a convenient sequence of events, particularly for popular performances. If you plan to eat, arrive early enough to enjoy your meal and still catch the beginning of the opening set.

Do jazz clubs in Indianapolis have age restrictions?

Age policies vary by venue. Some clubs are 21+ after certain hours or on busier nights, while others welcome 18+ patrons for earlier performances. Always verify the club’s ID requirements and any age-specific restrictions before purchasing tickets or arriving at the door.

How do I know who is performing tonight?

Current tonight’s lineup is usually posted on the club’s official website, social media pages, and email newsletters. You can also find curated calendars and lineups on venue pages, sometimes with short bios or audio samples. If you’re unsure, calling the door staff a little before showtime can provide an up-to-date performance schedule.

Is tipping etiquette the same as elsewhere?

In musical venues, it’s customary to leave a tip for musicians after a set or when a tip jar is presented. Typical guidance ranges around 15-20% of your bill or the offered tab amount, with gratuities guided by tips for exceptional performance. If you’re seated at a table with service, consider a standard gratuity for table service in addition to any tip for the musicians.

What safety measures should I expect at jazz clubs?

Modern jazz clubs emphasize crowd safety and a welcoming environment. Expect clearly marked emergency exits, visible staff, and adherence to capacity guidelines for comfort and safety. Clubs often maintain clean facilities, monitor noise levels, and train crew to handle security procedures so guests can focus on the performance.
